Good show! And, BTW, I didn't presume you had scuffed up the alloy. I dunno how rare these tools are. Hopefully you can obtain you own set. The only alternative I can think of is wrapping the parts in leather and using a money wrench. You would need two people. That being said, I've had to use a fair amount of power to lock as well as keep good tension on the bearing cups. There was a cheaper version of these parts, and they may use the same tools. I used to know the model numbers of both headsets ... so you should be able to recover those to help you.

I see that I wrote too soon. You [BradL] and Chombi have both contributed to the VeloBase archive in regards to the Mavic '300' headset family. (Mine is a 312). And so I found out that the two tools will fit on the 302, 310 and 312 — the latter two differing in thread standards. And BTW, I am shamed by the beauty you are creating. My 979 is built from a collection of mixed components (Suntour Cyclone, Campagnolo, Shimano, Nitto, MKS) ... and as much as I've polished, it is not nearly as beautiful as yours. Huge kudos — lovely work, beautiful machine.

Wonderful build thread. It could be one chapter of a coffee table collection of your builds. I’m headed down to the garage to apologize to each of my bikes.

edit: This thread made me feel guilty about the chain I left on one of my bikes and then I noticed you didn’t mention your choice of chain.

I don't do: disks, tubeless, e-shifting, or bead head nymphs. But I do hate all e-bikes.

Thanks! And yes, I forgot to post about the chain. I used an NOS Sachs-Sedis chain.

What do you have?

Here are the ones I restored for others:
A 1983 Colnago Super Profil with full Campy 50th Anniversary group.





A 1986 Vitus 979 KAS replica





And a 1980 Colnago Super. We left all the paint chips but mitigated the rust, and polished everything.





And one of where the Colnago started for comparison.

I'd not ridden my 979 for a few weeks, but instead a couple of others in my 'rotation'. The latter can't considered to be doorstops either, but getting on the Vitus ... within half a kilometer the ride is so ... it feels so different. 3-4 kilometers further down the road and I'm saying to myself ... damn this is fine!! I've read other owners who raved about how these frames ride.

I've put an old Shimano 5 speed freewheel on the GP4 - Campagnolo Record wheel, and its geared to spin on the flats.

@BradL ... how do you think about the way yours feels to ride? By my understanding, that the actual size of the 979, as well as the weight of the rider may affect the ride on the frames. The angles vary to the frame size. And accordingly, I suspect the tubes behave variously.

I have the Vitus charts for all the tube sizes and angles for the various assemblies.

What size is yours?
Mine is 56CT x 53.5 cc with a 134mm head-tube
