Either that, or some fixie clubbing hipster who plays music while performing trackstands.

It is some sort of loopback account. When you send a message to the buyer, it just kicks your message back to your email account.

Doesn't eBay do that by default?

A jerk, but a smart one. However, I wonder how many times can he pull that one off before eBay starts noticing.

Okay, I am not sure why you are blaming Ebay. They got a complaint saying the seller doesn't own the bike. They contact the seller and he says "yes I do". What real proof do we have that he doesn't, other than some pictures of the bike on another website?
Then someone hacks into someone's account, hopefully none of us, and makes a sham bid. We all know that happened. What else could they do. I suggest nobody bid on it next time. Then the guy will be even more PO'd.

Because he has it against his account that there have been enough similar cases before (some of which utilizing photos from other sites then Bikeworks.NYC) + the testimony of the seller of the Bob Jackson.

Take care,

Well, for one thing, EVERY article he's had listed for auction has had the photos stolen from someone else's website.

If eBay were to contact the owners of the websites, they would know that this person is stealing photos, and in some cases, exact descriptions from the websites.

Approximate population of Arock OR is about 16 people. They have a one-room schoolhouse there, K-8th grade.

Oh yeah, that too...all these bikes belong to him, even though they are in different parts of the country, each one came from an 'estate sale', claims that the bike is 'in x', then when asked about local pickup, claims bike is 'in y', and never gets back to the person asking about local pickup.

Totally believable to me.

Hey folks,

Just got in from an M/C party and caught up on what's been going on. I'd been following this at work today, which ended about 40 minutes before the auction ended.

As someone who's been doing nothing more than monitoring what's been going on - nice work. Yeah, you can't always figure out ahead of time, and it won't always end the way you hope it will, but just because you took the time to stop someone from getting ripped off is a pat on the back unto itself.

This is something we (as a group) have to watch for in the future. And be especially careful as to who we're going after. I'd rather see some innocent get ripped off than have someone legitimate who's trying to sell a bike or parts get shut down unfairly.

And don't ever expect eBay to overly worry about the buyer. After all, they make THEIR money off the seller. That term 'caveat empetor' - that's been around for at least 2500 years now, hasn't it? And for bloody good reason?

...and? So what?

Let's hear an elaboration - no sense in just saying "I like THIS" without a little background as to why you feel that way.

Just trying to make sure that the art of making a case for one's viewpoints isn't lost in mindless statements.

Lsst nite when looking over eBay there were 3 or 4 similar auctions all with new sellers with 0 feedback. Seems to be a lot of fraud in bikes on eBay this week.

Elaboration: a seller that has a sale go bad has a smaller loss than a buyer that gets scammed. The difference is a multiple, usually an order of magnitude or two.

Thank you for taking a stand about the importance of making a case. I was going to, too, but I am studying and my brain is fried. It's damn late here.

Nice job, and it is equally nice to see that thinking isn't considered a passing fad - yet.

This has been a masterful plot, but do you all really think that this rip-off artist will dutifully pay up his eBay fees from a scam bid? And that his registered eBay name and address are legit? I know of a bridge in Brooklyn that's surely for sale!

If he's stupid enough not to do enough research on his item before creating an auction that - for his proper success - is believable, then there's a good chance that the idiot might put a credit card on auto-billing.

Update: the winning bidder, loki7records, is supposedly a person named Alex Shulgin/aka Toxic-Toy/aka Dr. Shulgin. He's reputed to be a professional DJ in Buenos Aires.

For those of you not into the drug scene, Alex Shulgin is the inventor of Ecstasy.

So is there a reason east hill knows so much about Ecstasy?
