Ok, trimble inverse 4 finished for now, few changes to happen yet but its built and rideable now
Certainly noticeable, bit of a mix of old and not so old but I really wanted to be able to ride this with comfort and reliability.
also upgraded the black kestrel - tange switchblades hung up and now its fitted with some RS-1 forks

Tried to post this two other places with zero response so maybe this is the right place.
Fleamarkt season is on here in Norway and todays catch is this, an 89-90 Merida Aluminum MTB. It was decked out out with fenders, kickstand, lights and a dynamo but I wanted to see how it performed as intended so I "cleaned " it up, put on some weird VP pedals and my old Brooks and took it for spin. Had no idea bonded aluminium could feel so harsh! Biopace HP was much better thanfirst generation BP and the bike was nice on fireroads. Paid 50 $ so no real catch perhaps but the wheelset alone is worth it to me. Early XT is pretty nice stuff !

This is the only bike(in my possession) that I've owned since new. I bought it in 1994. It is a Mongoose Amplifier(re-labeled AMP Research B2 or B3). Except for tires and brake pads, this how I had it built up originally. Might be a stretch for vintage, but it is pushing twenty years almost.

Easter morning ride on one of my current projects. late 70's BMX cruiser converted to MTB back in the day:
In 1979 if you couldn't afford or find one of those new fangled MTB's but wanted something more than a pre war Schwinn, you did this. Champion double down tube Cruiser converted to MTB BITD.

Grabbed this 1994 (1995?) Diamondback Apex today off CL for cheap.. components are ok, nothing too exciting (Deore LX) but the frame is True Temper TT Lite, which is rebranded custom butted True Temper OXII! First time i've owned a bike with suspension (Judy RockShox).. I don't know how to tell if the fork is blown out though.. it's squishy when i lift the front end and i think i would like it firmer (or totally rigid!) Bike looks like it's gotten heavy use, drivetrain is worn out -- gears were slipping all over the place on the test ride, even lose the chain off the big ring.. in my head I'm like, well this will make it easier to get the seller to come down on their price! 
It weighs 25.8 lbs "as found"... which is slightly lighter than the carbon and aluminum composite frame i picked up earlier this week for a lot more $. The tires on this bike are smaller and probably lighter, but still, you'd think crabon would be significantly lighter

In those ten years, the frame has gotten lighter and is now True Temper instead of Tange, and shimano has introduced indexing and hyperglide shifting, but the Apex is no longer speced with top of the line components and runs Deore LX instead of Deore XT
For a few years in the mid 90s, Diamondback speced the Apex with the same frame as the steel Axis but the component level was much lower.. in 1996 they kept the high end frame but dropped down the components to STX level, and in 97 i think the Apex no longer came with the TT Lite but was back down to the more common True Temper AVR.

Found a 1994 Diamondback Response Elite on CL for $50, I just spent another $50 and about 16 hours of work making it a rider. Like this one^^^^.
It's a fast bike, it weighs about 25 with the oil suspension fork, which soaked up a rough railroad track crossing like a champ today. It's double butted True Temper chromoly steel. I painted the fork a matching color to the frame, (Duplicolor car paint).
I'm really liking this one as a rider!

You can make your bike lighter by probaby equiping it with some older crossmax tubless wheels, xty 10 speed group and a carbon fork

My trek is a composite frame made with aluminum and carbon, and the carbon is just round tubes, shaped just like your typical steel tubes. Full carbon frames can be designed in custom shapes to have stiffness in some directions and flex in others. the Aluminum stays probably contribute a fair amount to how much of the road feel is transferred to one's butt
I haven't ridden this bike a ton so it's hard to give it a complete review, but it definitely feels different from steel and doesn't seem to soak up the bumps quite the same way. I will have to wait and see how it rides once i get the fit dialed in and set up the cockpit. Strangely, even though the distance from the saddle to the bars is longer than on some of my other bikes, it feels too small still.
I'd really like to get this thing down around 24 lbs or less.. I was surprised when it came in at 26lbs. No sense giving up the ride of steel if it's not significantly lighter imo...

I do have to admit the fact that the steel diamondback I just picked up is slighter lighter than the carbon/alu trek does kind of annoy me... I'm hoping the frame has some advantage over a similarly weighted steel frame.. besides looking really cool that is

I'm looking at picking up this bike (mostly for components / wheels for another build) but would probably 're build' it for my dad as just a mess around / do anything bike.

hard to tell but it looks like it might be a Deerhead FD on there? Early mtb with a nice lugged frame.. probably the lightest you would see around this time is something like Tange MTB double butted tubes but it may be even heavier
if the price is right i'd grab it, if anything for the parts like you say, but the paint looks nice and the geometry would lend itself to a nice utility bike/hauler

I just took the Trek 8300 out for another test ride and I have to say that it rides like a champ.. I didn't really notice any significant transfer of road feel, or at least not anything that was unacceptable. It does feel stiff, but it also has a "bouncy" feel. The main things that came to mind are "light, agile and precise". I just need to get some road slicks on there to really tell how fast it is.
I was feeling a bit of buyers remorse especially after picking up the similarly weighted steel Diamondback for so much less money, but I'm feeling a lot more pleased
