better pics, found them for free on York Craiglist, will be donating the girls bikes, plus a girls Murray mtb. It's in the back of the Bronco and it's to cold to mess with right now.

A little something I found last weekend for $40. This is what appears to be a late 80's Bianchi mixte, in size 19"/48cm. It was in a bit of disrepair - the bike was complete and sported a nice Shimano SIS 6 speed group, but needed a thorough cleaning as well as headset/bb adjustments. Also, it needed tape, some cables, brake pads, and housings.

The big surprise was the rear freewheel - after futzing with the adjustment and not being able to get the rear shifting properly, I pulled the wheel and discovered that the freewheel was a generic Suntour - D'oh!! I spun on a spare Shimano SIS 6 speed from the parts bin, and now it is complete and already listed on CL.

I'll be surprised if you still have it by tomorrow evening .

I'm about to go pick my ebay Bianchi catch. A member from Dallas gave me the heads up on it, and it ended at $79.99. I can't tell which model from the single auction pic, but it has a Brooks saddle, and is black with gold graphics. It may be too small, at which point I'll sell the frame. A real shame, but I will probably get some nice components and the saddle out of the deal at least. Pics later.,,,,BD

From your lips to God's ears.

We're getting absolutely hammered here with a terrific storm - there were wind gusts of 100+ mph reported on top of Diablo today. It is the 1st of 3 predicted to hit the area this weekend, so I'll be surprised if many folks brave the weather and go bike shopping.

You never can tell, though - there might be a break here and there, and I could use the cash. You do NOT want to know what an alternator costs for a "vintage" 911.

Actually, I was just thinking about the storm down there. I was wondering how my mother was doing...I'll give her a call tomorrow to check up on her. We had some stiff winds here this morning--nothing like what you guys are getting, though.

Just got back. It's a Sport SS. The components are golden arrow friction, not bad. The levers are Shimano 600 aero, calipers are Dia Compe. No number on them, but look a bit like G's and 400's, or a cross between the two. The best part of the deal? A VERY nice condition Brooks B-15! It's going straight onto the Sprite I got on New Years eve. Chrome rails are spotless, as is the adjusting hardware. Started out black, but is now a gorgeous broken in antique brownish color. It made the 60 mile round trip worth it. I don't think the seat goes with the bike, since the post will not go into the
frame. The clamp isn't crushed down, so I guess the original post went away sometime in the past.,,,,BD

Pics tomorrow. Too late, and I'm too tired.

I'll be darned - I've got a fish on the hook already. Probably just another CL flake, but we'll see.

RE: the storm - From the Contra Costa Times:

"1 p.m.: Mount Diablo State Park is closed until further notice due to the stormy weather.
Downed trees, flooding, landslides and rock falls have been reported on the park's road. Winds have been particularly forceful on the mountain, according to a statement from the state Department of Parks and Recreation. Gusts have been ranging from 55 to 85 mph, with a top wind speed of 110 mph was recorded this morning at the visitor center.

To check when the park roads will reopen, call 925-837-2525."

Probably a good weekend to stay in the garage and put together a few bikes.

Will do, it's pretty grungy though. It's 105 from what I've been reading on it. Pictures are hard to come by. I found one image of the levers.

I love the signature! Having raised an orphaned squirrel early last year, it hits close to home, hehe. Interesting animals, and they definitely live by their own set of rules. When they're young, they sleep constantly, then after that they want to be ON you at all times. Usually on top of your head, or the middle of your back where you can't reach them, lol.,,,,BD

6th pic from the top are golden arrow levers

Heh, a few summers ago I was rescuing one from the clutches of my kittys jaw (err with good intentions, I suppose..ugh), when I pried it free it climbed all the way up my arm and perched on my shoulders, I was rather surprised.. although I guess when somethings trying to eat you below you;ll take your chances!

Yep, and most of them are really not that scared of people, it's more like cautious indifference. There were a couple where I could get within 3-4 feet of the feeder, before they'd even stop to look at me. The one we raised would come down from the tree and leap at us for about the first two or three weeks. After that we'd see him off and on, and now I don't think I could recognize him.

