What a cool looking bike!!! I seriously like the lines on it. It's very different. Is it a really tall bike? What's the size?

Yeah, it's definitely a little on the large side, good thing I'm 6'1" hehe. It fits me pretty well. It also has the longest stem I've ever seen on a bike! I had another GT a while back, but wasn't exactly what I was interested in. It was a bright lime metallic green. This one I like, even in solid incognito black.,,,,BD

Can you describe the ribs a bit more? Vertical or horizontal?

Heres a Yokota I found in the garbage, the shocks where destroyed, no wheels, and small problems, and white paint not to good, I fixed it up, it's a nice rider, aside from when the chain snapped and I went for a not so fun ride. lol sorry for bad pic, if you want better, ask.

Actually I have seen exactly one bike like it before, and I can't find the pic. It was a GT paint scheme for a while. They had MANY on this same frame style over the years. What they did was paint a base color, black in this case. Then they took a contresting color and drizzled paint all over the frame. This drizzled paint is what showed up as "ribs" under the black spray paint, and can be seen where I scraped the top tube. The whole frame is like that, with raised lines showing through.,,,,BD
Here it is! Page 22. I love it!! Maybe he can do some clear close ups for some decal art?

A 1997, but I'm pretty sure this was at the end of this bikes retail lifespan.
I've had this bike in pieces for the past 9 years I think. I rode the hell out of it for two years, then upgraded to a Gary Fisher with suspension in 1999. This happened to be sitting around, and the unfortunate victim for my first adventure into bicycle mechanics.
So here's what I've got together so far. I had to get the bar and brake levers, but everything else was in the parts stash...some of which was originally on the bike to begin with. The front derailleur isn't hooked up yet. Rasta colored bar wrap will finish it off and probably really clash with the rest of it. Whatever...it's fun
-1997 Trek 830 Mountain Track frame (steel, 18")
-On One Midge bar
-Tektro RL520 brakes
-LX rear derailleur, unknown front
-Sram 8-speed casette
-Mavic rims/Shimano hubs
-Suntour friction barcon shifters
-no name adjustable stem. this thing is a POS and needs to go.

^That bike is pretty awesome.
I have a question regarding MTB sizing. I have also been a road bike guy, but recently have been looking into buying a vintage MTB. What would be a decent MTB size range for me. I ride 57-59 road bikes and am 6'1"

I think yours is even better (and older), as it has the more desirable "bi-plane" fork instead of the unicrown. I need to start cruising Devon on trash days!
P.S. Your bear-trap pedals have great value as well...

Trek 800 Sport or Ross Mt St Helens
Anyone know anything about Ross mountain bikes?
There is a Ross Mt. St. Helens (1993 or 1994)available to me as well as a Trek 800 Sport (1997 according to bikepedia) for the same price.
I know the Ross has a Sugino Triple Crank and the Trek 800 is some shimano. The 800 was lower end right? What tubing did this St. Helens have (1993 was CrMo & 1994 was Aluminum)? Whichever bike I buy will just be for commuting and around town.
Sorry for the terrible quality (especially the pics of the complete bikes), but these were the best he could send me. I thought I'd add the crank pics just to show the state each of the bikes are in a little better.

Here is my 1991 Haro Impulse. I love this bike, my sister was the original owner. I have always enjoyed it and when she gave it to me a few years ago it was a great day. I have recently upgraded a few items (shocks, handlebars, stem, and a odometer) but it's original otherwise!

I just overhauled my Bridgestone MB-3 and took it out for a spin this afternoon/evening. I still love this bike! I bought this from a friend at least 12 or 13 years ago. Does anyone know what year(s) the MB-3 was offered in silver w/ blue lettering, lugged frame... I'll post pics if I get a moment tomorrow after work.

Sorry no pics but I have several vintage MTB's (or, more appropriately - ATB's)
1987 Wicked Fat Chance - Salvation Army $40 - A great day that was!
1985 Peugeot Canyon Express - another thrift store find and probably the nicest riding bike I own
1988 Giant Boulder - Given to me by the bike shop owner I worked for back in 1997 or so - completely stock but repainted by me. Shimano Mountain LX all around.
1984/85-ish Diamond Back Apex with the deer head Shimano stuff - I believe XT stood for eXtra Tough back in those heady days....
Bikes I've had and wish I didn't sell/give away
1993 Nishiki Alien with the aluminum frame, square top and down tubes, elevated chainstays
1992 Nishiki Ariel e-stay
1990 Nishiki Pinnacle steel e-stay from a dumpster (this was an Alien frameset outfitted with Suntour XC pro stuff, back when the manufacturers offered an option). It had a sweet Tange Switchblade fork on this one, converted to threadless with a Rockshox SID steer tube. I really miss this bike.
1992 Bridgestone MB-4 I gave to my brother as a commuter when he was in college
1995 Kona Kilauea bought as a leftover in 1996. That was a great frame, and I transferred all the components directly over to the Fat Chance, making the Fat a really great ride.
I'm probably forgetting some....
I absolutely love the old early mountain bikes.

wow. good find!
My favorite bike ever is my first 'real' bike, a 1991 Yo Eddy. It's been through a lot but now it is in pieces in my kitchen until I get a new rear wheel. The 1992 vintage Ringle hub finally fell apart. The SuperBubba front is still doing fine though.... Ah, and I am also looking for a Tange Switchblade or old Bontrager fork until I can afford to splurge on a Big One Inch knock off......

kleins seem to be alittle outnumbered so lets see if I can add one more. One of the ones with the hidden rear break.

No competition with some of these, but here's the lowly Ross Mt St Helens I just picked up, with late 80s/early 90s seizure inducing stem & bar combo.
No drive side shot just yet. This was a quick pic I took with an iphone.

I was so happy to see this thread. I have a mountain bike that was given to me about 12 years ago, and have no clue what brand it is - never heard of "Python."
Anyway, here are some pics. Any info from the vintage experts will be greatly appreciated. Also, I was thinking about adding some forks with shocks - can that be done with this bike? THANKS!

Don't be that way. That is a nice bike. After all the discussion about it over the last day or so, we sort of feel like its godparents, so have the courtesy of complimenting it around us.
And if you don't like it, send it to me please!
