Thanks juvela! I am the aforementioned Dad who bought the bike as a project to work on with my son. I read on Sheldon Brown's site that the French made bars and stems have a reputation for breaking so I will be changing those out soon. I have passed the info on to my son to lower that stem into the head tube more. Thanks again!

Thanks @juvela I forgot to mention that point....

Mogaz74, Stems need to be inserted at least 75mm-80mm (~3") into the fork steerer for safety sake. When that far extended the stem or the threaded part of fork steerer can break off.

7 years since my last post, how time flies.

Oh yes. That was my bike. Orange (though yours looks like it has more red in it on my monitor) with white pin-striping on the lugs. Had the seat tube decal but not the downtube decal yours has. Same globe St Etienne headbadge as the red bike upthread. (Unlike the mod type handling on the seat- and down tubes on the root beer colored bike above--nice!)

Good working bike of its time, and a better bike today, IMO. I like lugs. Mine was bought new for Christmas 1973, maybe 74, in Sacramento.
