Since we don't see a lot of this sort of trail here, I thought I'd share my Sunday ride through an active logging zone.
This is just above Lake Crescent near Port Angeles, WA, on a road that has probably been in place for 70 years. Nine miles of climbing to get to the top and I saw only a couple hundred acres of clearcutting, so it's a selective harvest, with a long-term plan to take a little here and there every other year or so. The harvest goes right up to the very edge of the Olympic National Park. I'm guessing this is the third time this area of the forest has been cut, because the oldest stumps I counted were about sixty rings, no trace of the really huge old-growth stumps I used to see when I was a kid out picking blackberries or just hiking along old logging roads. This time I wasn't riding C&V, but rather on my modern Trek MTB with the hefty suspension fork, making a really fast all-out descent pretty effortless. YEE-HAH! Sometimes it's feels good to climb a long hill and then bash your way back down, hell bent for leather. The road was in great shape, so it was pretty fast going. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...eRender-51.jpg http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...eRender-50.jpg http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...eRender-49.jpg http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...eRender-48.jpg http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...eRender-47.jpg |
^ Great pics! I have to get back out there before the weather changes, but life keeps getting in the way.
I had a fun 60-mile day yesterday. Parked the car at the Snohomish Trailhead and did Centennial end-to-end and then back again. Perfect weather, gorgeous scenery. That was one of the best 1/2lb burgers I ever ate! DD |
Did a mini bike camoing trip with my brother down in Dana Point. Camping was ok lol, there was just a highway and some train tracks near by. it was fun, but probably not going there again.

Hi all, I took my Trek 710 out for a 35 mile ride this morning. Great conditions, a little foggy most of the morning, but temps in the low 70's. I stopped and got 1 picture at an old dam in Griswold, CT that is going to be rebuilt over the winter. I did run into two issues today. The first one involved a group of 3 guys riding motorcycles. The first guy beeped as he went by me, not a big issue. The second guy buzzed me really close, maybe a foot from me, kind of unsettling. The third guy buzzed me and then cut me off, didn't miss me by a whole lot. I was way over on the right by the old entrance to the Plainfield Dog track. The track has been closed for at least 15 years, but the road was widened there when it was open to accommodate traffic when it was open. I was nowhere near the traffic lane when this happened. There is a lot up the road a half mile or so where motorcycle safety classes are held on weekends. I saw all 3 bikes enter the lot. I'm generally not confrontational, but something made me turn in and look for them. There were probably 35 or so motorcycles in there, and I couldn't tell which ones buzzed me. I made it a point to ride by all the bikes in there and make eye contact with everyone. No one said a word to me. I guess being in a group and having full face helmets gives a bit of false bravado. I felt a bit better after that and headed home. As luck would have, I got a flat about 5 houses from home, so I walked it in. Anyway, enough of that. Here's the picture from the dam.

A friend and I rode from his house in the suburbs through Hartford into Manchester to catch a cyclocross race and climb Mt Case.
http://i.imgur.com/DOEuRIl.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/3HICypU.jpg?1 On the way to his win in Cat 1/2. No one else in sight: http://i.imgur.com/VQKwveI.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/2083xuD.jpg?1 There were a couple nice looking Rock Lobsters in use, no pics of those. Our starting point is somewhere along the horizon in the below pictures, and the CX race is marked by the prominent white building located between Case Mt and Hartford (the same building pictured in the two photos below as well as the one above). http://i.imgur.com/Lkjgdmu.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/XOnIrV1.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/SLKDmnz.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/CZmcURV.jpg?1 The climb and decent were a blast. Rough, rocky tracks through the woods made more technical than expected by water erosion. (Bit it fairly hard in one spot on the way down...front end washed out into a rut.) We had a touch of rain on the way back home - it was a nice and refreshing rinse (though not enough according to his fiancée). http://i.imgur.com/onsJIu0.jpg?2 http://i.imgur.com/9uyRhZg.jpg?2 |
More gorgeous weather here, so I saddled up to do some real testing of my new Ergos. Parked the car over in my childhood neighborhood of Edmonds and paid my respects to a childhood friend:
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5801/...e8860303_b.jpg Then, onto the Interurban Trail to get down to Seattle. I bounced on and off the trail, going by Green Lake. Some beautiful houses along there: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5676/...337b7c38_b.jpg Obligatory pic of the Space Needle - and my bike: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5732/...edc66107_b.jpg Here's the International Fountain - the water jets to music: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5719/...53b01817_b.jpg Saw some interesting graffiti-art along the Interurban on the ride back: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5832/...ea611876_b.jpg I got in around 60 miles or so with all of my out-of-the-way stuff. Going to try to do a similar ride tomorrow - since you Cino guys/gals are probably having all the fun over in Montana! DD |
Nice pics DD!

