reshp1 - first this is a great build! The small black accents on the saddle pick up the black tape holding the bar tape, and the black hoods on the levers. Also the white panels on the frame with black lettering - it looks factory built!
I would look for an upgraded seatpost to really finish the build off (a modern post will help shed a few grams also).
Awesome looking build!

As for the seat post, because of the straight gauge tubing, the size it takes is 26.2mm, which is only made by a couple low end (Kalloy) sources, so I decided just to keep the stock one.

Good eye, yes it did have center-pulls. I didn't have any 1" spacers on hand and without the cable stop, the lock nut bottoms out before locking down the headset cone, so I had to leave it in for now.

Pretty cool. Thinking outside conventional boxes is always appreciated.
Nice style to the bike. And Welcome to the Forum.

I recently restored an old Dawes Super Galaxy Handbuilt that I found at a car boot. It had been badly repainted, but it felt light, and I only realised after shotblasting that it was a Dawes, and then the markings showed the model.
I don't like downtube shifters, and equally dislike the guide converters. Angle grinder removed the bosses, and I brazed a twin cable guide under the downtube, then moved the shifters on to the handlebars.
The derailleurs are front modern mountain bikes. I could have used the rear derailleur with SSI, but the only way currently is to use handlebar end shifters, as other shifters use the wrong handlebar diameter, which are solid and won't go round the drop handlebar bends.
Same applies to crank and frewheel - mountain bike again.

Well folks, I debated for some time if I would post this bike here, as it's on the cusp of what I consider classic and would have come with Ergo's from factory. But at the end of the day it's lugged steel, 1" fork and has down tube shifter bosses, so i think it fits
When I created this thread all those years ago, I never would have thought it would have gotten this big or become such an iconic resource.
Here is my newly built Merckx Strada OS 97/98 model.
I build her with a Centaur 10 speed groupset and matching Vento wheels.
Finishing kit it Deda Piega, 3T and Thomson.
Brooks C17 saddle, Look pedals, Elite cages round her out.

Wow! Fantastic build. Love the look of the cockpit. Great colors and balance. I don't think i'd change a single thing.

Thanks for the kind words. The Strada has fast become my favourite bike to ride. I'm looking forward to a mate of mine taking some proper pictures of it against a white background.

I think (therefore I am full of it) that, as the originator of the post, you can post whatever you please.
However, I also think, that you've done a fine job of a build and if you have any doubts, I'll pay shipping.
I mean, it doesn't fit me, but who cares? It's killer.

I can finally join the club as I finished building up the Mercian, just in time for road season to end! Hopefully still many miles ahead of me before winter, though. Here she is on a Labor Day shakedown ride. I'm very impressed with the Campy 10 speed stuff, which I hadn't used before. This was my first brifter build.
The frame was specifically designed for audax, so it has a racier/sportier geometry, but uses 531st -- the touring tubing. I was worried that might make it feel dead on arrival, but the ride is very lively and it climbs like a goat.
Mostly Daytona with Record cranks and Gran Compe centerpulls. I went with the centerpulls because they're nutted and I wanted to keep an English club bike flavor.

This is, by far, my favorite forum. The builds posted here have been strongest in feeding by bicycle addiction. Here's my submission:
1995 Bianchi Veloce, found on theBay. Seller reported riding only 200 miles on it, and it shows in its very clean condition - only a couple of chips and scratches. It must have been stored inside - even the tires were in like new condition after 20 years! I hope it qualifies, having come with Campy Veloce 8-speed, but I'm claiming a pass because of its downtube shifter bosses and threaded fork!
My dream of an Italian lugged steel frame compelled me to pull the components off my Scott CR1 for the build, which includes:
Ultegra 6700 shifters, derailleurs, crank, bottom bracket
Ultegra 6800 brakes
Mercury M3 carbon clincher wheelset
Continental GP4000S tires
Specialized Rib Cage cages
Selle Italia SLR saddle
Fizik Microtex bar tape (if it's got any life yet, I'll re-use it!)
New to the build:
Fizik Cyrano seatpost 27.2
Origin8 stem, bar, headset
The black decals inspired my all-dark color scheme. I think it really shows off the classic Bianchi celeste. The build came together as a fairly light package, I'm guessing under 20 lbs. And, no surprise, because it's one of the main reasons behind the bikes on this thread, it rides like a dream: lively, incredibly smooth, and fun. I've tried quite a few frames/materials over the last few years, but I know I'm going to keep this one for a while!

Details on th wheelset?
Totaly agree with that, what a gorgeous bike!
I've upgraded my 1985 Gazelle Champion Mondial with Shimano 7700 parts. Ex race-stuff, so with huge "shimano" logo's everywhere. Only the brakes are 6600 (and were already there). The running gear used to be 6500, witch already was a great shifting group. But I didn't expect the difference to be so big, the 7700 shifters are simply fantastic.

What do you wanna know? They're FIR Aria's with Fir-front axle and Ultegra rear axle so i assume they may originaly been built for Campa. Spokes are aero and they're not very comfy. Altough it's a lot better now i've replaced the michelin classics with Veloflex Masters (23) and latex inner tubes.
