I just had an experience that I had to share. I know a few vintage BMX guys, and as you are probably aware it is a TOTALLY different world, in many ways, compared to ours. I joined in on a conversation on our online group where one of the members was showing pics of 2 Diamondback Mean Streaks he had just acquired. He was poking fun at them a little bit, so I mentioned I'd be interested in them as I'd love to get my hands on a fully lugged vintage mtb. He informed me I was a day late, he had just taking them to the metal recyclers. I threw up a little in my mouth. They're probably not grail-worthy to most, but I think they're great.

Here's my brand new to me 1996 Mongoose IBOC Zero-G SX. It's a mix of Deore LX/XT/XTR components. The original Rock Shox Judy XC fork doesn't really work though. I'll be replacing the fork once I get the $115 for a new one, because I don't feel like dealing with used suspension forks.

It supposedly went for $1100+ originally. The guy I bought it from bought it brand new to ride around the neighborhood with his daughter.

Just realized I haven't updated the Chrome Jamis yet. It has received a slightly newer Shimano crank with the same Biopace rings. I also dropped a new BB in it, but it turned out to be longer than the original. I will change that soon enough, but it does function properly. It also got a set of Shimano block SPD's. To put the icing on it, it received the suede Supercorsa repop I got from a member here.,,,,BD

Another updated picture in the morning.

Well, it's still morning. Sorry got a slow start this morning, and about to go cook 5 racks of pork ribs in about a half hour. The Continentals were too fat, and I ordered these slightly smaller tires before I put them on. The Conti's actually rubbed the fork, but were fine for clearance in the stays. I would have thought it'd be the other way around.,,,,BD

That's what I call showing his own " mean Streak " ! Wonder why it didn't occurs to him to sell for money to buy BMX stuff ?

Wow, beautiful scenery and bike.

I took my Raleigh out to a real mountain bike trail for the first time since I've had it today. After only doing the intermediate trail, I can't even imagine how awful it was doing EXTREME mountain biking back in the 80's with only rigid bikes like this.

I just picked up a 1992 Trek 950. I currently have the bike set up as a trail/gravel bike. The paint is in almost perfect shape with a few scratches on the right seat stay. The bike rides great. I took it out for the first time yesterday; the bike rides beautifully.

1993 Trek 930, 20in. Upgraded to mostly xt back in the day it seems as normally would have had lower shimano. Just replaced all brake pads, swapped road tires for gravel, adjusted/tuned, serviced headset, swapped seat post and saddle, added some old bar ends. Very nice for my mellow mtb needs. Accelerates very fast but of course rigid will jackhammer you if too crazy on rough trails.

Love the bike and I love the way we both took pics of our Trek 900 series bikes against brick walls. Plus we both went with leather saddles. My bike was deore lx stock but I swapped out the crank and the OP swapped out the cantis for v brakes.

Thanks, they both look nice. As you probably know right at the end of the lugged era. Oversized tubing not quite as sexy (imo) as older lugged but seeing as how I have never seen one in my area I bought it even at high end of retail price. Also have that 92 frameset, maybe I can build it up one day if a decent donor is found.

Nice looking ride. What tires did you end up putting on her?

Thanks! The tires are Performance Bike Forte Pisgah 2.1. They have a very Schwalbe type tread, which works for me.,,,,BD

That Acera RD has GOT to go though. It shifts okay, it's just too modern for the era the frame was made. I also plan to redo all the cables. I found a source for clear housing like the front shifter, so I will probably go that direction.

My '92 950 is my favorite ride, I truly think Trek reached it's zenith in rigid mtb bikes with the years they produced these lugged models. I use mine for long distance street riding, light single track trails and around the city rides.

I've changed it up a bit from the attached pic - it currently runs as a 7spd, has Sugino cranks, svelte pedals, a Selle saddle with titanium rails, and street tires..

I agree. My first job was in a Trek dealer and I lusted after the 1992 970. I still wish I could find one that fit.

Yeah I'd love to run into a 970 or 990 from this era. One thing I really love about these lugged models is you can really see the work that went into the design and execution of them. Whereas I think a lot of companies back then simply had Giant crank out generic models for them - most being exactly the same except for paint and graphics, Trek really put their heart into their bikes. My 950 rides like a road bike in many ways imo - very fast climber and comfortable ride, with zero bottom bracket flex and great delivery of the rider's power.

I'm loving the '92 Trek 950 I picked up a few weeks ago. It is fast becoming one of my favorite bikes. It's a rock solid bike that handles really well.

For some reason I can only see the one picture, but that year vintage was awesome for Mongoose MTB's. '95-'97 have some of the best frames, geometry, and part spec's that any bike of the era had. Just swap the fork and go, you'll love it.

VERY nice find. I have several vintage mountain bikes now, but my favorites are chrome. I'm adding another to the stable soon!,,,,BD

I'd love to find an Ascent EX someday!
