But let me guess: Bikes contributed to the onslaught of Global Warming as factories ramped up production, i.e. more coal was burned to produce steel and tires, and then more coal was burned to transport steel and tires, and then even more was burned to transport the finished product to the consumer. Then the bicycle led to the development of the automobile, and now we know the rest of the story (sorry Paul Harvey)! 120 years later, here on BF-C&V we have determined that without a doubt the bicycle is to blame for the start in the rise of the global average temperature.
In this case I should rent a back hoe, dig a deep trench and bury this antique safety bicycle below the 8 foot frost line and let mother earth take it back to it's original ferrous self.

I think the translation is:
"Maybe we could get more to ride if they knew all the damage they caused in the beginning."
I'm not certain that helps much, eh?

BTW, I'm going to head back to the dump today and look for the handlebars. My guess is that they were taken off for transportation to the dump and tossed on the pile seperately. I hope not much scrap metal came in yesterday and the bars weren't tossed to the very top (which must be 10-12 feet tall at this point). I also wich I knew exactly what to look for, i.e. straight, curved, dropped, etc.

I might talk to one of the workers to see if they remember when it came in last week to see if the bars were with the bike.

I received an email from the owner of Copake Auction yesterday. He says he is uncertain about the ID of the Safety Bike I found at the dump and wants to see it in person. I hope to drive over to see him near the end of the month (a good day trip). He did say he thought even without the handlebars, saddle and tires, it was worth somewhere in the range of $2500-$4500!
And it's not even CF, Ti, or Reynolds 531!

Antique Safety Bicycle UPDATE:
I drove to Copake, NY and back today to deliver the old safety bicycle I found at the dump last spring. The bike will be in the April 12 Vintage Bicycle Auction at Copake Auction. A preview of the items for sale can be found here. https://www.copakeauction.com/gallery...me=2008bicycle I saw some of the bikes which will be auctioned. Probably the most impressive sight was the collection of 25-35 vintage pedal cars. 90% looked brand new.
In cleaning the safety a little before the trip I found a few more clues. Stamped on the outside of the pedal cages were the words "Covington Machines." Also "Covington" was stamped on the rear hub plus another word I couldn't read. Also inside of the rear sprocket was the number "88." I hope that this all points to the bike being made in 1888 in Covington, England, which was the birth place of the modern safety bicycle. If so, I hope this increases the value.
BTW, while on the NY state road heading from I-90 south to Copake, I passed a road named "EAST HILL." The only camara I had was on my cellphone. Even though I took a picture, I don't know how to transfer it to my computer or Photobucket to post. If anyone can help, that would be great (it's a Razr V3m phone). If not, I'll make certain I take a real camara when I go back for the Auction in April.

That is the coolest find ever.
I have to point out that John Dunlop was Scottish, not Irish, and the commercial production of his pneumatic tyres (in Ireland) did not commence until 1890 so that may give further clues to the bike's date of manufacture. It is also possible that the revolutionary new pneumatic tyres were fitted at some point in the bike's life.
There is not a lot of difference between the Scots and the Irish as they both like to drink... it is just that one of them hates to pay for it.
Those "BMX" wheel tugs originated with very early bicycles and can be seen on early fixed gear and coaster bikes with rear facing dropouts.

Let us know how the sale of your bike goes as well.

I doubt it. The software is very specific to your model phone. I have a lesser Motorola model that wasn't even recognized by the earlier version (4.0) software until I did a free update on the Moto site. The discs on ebay are the correct software, just much less than what Moto wants.

I hope to bring a few bikes and a whole lot of parts. It will depend on if I have the 2 & 1/2 days to invest. We'll need to meet. Do you have any parts you want to try to sell? Maybe we could set up a spot together?

It's good to see that the safety bike moving on. So sad to think of it abandoned. Tsk, what were the previous owners thinking?
Anyway, it sounds as if there could be a nice little meet and greet there. Photos, photos, photos!
I need to start collecting East Hill photos. Unfortunately, my own East Hill is nowhere identified as 'East Hill' on any official sign

I don't know if I have much to offer the swap meet besides a smile, excitement, and some $$. I'm picking up my next project, a early 1960's Dawes, next weekend. Plenty of time to make a shopping list
But yes, we'll have to meet up!
