Another pic of the Univega, now that I've cleaned it up a bit. The swept-back bar is far more comfy than the flat bar it came with, and I'm starting to like the Gripshift setup.

I hope this fits in the retro sense. Thanks to this thread, I was able to ID the frame!
It was a Miyata Shredder, unsure of the year. 1 1/4 head tube, TIGed, splined triple butted steel. Parts are now on a newer non-vintage, steel hardtail. I plan to bring the shredder back into service when I obtain a 60mm suspension fork.

Maybe I can help you identify the year of that Miyata or at least get close. I picked up this Miyata Shredder at a church yard sale. After cleaning, lubing and taking it on a ride, I decided to flip it. Based on the Shimano date codes on the derailers, I decided this is a 1990.
I noticed you've got a FOX fork on that Miyata, geez you're really serious about making that back into an MTB. The 1 1/4" head discouraged me from trying anything exotic.

Cool thanks! Yours was the one that tipped me off as to the name, as I couldn't find it in the catalogs. Now I see its the alternate color for the green one. Mine came with a rusty old 60mm low end rockshox with an 1 1/4 threaded steerer, which I figured was stock, but apparently was an upgrade. I saved it from going to the dump. I'll post some pics when its running again.

96 gt karakoram ive had since new, since i was 12. winter rebuild with an 01 manitou sxr i got for free, v brake in front, new bar,headet,stem, grips, seat, chain cassette and chainrings. almost there. deore lx with rapidfire, butted tange frame.

The RD is a Precision Billet Proshift - it looks alot like the Paul doesn't it? Was made in Chico California, maybe it was Paul's neighbor huh? It shifts very nicely. I've heard they are delicate but I've had it on for 5 years now and haven't had any problems. I wish I could find a matching FD to go with it.
The crank is a square taper Race Face Next LP. Nothing special about the BB just a run of the mill Shimano.
One of these days I am going to replace the fork with a steel one made by Chris Ingleheart. The Spicer is too flexy. It looks cool though.
The brakes are Paul Love Levers and Motolite Calipers. Here a picture of the calipers:

If and when the guy who threw that Pott's away, finds out what it's worth, he'll have a friggin heart attack.
On that Proshift RD: I have a take-off NOS one that has the frame mount bolt stripped a bit at the threads. Anybody know if another RD has the same mount bolt specs (or know where to find a new one)?

Gah. Had my old Stumpjumper out on the trails today. Caught a tiny twig in the rear derailleur and it pulled it into the spokes. Hard. I limped it home with a couple of gears, but I have not had the heart to even look at it since. I fear the wheel and the derailleur are gone. I hope I did not bend the frame.

When I got this off of CL, the previous owner had Altus shifters with V-brake levers installed and they didn't pull the LX canti's too well. I found a set that matched the rest of the LX drivetrain and now it's back to original. Under 26 lbs.

Tha frame has more heritage and class than probably 90% of the other rigs on this forum. You are one lucky lucky soul.
The closest I ever came was a 1987 Wicked Fat Chance from the Salvation Army for $40. Regrettably, I got stupid and sold it a few years ago. Wish I still had that frame - in spite of the hammered pressed-in BB bearings.
