On my routine ride I came across this flock of geese picking over the bean fields around Weems International Airport. I tried to get closer for a better shot but the TSA got into a big flap about it.

Rode downtown St Pete for the 100th Anniversary of Commercial Flight event. 100 years ago today, paid passenger service started between St Pete and Tampa. An aircraft was scratch built by Kermit Weeks (of Fantasy of Flight) but was not quite ready to fly....not getting enough power/speed....sounds like me!)
Cool and grey, then the rain started...COLD soaking rain.... :-( Even in Florida!

No pics today, just a brief ride report. After riding indoors for exercise I took the Bertin out for half an hour this afternoon just to say I did. Temperature about 25F, the sky mostly white, the air still and quiet. If I'd dressed properly I could have stayed out much longer.

As I was returning home I saw Matt, a young (post-high school) fellow who lives a few doors up. (His dad, who passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack a few years ago, had once done us a huge favor.) Matt had asked me this past summer about putting road bars on his bike. I hadn't seen him around for a while so I rode back to ask if he was still interested. When I mentioned some of the possible snags he pulled his bike out to show me. It's a new-ish Cannondale hybrid with a large-clamp flat bar, threadless headset, indexed shifting. There is no way to convert it easily from my meager inventory of parts. So I offered to lend him a bike, maybe just give it to him if he ends up riding it a lot. Of course he objected, and I said look, I've got six bikes ready to ride, I'd never miss it. I'm thinking the Centurion, or maybe the Bertin. He said he didn't care about speed but I figure he'd do better on a faster bike.

He probably doesn't understand why I'd do this for him, but it's the least I can do.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Took this pair for a spin today in St. George Utah. 55 degrees was tolerable!

I didn't get on a bike today, oddly. The past three years I've done a century on New Year's Day.

first ride of 2014

I had to get out today to start the year off right, so i went out for a short ride of 31 miles. It's too cold for me to get out much longer than the 2 hrs it took for this ride. Temp was similar to yesterday, 25 degrees with a 10 mph wind, felt like the teens. I drove up to Smithfield and started from there; Smithfield-N. Smithfield-Burrillville-Chepachet.

I've heard there are some good mtb trails in there, but it is definitely hunting season. I heard distant shots while I rode by.

The Kelly got the nod today. My suntour compe ft derailleur (on the Dawes) needs some love, it doesn't seem to shift in the cold. This was my first ride with ergo since the summer. Very smooth shifting.

For Christmas I gave my girlfriend a bicycle. It's not vintage, but it sort of has the look, and she loves it. Due to some health problems it's extremely hard for her to be physically active, yet doing so would be very beneficial. Running is out of the question, and walking more than a mile or so is very painful for her, so I figured a bike might work. She'd ridden a little in the past, but not much and it's been many years. So imagine my surprise when today we rode about 14 miles and she experienced very little pain at all! In fact, she wasn't even especially tired, we just had to head back due to cold weather and not having the proper clothing for it. Anyway, I took my camera but the only picture I got was one of our bikes just before we left.

She has to go quite slow on hills, but she's surprisingly fast on the flats and downhills. The best part is she is no longer limited to walking and buses, which is a pretty big deal (neither of have cars).

Re-rode the same route I posted about a few weeks ago in this thread, but with a brand new riding buddy, known to BF readers as mikemowbz. He got a (not very C&V) Richey Breakaway Cross bike for Xmas, expedited (sorta) by me. Basically he just had the seller ship to me because shipping to Canada is so dear and I'm just a ferry ride away from him. Pretty cool bike, designed so the rear triangle detaches from the rest of the frame and the whole thing fits into a regular full-size suitcase specially designed to hold it. Here's Mike & bike on the edge of the ocean, down at the Lower Elwha Indian Reservation, about 7 miles into the ride. Weather wasn't as clear as last time, but still warmish (high 40's), not raining and so basically a shirt-sleeve kinda day.

[snipped a couple of pics and text]

And we stopped by the industrial waterfront part of town on the way back home to check out the big log freighter that was just topping up its load; probably on its way to China.

If interested, go back to the previous thread linked to above for more and better pix.

Great riding down on the Olympic Peninsula, even on a grey day (and with the tail end of a long bout with bronchitis taking a bit out of my sails).

Lascauxcaveman
proved a great guide, not to mention a tremendous help in facilitating this orange little bit of holiday cheer. :thumb:

It's only fitting that this (not very C&V) Ritchey 'cross bike would roll over gravel, sand, sizeable stones, and mud (as well as some smooth asphalt) on it's maiden voyage. I'd love to be able to contribute a few more pics to this thread, but neglected to bring my camera.

I will not make that mistake when I return to the Peninsula with warmer weather - no doubt with the Ritchey in tow. Packing down into a regulation-size wheeled suitcase is enough to pull this one up to the front of the stable for travel - especially for a guy who relies on trains, buses, and ferry walk-ons rather than an automobile when distance or circumstance put a destination outside rideable range. It's my first bike built in a year in which my age counted more than one digit (if not in the negative), and first running threadless and STIs; in my defense, it's designed by Tom Ritchey, it's steel, and I immediately mounted Suntour Sprint pedals with clips and straps upon taking possession. We'll see if I can regain my legs to push it through a metric century in May...

Hope you can make it! After that first 6 or 7 miles of grueling climbing, the rest is cake. (more or less)

For those of you in the Pacific Northwest in the first weekend of May, here's a link to the Metric Century in question. You are all invited. This year's ride is set for Saturday, MAY 3rd. A great ride for anyone who has reasonably stout tires and doesn't mind a little climbing.

Fulfilling my resolution to ride more this year, I set off on the Paramount a few minutes ago, for a fast two hour ride. Before I turned the first corner I realized something was amiss; the back wheel was rubbing the brakes, and on further inspection is found to be seriously out of true--maybe a broken spoke. So I continue around the block(we have only one way streets), and by the time I get back home I have a flat on the front. My second ride on my brand new Michelin Sport tires. So I'll repair the flat on the Prelude and set off again in a few minutes. I'll report back later today.

Not an auspicious beginning. I replaced the tube in the rear Prelude wheel, and began pumping it up. I was losing air faster than I could put it in. The tire had been especially difficult to re-mount. Took it apart again only to find the snakebite that I expected. Pulled out another tube. Millenium brand. With the way things were going, I decided to refrain on that one. That left me with two good tubes, and I generally don't set out with only one spare. On to the next bike, the city bike. Its cones need adjusting before it gets ridden far, so we move on to the the 92 Giant Yukon. It only needs air and it's ready to go. It's now approaching 10:30.
I had a lovely ride out, and halfway back, while passing a gravel and asphalt plant, I suffered a blowout, on the rear. No prob; I have a spare. Well the spare turned out to be a 29er, and I'd realized, at some point, that I'd left my patch kit laying on the bench after all that patching earlier in the day. I did have some self stick patches but they wouldn't do for the gaping hole left by the blowout. So I whipped out my cell phone and called my wife, who happily agreed to come rescue me. I took the bike apart, including the pedals, thinking I would just shove it in the back seat rather than piss around with the rack. But when she showed up the dogs were in the back seat. Long story shorter, I'm home now, writing this post as it pours down rain outside. And we're 3 months into the dry season. Normally 6 months of beautiful weather and not a drop of rain.
What might I do for an encore?

Pic #3 is the road where we're looking at a piece of land to buy. 3 km from the village, and a stone's throw from pic#4, an abandoned hacienda that's being brought back to life.
The rest are pretty much self-explanatory.

spacemanz 01-02-14 04:56 PM

That metric century looks fun, but that's still way out of my skill level, LOL. I just did my 3rd day in a row, of roughly 20 mile round trip days, and that's like a world record, for me. ;) Temps are in the 40s here, day & night, not cold enough to snow, but still a bit chilly, if you don't dress right. It's a little tricky getting started, because I have to go downhill a mile & a half to the B-G trail, just enough to freeze you a bit & make your eyes water, then it's time to collect yourself, & start pedaling to warm up. :D

I drove myself nuts yesterday, trying to identify a pinging-type sound, & it turned out to be my old Spinergy Xero Light front wheel. It has a weird kind of spokes, similar to CF, and apparently they don't care for the cold either. ;) Don't go gettin' shot out there, wear bright colors & make plenty of noise. If in doubt, start talking to yourself. Loudly. ;)

Seedsbelize,
What an ordeal! That abandoned hacienda is beautiful. Paintball guns even in the Yucatan?

Rhm and I did a century around Long Island to welcome the new year. Overall, the weather was clear and cold. We had a stiff tail wind for the first half, and faced a strong headwind on the way back for only a little bit. The temperatures being so cold, the way back was a real slog. We left just as day was breaking and returned right after nightfall.

I was on the Ciocc. Here is a shot of the Ciocc-sicle. I got exactly one drink out of my water bottles before the tops froze shut.

There were a few locations where the roads had flooded and then froze over. Here Rhm walks his Lambert across one of the sketchier icy puddles:

Road through some backroads between Berkeley and Concord, CA to the east. Due to a confluence of family visits, busy work schedule, and recent holiday travels, it was the first meaningful ride in almost a month. One of my C-Record crank arms started to loosen, but was fortunate to find a hardware store with a somewhat uncommon 7mm allen key.

Anxiously awaiting your thoughts on the breakaway. I've been thinking of getting one myself. Vacillating between that and s and s couplers.
