ebay and/or craigslist finds part II

I've been stalking this Classic Battaglin on eBay for the last couple of days. Totally gorgeous. It's coming from Canada, so shipping is going to be almost prohibitive (let alone the guy isn't thrilled about having to pack it up and ship it). I've been all over the Internet trying to figure out what it's worth so I know whether I should even bother watching it, but no luck. If it's topping a thousand bucks, I might as well hang it up now.
Anybody have any ideas?

Nice looking Italian steel with ***SHUDDER*** Dura-Ace . I can't see this going for near $1000. Nice tubing but I feel the components are not very intriguing.

Welllll, since I was seriously high-balling when I said a grand, do you think you could narrow down the spread? Yeah, i wasn't thrilled with some of the components either. Battaglin's originally had Campy componets I think. I think a bike this sweet would be worth some component upgrades, no?There's only one bid on it (even though it's really too early to tell what'll happen in four days). But, could it be obscure enough to be overlooked (fingers crossed)??? Then, I also wanna convert it with a flip-flop hub.
Also, is Columbus synonymous with CroMo?

Funny thing - when my daughter's Battaglin Giro was fished out of a local thrift shop, it was sporting a Shimano indexed 6 speed drive train. Nice frame, and a great little ride - after I stripped off the Japanese stuff and rebuilt it with Campy.
As far as the bike the OP's watching in the auction, anything is possible - but I'd guess somewhere between $300-$500, and I'd bet on the low side because of owner's shipping restrictions and the pedestrian components. As far as being obscure enough to be overlooked, you pretty much killed that when you created this thread. We may all be "friends" here, but there are lots of eyes looking, and you greatly expanded the field.
Personally, I'm with GG on this. I'd only be interested in it as a nice buildable frameset, as the components are not a pleasing match to the bike.
I'd value that frame set at about $300, so snagging it at any price in that neighborhood would be my target - but the shipping charges would be a show-stopper.

Thanks. That's helpful. And hopefully on the mark. I'll keep on watching and see what unfolds.

I recently sold a bunch of older Dura-Ace stuff on eBay and got some money back. Plan on maybe 100-150 back for some of those DA components.

My best find along those lines was a '71 Raleigh Super Course: the seller misspelled "Raleigh" and didn't list any components so nothing really would turn up on just about all searches. I didn't get it for free--it went for $81, I believe.

Frame + Fork: With paint in fair shape and no troubles I'd say it would sell for $285 pretty safely.
Wheels/tires: The wheels are nothing special but with the tires, I'd say they're worth $100.
Shifters (Sora 8spd): Sell for around $90.
H'bar + stem: Worth more but sell for around $35 in clean shape on Ebay.
Seatpost+seat: There's some money here. Syncos titanium $120 (or better) in goodshape. Spec'd Toupe sells for $80 all the time.
Dura Ace stuff:
H'set: $60
Crank: $145 in clean shape
FD: $25
RD: $35
Cassette: $40
Shifters: $15-20
Brake Levers: $55
BB: $15
The rest of the stuff is a giveaway gimme, including the brakes, which are worth more as pads alone.
So the build would cost around $1100 to create piecemeal. Given how everyone in this country feels entitled to a nepotist deal, I'd say it'll hammer at around $420. Then again, the guy made the '0.99 cent' mistake (You can start a Colnago Mexico in that shape at 0.99, but never a limited lust factor marque like Battaglin), so it could actually sell for $225-250, as though it were a Master Ironman.
That's what I say.

Most people will take a "pickup only" auction at face value -- they won't even watch it. If you see something you like, it's always worth a shot to ask the seller if they'd ship, or at last resort, drop the bike off at a bike shop for packaging and shipping. I've done that, and while the shipping isn't cheap, the auction is generally cheaper than if it were a normal one with shipping to anywhere. This works better later on in the auction, if/when the seller realizes that there isn't much interest, and may be motivated to reconsider the "local only" choice.
The seller is just limiting the potential pool of bidders by doing this. In most cases, might as well just list on CraigsList for weeks at a time until someone bites at the price the seller has in mind.

Add Canada to that mix, with the good possibility of an added 'duty' charge and 'international' ship rates, and what would the most well-intentioned of us American's risk on this gamblers delight?
I'd say that the seller is running an auction with only 5-10% of the people interested actually ready to take any chance.
And that,(to the guy that isn't Chas), is why I wrote of the damaged appraisal. Sometimes you get through the minefield, but most of the time the minefield can make a bike won at $150 end up costing around $500 delivered and chewed mercilessly to boot.
I'd love to see other ideas and estimates of this auction. I think people will learn plenty from this particular offering.