Here's the Bianchi, and the closeup of the very grungy golden arrow. Also the updated New Years Eve Sprite catch. I put the B15 on, seat post and FD/RD from the Super Grand Prix. Weirdest part? There was some brown clear overspray on the the original FD and cranks? Did they paint these bikes with the cranks on? I know the BB is painted, at least on the left.,,,,BD

Mid-80s Raleigh Grand Prix?

Picked up a 19" Raleigh Grand Prix for $8 at the local thrift store--531 lugged frame, Mavic SUP wheels w/Continental tires, 8-speed cluster, shimano 105 rear derailleur & shimano 105 down-tube shift levers,
shimano golden arrow front derailleur, dia-compe g sidepulls, raleigh stamped 52-42 crank, needs cleaning & lubed but appears fine. I don't have a camera but I included a shot of a TALL '85 Grand Prix that is the same color & lettering except mine has a white fork & head tube as well as white chainstays & seatstays. I know that some of the components are not original, however I would like to date the frame and get an idea of what it had for original equipment.

That old Shimano 105 'Arabesque' stuff is just sooooooo nice. I own a tatty NZ built Healing road bike with 105 Arabesque components; - I couldn't believe my luck when I picked it up for just $NZ10.00.

That GP must be from the 80's. They used 20-30 tubing on those through 1978 or 1979.

Yike, but that is sweet!! (Display of ignorance alert) What was Cinelli's connection to a Paramont frame? I was more surprised to the stamp on the BB than I was to see the Gruppo.

Wish I had the calipers! My Super Course also has the arrow, wonder if it has the brakes on it? The Bianchi is full on but has dia Compe G style without the G on it, and 600 aero levers that are newer than the bike. Cranks, derailleurs, and shifters are all arrow.,,,,BD

Nice looking Paramount. Golden arrow on a golden bike, nice combo! I wonder if it would be safe to cutout the indented parts of the crank, like the Voyageur?

Flea market finds

Went for a stroll at the flea market this morning and spotted a few interesting bikes, but fewer than an average Sunday. I was looking for a set of 24" rims but came up empty handed.

This Hersil had an interesting dual-top-tube frame and rod-brakes but a closer examination suggests that it's a relatively new bike and badly constructed. Seat stays were bolted to the seat clamp, and the brakes looked really dangerous. The chain guard was fully enclosed, but made from a very thin piece of sheet steel. No sign of its country of origin, but I'm guessing China or India. Seller was the optimist of the day with a $125 asking price.

This Peugeot looked like it was stored reasonably well, though it probably hasn't been ridden in a long time. Despite the Simplex derailleurs and a saddle recovered with a dirty sweatsock (really!), this might have been a good deal at $25.

The Motobecane was the best thing we found, but it was too tall for me and it had a nasty ding in the top tube just forward of the seat tube. Plastic toy BMX seat and clothes hanger kickstand give it extra style points. Seller was asking $35.

Cinelli (a company since '48 or so) was the supplier of frame components including BB shells, fork crowns, etc. You'll find these on many marques.

Um..... the seatstays are always bolted to the seatclamp on this style of heavyweight roadster bicycle. If they weren't you'd have a truly horrible time trying to get that chaincase off for maintenance purposes. And rod-brakes aren't dangerous either. I have several rod braked bicycles and a tricycle too and provided they are setup correctly (which most bike mechanics can't do these days) they are very good and reliable brakes. I'd have that Hersil like a shot btw. You missed out on a good bike.

I have nothing against rod brakes and I know they've been used for ages, but these looked pretty flimsy (and way out of adjustment...) I've never heard of Hersil, where are/were they made?

The Hersil looks like every bicycle I saw in the countryside of Peru on a visit a year or two ago. I wanted to get one and ship it home so bad. Not saying they originated there, but there were an AWFUL lot of them.,,,,BD
