Excellent Miyata

I second that. Lovely.

Cool bike!

Which wheelset CM?

Those are the bullets I sometimes put on my Anderson. This was more of just a fun build to build a hill capable ride that was more about speed on shorter evening rides. We'll see how that works out in the spring. I found the bullets were a little more aggressive looking on the Anderson than I wanted. Went with hed Ardennes on that instead.

I made some changes over the past few weeks, including Ultegra derailleurs, a carbon fork (nashbar), Fizik bar tape and a stem that fits a little better. New tires are on the way, and a new, lighter wheelset is in the plans for the near future.

It's unbelievable how well this bike rides. The Ultegra front derailleur made a world of difference, which is baffling since the 5700 and 6700 FD's have the same design.

Enjoy:

Best looking miele ive seen. How did a miele end up in Texas?

plonz 02-04-17 08:14 PM

^Your Miele is sweet and looks wicked fast. A couple of us ride vintage steel in the Sugar Land, Katy and Energy Corridor areas so maybe we'll see each other on the road someday.

It is a suntour cable stop intended for bar end shifters, but will work just swell with STIs. No adjustment barrel, but your derailleur will have one.

^This. My 1981 Trek 710 with a 5700 group. And if you were installing a 5800, 6800, 9000 FD you can use an inline barrel adjuster.

Your post is awesome because as I looked at the first pic the FIRST thing I thought of was all that pretty black in the grouppo, the stem, seatpost... and that GLEAMING chrome fork... while pretty by itself - it stuck out for me in the original build!

Fantastic job on the upgrades and the carbon fork!

Maybe in ten years the next build could be shiny bits and the fork could go back on it... and be at home!

Anyway, great update!

Thank you! I'm not sure. My friend found the frame/fork on CL when I was at school in Austin, and it didn't fit him so I got it from him.

Awesome! I'm trying to get into road riding, and I've been doing George Bush Park and Terry Hershey so far. Do you guys have organized rides?

Thank you! The fork came with the frame, and it was an easy decision to get rid of it because 1) it was chrome 2) it wasn't the original miele fork 3) it was pretty heavy and 4) it was pitted along the legs and didn't look very good up close.

I got this Falcon San Remo frame (531c steel) from a forum member a while back, had it set up as a classic with a leather saddle and DT shifters for a few years, then I borrowed most of the parts off it this past summer. I finished putting it back together as a go-fast rig a couple weeks ago and this is a blast to ride - the brakes are lightweight Gran Compe sidepulls and the rest of the components are a mix of 7400 Dura Ace and Tricolor bits, so it's practically still a C&V qualifier despite having STI levers:

I need to find a stem 1 cm longer and a set of shallow drop bars to make it perfect, but as pictured it's quite comfortable to ride in the drops, just a tad short on the hoods right now.

That's a super clean bike, really nice! I agree on the stem, it looks short. If you matched the bottle cages, it'd be absolutely perfect. :thumb:

Thank you. I stare at it often and it always gets attention when I ride it. I'm very happy how it turned out.

It's What I Do...

This was a run-of-the-mill `70's Gitane Gypsy Sport:

All of the components are new except the headset, and that is slated for replacement with alloy next winter. Here's the rear-view:

Trek 400 - the unholy trinity

5 Attachment(s)
My recently finished 1989 Trek 400. It features the unholy trinity of Sram, Shimano and Campy parts. Runs pretty darn smooth for mixing and matching. Frame was marketed as a crit geometry, but still fits 25s (which measure almost 27 on the DT R460s).

Chrome Molly 02-15-17 06:42 PM

Not sure how I failed to notice, but that is a very nice ride. Maybe not STI or Ergo equipped, but very pleasing to the eye. Nice Harriet island photos.

Now you can have the SRAM v Shimano v Campy argument while you ride. Even as a bashup, that is a really nice upgrade for your 400.

OH! Sorry about that. I guess I misunderstood. But now I have been to the Google and acquired The Answer:

"...the terms STI and STD are thrown around a lot. Well using acronyms does wonders for convenience, but falls short on explaining the significance of these words. STI stands for Sexually Transmitted Infection."

But seriously, I interpreted the thread title to mean indexed shifting and altered ergonomics. I'm not hip to the newer roadbike tech. I'll go back and read the OP next time.

Good eye, btw - those photos were taken on the bluffs by the Highbridge, just above Harriet Island.

STI = Shimano Total Integration (brifters)

Ergo = Campy Ergopower (also brifters)

So we need to chase out the bikes with SRAM brifters?

I'm glad to see I'm not the only heretic. I just finished a build with Gevenalle shifters, Shimano rear derailleur, SunTour front derailleur, Campagnolo crankset and a SRAM chain. I felt like a mad scientist putting it together.

I love the R460s, BTW. I've got those on two bikes right now and I'm finding it hard to justify any other rim choice for new wheel builds. Great value and I love the way they ride.

As long as we don't have photos of the Google definition of STI's on this thread, it's all good...

Indeed! After a 10-year USMC career during the 1980s I escaped tattoo-free, and the only thing that ever gave me PTSD were those horrible films they showed us prior to traveling overseas. :twitchy:

I was simply stating what the op was implying by sti and ergo in the thread title.

I'm sure someone has double tap on their bike and can post it although I can't fathom why you'd put sram on any bike.
