The serial number that my bike has doesn't fit any of the typical serial numbers.

Serial #: WBT 5178U

I was hoping you could provide some insight into my bike.
The frame says it's a Nishiki Aero II. The front and back derailleurs are Suntour Cyclone M-II. The pedals are Shimano 600 OX (I think. The OX looks funny so I'm not entirely sure). The crankarms are Shimano DuraAce and it also says JAPAN 170 on the inner side of the crankarm. The seat says Kashimax aero and the seat post says Laprade.

I am not really sure what to glean from this.

Welcome to the forums. That's a Danish serial number. Your frame was built in 1981, so it could be a 1981 or 1982 model, though with a number that low, it's almost certainly the former. The pedals would be 600AX, which was one of Shimano's areodynamic groups of the era.

Edit: It's strange to mix SunTour and Shimano and other Aero II that I've seen have used SunTour Cyclone MK II with with a Sugino Aero Maxy crankset, so the crankest and pedals are likely replacements. The Aero Maxy was a swaged crankset, so the Dura-Ace would be a definite upgrade.

Oh that's very interesting. I bought it a while ago from a guy who said he was a retired bike shop owner I believe who was selling his collection. He said it was never ridden and only had wear from storage which seemed to be true from looking at it.

Hi all! This is my first time posting to a message board and I also don't know much about bikes but I am anxious to learn. I am sorry this question makes me a newb but I would love to know. My grandpa passed away and we are clearing out his stuff, I found this Nishiki bike (the stickers say SunTour FEMCO 1207 Tensile Tubing) he purchased in Renton, WA many years ago and would love to know more about it. The serial # is 1318045 and I spent some time reading the Nishiki Serial Number Database that was put together but they all start with a letter and ours doesn't. I am going to clean this baby up and ride it around but I would really love to know what I have here! Thanks for being gentle on the newbie, I appreciate the help!

Welcome to the forums. The subject bicycle appears to be one of the entry level Sport variants manufactured by Giant of Taiwan. There should be a date code one of the rear dropouts, format Gmmyy, where mm is the month and yy is the year.

It's definitely a 1986 model manufactured in 1985, as the other pictures in your gallery album show that it does not employ the logo style that was unique to the 1985 models. See 1985 Bel-Air below. Yes, I know it's a non-drive side photo, but sometimes I just have to accept what is submitted along with the S/N. Thank-you for posting.

Welcome to the forum. The serial number indicates a European model manufactured during the 1984 calendar year. Unfortunately, it does indicate when during the calendar year, so it could be a 1984 model or a 1985 model manufactured in late 1984.

In the USA, the Royale was an upper entry level model, bordering on mid-range but models do not always correlate between different markets. Consequently, to get an appreciation for the level of your Royale, we'll require photographs. Ignore the warning that you cannot post photographs prior to 10 posts. The photographs will upload to a gallery album where we can view them.

Picked up a really rough Nishiki Professional? off craigslist. Another serial number for T-Mar....

Very interesting (as Arte Johnson would say, in his best German accent)! The serial number appears to have a KI prefix, which would indicate 1979, but the frame appears to be earlier and I would have expected a KS prefix. Based on the fork crown, it looks like a Professional. An overall photo and photo of the seat lug/stay attachment would provide confirmation. This is a case where I would be very interested in getting some date codes from the derailleurs and crankarms, as the bicycle looks circa 1973-1974.

Brake levers show 3/75. Most certainly replaced at some point. I will post some more pics later today.

It's definitely a Nishiki Professional. The rear derailleur and drive side crankarm are both from May 1972, so it should be a 1972 or 1973 model.

Being a Professional from this era, it would be Katakura manufacture, not Kawamura, and the S/N indicates September 1972, in which case it is most likely a 1973 model.

Here is Nishiki Trim Master. Serial number 89F00889 = 1989?

Complete 105 groupset (1050) in 2x6 friction which was only manufactured for about three years in the late 80s before Shimano presented 2x7 version. Also the wheelhubs are 105. Original Vetta saddle changed to equally period wise Corsaire (both made in Italy). SR cage pedals seen on pics changed to modern lock pedals. Cages and straps were taken off the pedals already befere the pics were taken. New bar tape added. Also new brakepads.

Bike was originally so dirty it looked almost black from a distance. Kept in a shed for over 10 years and not driven at all. After all that everything still worked pretty well on the test drive before the maintenance. Now cleaned and set ready for (fun) driving.

We know T-Mar collects serial numbers. Here is one minus the bike ;-) LBS called me to pick up this box that was getting thrown away.


The other side is trashed. This will look good in the bike cave.
