The Milwaukee has been put back together for commuting duty starting Monday and the first day of classes. This is as built for the BWR. Today it has more saddle to bar drop with Ritchey WCS bar, stem and new Bikeribbon black tape. (Pictures to come.)

I recently moved my commuter setup from my International to my Shogun.

@ascherer, you got the whole thing done, including fenders and dynamo lighting. How do you compare the International and the Shogun?

noglider 08-07-24 01:31 PM

This is my commuter bike. It's a 1974 Raleigh International. I painted the frame and fork myself with a brush. It's mostly a parts bin build. Modern handlebars, Brooks Cambium saddle, 3x10 drivetrain, dynamo lighting, rack, fenders. Brakes are Tektro 559. I built the wheels myself.

I have a trio of vintage bikes I use for commuting.

Most days it’s my ‘72 Cilo Pacer. This is the view from the front of the school where I work. Livin’ the dream, right?

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...93da6268b.jpeg

If it’s raining, I take the Gitane Grand Tourisme with fenders.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5e7a447f7.jpeg

And if I want to hit some trails after work, sometimes I’ll grab the Motobecane Grand Jubile equipped with a triple and gravel tubulars.

It's been a zillion degrees out and I'm a fair-weather commuter. One thing I know for sure is the Shogun has a shorter top tube, necessitating a longer stem. I moved the basket to the rear like yours is so it may not be a fair comparison.

I love your bikes and the scenery. So are you a teacher, and if so, what do you teach? I changed careers and am in grad school for Special Ed.

Early 70s Peugeot set up as a single speed. Gets 10ish mi per week between June and September.

Not Vintage, but it is Classic.
It's my current bike for commuting to work and small errands.
Black Mountain Cycles MC frame with horizontal dropouts and cant brake posts.
Has a triple crankset from the mid-80s, bar end shifters, 9sp cassette, and a 139 half basket on the front.

My gugiefied Austro daimler, which also commutes sometimes.

'60's Carlton Franco Italia, it's accumulated it's fair share of replacement parts over the years as things have worn out, quite a lot of the paint has fallen off, and it's about an inch too big for me but it just keeps on keeping on...

I thought I would post a picture of my "commuter" bike, although I no longer commute on it. It is a 1984 Specialized StumpJumper Sport which I modified for commuting.

It is a seriously excellent bike that is fun to ride. It affords me a very enjoyable perspective on the world while riding, even back when I was commuting. You could see everything. People would smile and wave hello. I'd get fresh air and sunshine in the morning and quiet darkness at night (yes, it has excellent lighting). With all the add-ons, it is fairly heavy but it is not a slow or ponderous bike. In fact, it is quite lively, even "spirited" and climbs well due to the frame stiffness, Alfine gearing and good tires.

This is the replacement equipment focused on the role of commuting.
8 speed Shimano Alfine
North Roads bars
Lighting - DiNotte rear; Cygolite front
VO stainless fenders (but I never commute in the rain)
Brooks B67 sprung saddle
Brooks saddle bag
VO front rack
Schwalbe KOJAK tires
I have a paint-matched chain guard (but have not installed it).

This is very nicely done. My main commuter is a late 80s Specialized Stumpjumper Comp but I have not modded it other than to install fenders and a rack. Agreed that these are fun bikes to ride and make excellent commuters.

What do you commute on now? Anything?

I often commute on one of these bikes. This is my favorite model. It has no motor other than the rider. It has front and rear drum brakes, very durable and reliable in all weather. I've ridden this in snow and slush, and it's very good. The bike weighs about 50 lbs (23 kg). It has a continously variable ratio hub called Enviolo, formerly called NuVinci. I like the micro-adjustability and the fact that you can adjust the ratio even under full load. But it's heavy and inefficient. These bikes are not comfortable for me, so I rarely ride them more than 5 miles.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...fdc8c02ba.jpeg

The e-bikes are now more popular than the human powered ones, but even as a member, I have to pay to use them so I rarely do.

These also have two drum brakes. There is no ratio adjustment. The assistance kicks in almost immediately, and your speed varies with the torque you provide. It's easy to get to maximum speed which is about 18 mph. They recently lowered it from 20 mph. This bike weighs about 80 lbs (36 kg) so handle it carefully. For some reason, this bike has a very harsh ride, another unpleasant thing, so while I'm willing to ride it 8 or 10 miles, it's not exactly a joy. It's pretty darned useful.

No more commuting for me. I do ride every day, all year long, even on rainy days when it stops. I love riding my bikes. I rode the Stumpy to the beach and along the bike path today.

Tom, yes, I’m a 4th grade teacher—sometimes 4th/5th. This will be my 7th year teaching after spending most of my career in publishing. I know you also recently transitioned to teaching. A very rewarding profession! Good luck with the upcoming school year. :thumb:

It is. You need a strong hand to operate. We live in a 6-story landmarked apartment building converted from a warehouse. It's a wood frame building built in 1917. Wood frames were made illegal in 1930. The door weighs hundreds of pounds. It leads to the stairs. Thank goodness we have an elevator. I'll post a picture of the door in a few days.

Thank you! I was in the midst of job searching from April until just now. I got an offer. And then I realized while this is the first time I qualify for a full time teaching position, it's not wise for me to take one. I'm taking myself off the market, and I'll find part time work. I qualify because I'm halfway through my master's, but I should finish it before I do full time work. If I do both, I'll mess up at one or the other or both.

I was in 4th grade this year. Not what I had wanted, but I loved it anyway.

Yes, it felt great! And I think it opened my mind to seeing what my next steps are. It feels like quitting while I'm ahead. Well, not exactly, but something like it.

bikemig 08-10-24 04:20 PM

I picked up this bike over 10 years ago and it has seen service since then as a commuter. I think it's an '88 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp. It's still rocking the original 130 OLD 6 speed wheels and a few other original bits and pieces (rear U brake, headset, crank, and derailleurs).

Early Eighties Bob Jackson tourer, my commuter for nearly four years. Used for errands now that I’ve retired. I do miss my daily ferry rides across San Diego bay.

Current commuter, an '85 Trek 830. Ride a good bit on the Des Plaines river trail and it's perfect for that.

Getting this '83 Moto Grand Jubile ready for commuter duty. Putting some fenders on soon.
