Kramersschwinn, I would be most grateful if you could confirm the rear hub date. Incidentally, not sure if you're into these machines or not, but here is a photo of my 1951 Raleigh Sports "C" Tourist for your enjoyment:

I adore the near-perfect condition of your chaincase, incidentally

Where is the best place to find the light gray grips? E-bay?

The examples on this bike are reproductions done by Peter Kohler (look for him on the CR list) a couple years ago - I got them from a fellow who had not used his set. Not sure if there are any more available. Ask around and keep an eye on the 'Bay.

If all else fails, grips of a similar pattern were produced by Raleigh in the '70s and early '80s, though they were far thinner and hard vinyl, as opposed to the thick and soft/rubbery feel of the originals. The later examples sometimes prove slippery on the bars as well.

Take care,

-Kurt

Kurt , I cleaned off the rear hub of 2 of the bikes and ..54 7 FG Dyno-Four

and 55 1 FG Dyno-Four was stamped on them
the other 2 i will check out later. I hated to degrease the hubs , they had what looked like original paper labels 2" x 1" with a name or something on them.
Thanks for the help

Excellent. Do let me know which hub date corresponds to which serial number. Also let me know if all the bikes are the same model as the Superbe Sports Tourist in your first photos.

I must add this data to my chart - looks as if the T serials ran a little bit longer then I thought (either that, or I had not been given much information for bikes post-'52.

P.S.: If you can, do photograph one of the serials for me. I gather these are on the bottom bracket, correct? I'm short the proper bottom bracket serial number image for the serial chart on The Headbadge.

Wow - consecutive serial numbers, no less. Considering you got four of them, I'd say that you stumbled across a particular batch shipped over here to the States.

Mind if I use that photo of the seat lug on The Headbadge?

P.S.: Allow me to revise what I said before - with those hub dates and serials, I'd say you have early 1955 models.

I will post pictures of the entire lot. The did omit 1 digit in the serial , 591114 t. All the serial #'s run consecutive 591112t , 591113t,591114 t the womens has a different seat attachment and it apears the ser# is covered. I will check it this week

THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION AND PICTURES

Bikes: Bianchi hybrid. Dunelt 3-sp. Raleigh basket case. Wanting a Roadster.

1953-1956 were the golden years. Your Raleighs are problably the best quality they ever built.

I cannot agree more. The '50s stuff from Raleigh is truly remarkable and deserves that praise, despite the fact that I haven't run into a Schwinn collector who will admit it. They probably never worked on a '50s Raleigh in the first place...

Bikes: Old Schwinns and old Raleighs

You'll find that your era of Raleigh chrome there is very high quality. I would rank my Raleigh chrome second only to the chrome I have on my Torrington bars.

I've had less luck with Schwinn chrome.

You should have seen how bad the rims were on the '51 ladies' Sports "C" Tourist I got from Neal - and how minty they came out afterwards, original stainless spokes and all. Hardly had to put any effort into it, and not a single pit in the chrome to boot.

I'll say one thing though - the amount of polish applied to their stainless steel rims (the '51 above has a pair on it) leaves a bit to be desired. More of a satin finish, similar to the appearance of a clear anodized Campagnolo Nuovo Record crankarm. I realize these things were mass-produced, but I'm quite sure they could have been shined up a bit more by factory if they had desired.

It looks like a nice clean up on that bike-- you're very lucky, these are not your average "Sports" that you find at a garage sale or in a barn. Yours has some really nice additions like the gear case and electrical components.

It's so great when a classic bike in need of a home finds someone who will love and appreciate it!

Raleigh 4 speed

I have just picked this up, dated 1960/61 going by the hub and frame no. I am in the UK. It's a bit rough but it's got all it's original bits, and even though it's in a bad way I love the saddle bag!

^^Yes, I can see why you like that saddle bag! But I wouldn't call that bike 'rough.' Looks pretty good to me.
