The original reason, apparently, was to create both strength and flex in the rear triangle; but, for the most part, the Colonel is correct.

A lot of English bikes wound up doing this. Notably, the Bates bikes had a bunch of curly stays and forks.
Bates' patented and easily recognizable Diadrant forks came along when they started building their Cantiflex frames which were stiffer than anything you could buy at the time and the fork was designed to better absorb shocks while actually being a little stiffer in corners than a conventional fork.

The Diadrant fork was also very recognizable in an age when a maker could not advertise their bicycle in sanctioned races just as Hetchins' rear stays are unique.

1994 Schwinn Crosscut. I finished it last night. Some fine tuning and it should be ready to ride.

BEFORE: When I picked it up this Summer.



AFTER: Built it up CX style. Added:
New tan-walled 35mm tires.
Zoom 0 offset stem.
25.4mm drop bars from a modern Schwinn Madison.
Tektro R200a levers.
Shimano XTR brake housing, and Avenir SIS housing.
Shimano M520 SPD pedals.
Shimano Ultegra 8-spd bar-ends.
A color matching Velo road saddle.
Swapped the STX RD for a matching Alivio RD to complete the Alivio group.

This is a 1984 Peugeot PGN 10 that the previous owner had bought in 1985 and used to tour Europe. Since then it had sat unused in the garage, but you could tell there was a strong sentimental attachment to it when I picked it up. I sent him some pictures of the "after" pictures but I never heard back. I should have routed the front brake cable behind the bar instead.

I don't remember the brands of either one, but the rear rack was a pretty dinky thing that had broken and been wired back together. It used p-clamps to mount to the seat stays and it showed...the paint was pretty rough right there. The front is all bolt together and is in better shape. It mounted to the eyelets and the fork crown.

^ I see your photo is on flickr. Upload your photos to flickr as usual. Minimum recommended size is 1024x768. If you upload in original size, flickr will offer several sizes to choose from. Select to view the Large size. When the photo is shown, (with Firefox) you right-click on it to select "Copy Image Location" from the drop menu. You've now copied the URL of the photo.

Back to the Bike Forums site....click on the "Insert Image" icon in the Quick Reply box. Paste the URL into the URL selected tab. You have an option to copy a version to the Bike Forums server, I usually don't as it slows things down and resizes the photo sometimes.

Thanks for that, hopefully this should be right.
This shot shows the new tube and lug fitted, ready to be brazed. The frame was damaged when a stuck post was removed

I was able to get a few bikes done in the last couple of weeks that have been hanging around for a few years waiting for the right moment, the first is a womans 1978-79 Raleigh Sports that I trash picked about 10 years ago. It looked like it didn't have many miles on it, it just sat in a damp shed somewhere until being tossed to the curb where I found it. The chain guard was in bad shape so I sanded it down to bare metal, primed & painted it gloss black & installed a decal I had here. I had a older Sports frame with a few good chrome bits still left on it that I installed on this one like the stem,bars & front brake assy, I also installed a NOS Japan made trigger shifter & cable I had. Everything else cleaned up pretty good and just needed to be serviced.

I installed new tires and a few baskets I had that have been in my way and needed a bike worth putting them on, this was it, I replace the original seat due to the plastic base crumbling when I sat on it and put the seat you see in the photo on it, I don't know where I got it but it is a lot more comfortable then the original one and it's a little wider at the rear with good spring action.Here are a few pics before & aft.