14.25 miles in 55:45 for a nice, gentle, 15.3 mph pace.

My son had a soccer game in Marysville yesterday, so we loaded the Tandem on the car. After the game, he and I rode up to the Red Barn(where Drillium Dude rode to on his post above), and then back to Snohomish. ended up just shy of 50 miles, making this our longest tandem ride to date. My kid was a real trooper, riding that distance after chasing a soccer ball for an hour.

My sweetie and I took the tandem about Acadia Natl Park's Park Loop Road today. Didn't have time or energy to go around twice like we sometimes do. It was spectacular as always (except for the hard rain we had last night).

Went up to Anacortes for their Open Streets event, as there was also a vintage bicycle gathering/ride happening during the event. I brought my Hercules, and my friend brought his old Monark.
https://40.media.tumblr.com/c0801b3a...d9ko4_1280.jpg After riding around town a bit, we grabbed the Guemes Island ferry and did some riding around the island. https://40.media.tumblr.com/6aa36c62...d9ko2_1280.jpghttps://41.media.tumblr.com/d5399055...d9ko5_1280.jpg We also hiked up Guemes Mountain for a great view of the San Juans, but had to leave the bikes at the head of the trail for that part. https://41.media.tumblr.com/0e55ad56...d9ko1_1280.jpg |

Rode from my friend's house late afternoon to Orleans to take the Cape Cod Rail Trail to the northend. Even on a quiet Monday, the CCRT is dangerous. This all happened while heading south from the north termination point. First when notifying a pair of riders that I would be "on your left" to pass, one of them steers right into me. Then two pairs riding towards me fail to stay to the right and fail to notice me, so additinal shout outs. Finally a squirrel darts out to cross in front of me and then doubles back. I'm afraid he didn't make it.

https://dl.dropbox.com/s/2cxw0jlh82f...%20cc.jpg?dl=0 I've almost been taken out by squirrels, partridge, rollerbladers, and once had a pair of Orleans bike cops ride right into me. You were spared large family groups, Boy Scout troops, charity walkers, and non-english speaking Chinese tourists, all of which I encountered on the CCRT Saturday afternoon. BTW, are you joining us Columbus Day weekend? Top |
Hints of autumn in New England. I'm pretty sure that fall is my favorite favorite-season.

Two rides today. First, hiking and biking. While my sweetie hiked up Cadillac Mountain's South Ridge Trail, the Gazelle, which @rootboy described as a wee hoppy animal from Africa and which I'd describe as coldly efficient at going fast, wee hoppied its way up Cadillac and around Acadia's Park Loop Road. A few pics...
On the way up Cadillac, a photo-op overlooking Bar Harbor. That white ship is huge cruise liner. The little blob to the right of the big ship is a 4-masted schooner running excursions out of B.H. The cruise liner sure makes it look small. But then, when viewed from high up enough everything looks small. http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...rBarHarbor.jpg Near the top, waiting for my sweetie who was hiking up the South Ridge Trail. http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics....2015/Gaz1.jpg She made it! http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...OnCadillac.jpg Of course she had to snap a few pics. http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...JimAndBike.jpg After a 10 minute run downhill I continued around the PLR. An obvious photo-op above Eagle Lake. http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...rEagleLake.jpg Just before one tough uphill I saw two bikes pull out into the road 200 yds ahead. They pulled away from me like I was standing still! Hmph. I caught tham at the next overlook. It turns out they were riding electic bikes. We leapfrogged each other the rst of the way around. On the uphills they'd zip by and on the downhills I'd pull away from them. Great fun. C&V content - A friend with them was on a Holdsworth, said he'd bought it in 1988 and it was old then. In his mind the barcons were not vintage at all. http://world.std.com/~muller/pics/Ac...Holdsworth.jpg After my sweetie made it down Cadillac we took the tandem on the carriage road around Eagle Lake. A very pleasnat way to burn off any remaining energy. http://world.std.com/~muller/pics/Ac...mAndTandem.jpg |
It's pretty rural where I like to ride; no convenience stores or shops so I have to carry my own sustenance. But I do come across things like this:
