Cinelli track stem?

Any idea what this might be worth?

Nope

Time to come clean - I was sorting parts today, and came across this in my bin. I took some pics and tossed it on eBay, and I'm getting several emails of interest and requests to state a BIN. I deduced from all the interest that it might be worth more than the ~$10 I thought. So, I figured I'd ask here.

The truth is, I don't know what I have and probably should have asked first before tossing it up for grabs.

I've seen NOS ones in that size go for $150 or less. That one looks a bit rough. Also, I would ask the seller to check it with a protractor, it might not be a track stem. I see the -17 degree road stems like that listed as track stems on ebay all the time.

It's got the right angles for a track stem, but yea, I've also seen road stems listed as track. Actually, I just spent quite a bit more(165) for a steel track stem. I know I probably paid too much, but I need one for my resto, and it's damn near perfect.

I'm pretty sure that this nasty drop would qualify it as a track stem. Was there a model number embossed, or is it older than that? You should point out the old Milano logo, just in case someone doesn't know what they are looking at.

I think you'll be pleasantly suprised...

Hopefully you'll do as well as redxj did on his Cinelli Priest bars that he basically got for free!

Good Luck!

OK - better pics, with the logo evident and described, as well. I have no idea where I got this from, but I know I never took it off a bike. Must have been in a box of parts I got from somewhere.....

I have a Cinelli Milano stem that is a bit newer than the one in the auction, how would I be able to ascertain whether it is a track or a road stem?

wow it looks like it is potentially a #3 if so they are even more rare than a number 2, you should measure the angle to determine this and point it out. If it is a number #3 is is worth the $150 even missing the bolt, though I think it is a little pricey if it's a number #2.

I have a number #2 with matching bars.

Well, if it was in great shape, I would consider it, as the one I bought may wind up being too short. I could also take the bolts off the one I bought for this. But I have the feeling that buying the correct bolts could also be expensive.
Did you up the BIN price with the new pics? Sorry, even though you may get that, there's a big difference between polishing and rechroming(if it indeed needs it).

Who's hairy hand is that? You couldn't get your wife/daughter to hold it, or would they want a cut of the auction?

jet-a regular strada stem from that era (and any era up to a couple of years ago) has a drop of about 17 degrees. That drop roughly matches the 73 degree angle of the head tube, and more or less makes the stem extension level with the earth.

Track stems are designed to reinforce the totally maschochistic tendencies of hard core trackies, squashing their perenium with stem angles of up to (beyond?) 30 degrees.

More aero, donchaknow?

Looks lie a #2 drop to me. #1 drop was basically -17 degrees, yielding a level extension with typical head angle. The #1 was a universal model use for road and track use when road bars were also steel.

#3 was the most radical drop, I do not think this one is if memory serves, I lost the URL but a CR member put together a Cinelli visual chart that shows much.

Later the 2a alloy stem became the track stem.

Looks in reasonable shape, the lack of a steerer binder bolt will hurt its big dollar value, we will see if the Buy it NOW alternative is too seductive....

Maybe I'm measuring this wrong, but my little protractor says the drop is -30. Is that possible, or am I measuring it the wrong way?

Looks like it's about 58 degrees i.e. number 3.. ***CHA-CHING!***

I've never actually seen one before.

I'm stunned.

Thanks, everyone, for helping me identify this stem. Your filling in the details for me was instrumental in selling it for such a high price. I wish I had a boxful.

BBQ tomorrow at my place, open bar. Don't be late.

Hey, thanks for posting the Cinelli reference, Yes, that is a #3 drop, better reset my memory. The shop for which I worked, had a big selection, we sold quite a few #3 drop stems, usually longer as the acute angle just does not place the bars out much. What I found very interesting back then (1975), Cinelli sent some combinations With the badge! Even back then some permutations were new OLD stock, only a few, grabbed up by the owner's son for the "cool" factor.

I got the impression somewhere that the badge was an option which cost more.
