Wanted: Miele History/Info
From what I know this is a Canadian Bike manufacturer. I don't know where or how or with what the frames are built. I recently biked up a used on with shimano light action components. I believe it is meant to be a 7-speed (indexed). The rear wheel spacing is 128mm but i believe the wheels are not original. They are steel 27s. I was told by my LBS that the shimano no-model-name brakes are usually coupled with 700c wheels and this makes sense to me since the pads have to be adjusted all the way to the top of the vertical slot (is there a name for that?). What is left of the model sticker is RIVO... maybe RIVOL... or RIVON... I don't know. It is butted steel with SR stem and champion bar... sugino cranks. Any help wpuld be appreciated.

Miele was a Canadian brand with a wide range of models from city bicycles to high end racing machines. The closest match that I can make to your description is a BINOVA. Shimano Light Action components would be correct and place it circa 1987-1988. Given the period and assuming the model, the wheels would have consisted of 700C Ambrosio rims laced to Suzue hubs.

Here in Toronto, there are tons of Mieles around and they are quite good bikes. I owned one and it was very light and responsive, so much so that I converted it to a SS and gave it to a friend who loves it. I don't know much about the history of the company but when I was a kid and my friend bought a brand new Miele in 1988, we were all in awe.

Don't know if it is the same company, but in Germany you can buy just about anything with a Miele brand name on it. Lots of household appliances. In Italian miele means honey, I believe.

Thanks for the info. BINOVA makes sense, too bad I pealed off what litte remained of the sticker prematurely. I started stripping the paint last night and I plan on painting it silver and yellow. T-Mar, where did you get this information? Can you direct me? Does anyone know about dating bikes based on serial/model numbers?

Miele is currently one of the brands manufactured by ProCycles in Saint-Georges (Québec, Canada). However, I believe that at some point it was a brand of its own and that the bikes were manufactured along the 401 in Ontario (Canada). Probably one of those cases where the original owner was old and he sold the company...
As far as I know, there never was any relation between the bicycle company and the German appliance manufacturer. Whether the original plant owner was Mr. Miele or someone who bought the rights to use the name, I have no idea.

procycle assumed the cdn rights to many other manufacters. whether they bought the rights from an european co. or assimilated a whole co. i don't know. i cannot imagine that the vacuum cleaner co is the same as the bike guys. those old 80's road bikes would make decent city commuters then and now.

The Miele brand was originally manufactured by Guvin Co, Ltd. of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The brand is named after the founder, Jim Miele, who emigrated to Canada from Italy, as a teenager. The company fell on hard times in the early 1990s and the company folded. The brand name was sold to Procycle in 2002, a year before Jim passed away. There is no connection to the German company.
You should be able to date the Miele within model year using the component date codes. These codes usually are the same as, or one year older than the model number. An excellent source for locating and decyphering the date codes is https://www.vintage-trek.com/component_dates.htm .
If you want some decals for your repainted Miele, I still have a small supply of original decals. I don't think I have the model name decal, but I can supply just about everything else.
By the way, some of the original colour schemes for the Binova were red to white fade, lilac to white fade and violet to white fade. If one of these turns your cranks (pun intended) you may want to keep closer to the original.

The completely unrelated German company, that now makes household appliances, did make bikes! You can find them throughout Germany. They were actually quite a high quality brand at that. I do not believe they made any lightweights, but their city bikes are still used on a daily basis even if I believe no new bikes have been built since the 50's.

The LS version of the Uno came out in 1988. I still have some of the correct head tube, top tube and top tube decals, but no longer have the correct down tube, chainstay or model name decals.

Miele bicycles, built when Mr. Miele owned the name, were pretty nice bicycles, from the entry level offerings to the top bow-wows in the kennel. The best of them were built in Italy, the balance elsewhere.
