Rust removal was a combination of oxalic acid and steel wool. The cranks got steel wool because I couldn't get them off and the chrome was already flaking (people here hate steel wool but on real chrome, it can't actually damage it...chrome is physically harder than anything in fine steel wool...just be careful on anything that is not real chrome)

The other stuff was soaked on oxalic acid...there are a lot of threads here you can read on how to do it, many link to a vintage bmx forum thread that I read before starting. Basically, I bought a tub of powdred wood bleach (oxalic acid) from ace hardware. Took out the parts I wanted to remove rust from and washed/degreased them fully since oxalic acid won't work on dirty parts. Then I threw them in a tub of hot tap water and through in a few pinches of the powder (maybe a tablespoon or two worth). Let them sit for a while, pull out and scrub with a scrub brush a little and then let sit overnight. Pull them out in the morning and wash clean (neutralize with baking soda if you want).

I just pulled this out of my neighbours' trash this morning; they're moving and presumably getting rid of old "junk". It's got Modolo "Mach 1" brakes, Stronglight cranks, and Campy deraileurs and downtube shifters.

The RD is missing its pivot bolt, and I'm guessing that's toast. The rest looks okay.

The Campy looks low end to me, but I don't know - I've never had ANY thing Campy before. And the forks have a Columbus sticker, but there's no such Columbus on the main triangle, just a "Made in Italy" sticker. But the thing _does_ feel light.

Any one have any info they can offer me about this bike?

Is this superior to using WD-40 to get under the rust and then scrubbing it off?

I found this today after the garbage truck went by. Somehow they missed it. I know it's garbage because it was and is really messed up, but i've allready repaired and clleaned it. only need seat pole removed.

Sometimes larger metal items wrap around the compactor blade, so, some companies have a policy not to take them. Or, the driver was coming back after work to get it. Either way it was up for grabs.

you also got a nice set of Mafac Racer brakes along w/that Brooks saddle.

Picked up a set of 700c road wheels with Shimano Exage hubs out of the trash earlier this week. Single wall alloy rims and everything seems to be in good condition.

I got this 1993 Cannondale 2.8 for free off of Craigslist. It is in fantastic shape, just a few scratches, but no dents. I have been riding steel for so long I was amazed at how light it was, even missing the rear derailleur and wheels. The handlebars are a bit unuual , but it came with a Rolls saddle.

I wonder if it is worth adding the pieces to finish it and flip it or sell it as is....

You should be able to find a replacement RD on ebay, and after a little bit of work that junk bike will be a beautiful bianchi

Here is the benefit of living in a town with lots of folks with high incomes. A neighbor gave this to me, as he already has a nicer bike and has room for only two bikes, so this makes room for an even nicer bike. It came without a seat or seatpost, and it had everything else. I cleaned it up and tuned it up a bit and added seat and seatpost.

But the fork is really making me scratch my head. As you can see, it's raked way, way forward. I don't know if that was done in some accident, and if it was, what kind of accident would cause that? It makes the handling very strange. This is the only bike I can't ride no-hands, and I can ride no-hands very well. It turns sharply with the slightest movement of the handlebars. Did they make a style of mountain bike like this in the early 90's? What can explain this?

Other than that, the bike seems great. I'm not an offroad rider and don't have much experience with mountain bikes. This one feels right in a way that most other MTB's don't to me. The riding position is good for me, the brakes work well, and the shifters are well integrated on the handlebars.

Whatever is off about it is effictively making it low trail. I can't see it well enough to tell if the trail is bordering on positive (bad) but low or positive trail will make a bike very twitchy since the wheels begins to want to react at the slightest movement.

Here is my Univega Alpina country LX that I recently sold, I think something is wrong with the fork on yours. Could the previous owner bent it that way on purpose, otherwise he may have had an awful landing from a jump.

"Campione D'Italia", it is a midrange model with I believe Columbus Tretubi... I see you're in Ottawa, the last time I was in the Bike Dump (on Catherine Street?) they still had their version in Celeste Green sitting on the rack, asking price
$750 which IMO is way too much... there's another fellow on here who I believe is in Edmonton who had one so maybe do a search on the model for a bit more info. It should have early Syncro indexed shifting which has been widely panned,
I currently ride a bike with Syncro II from about 4 years later and I keep it on friction shift...

In any event, when I sold my Bianchi I wound up getting $425 for it, with Record wheels. A beautiful find!

Wow! Great score! I have those Royal Gran Compe brakes on my old Cannondale. They're first rate. I believe that they were the best you could get if you were going with Suntour/DiaCompe in those days. Can't tell from the picture, but the derailleur looks like it might be a Superbe or a Cyclone II.

The derailleur in the one pic looks like a tri color Shimano 600 to me?,,,,BD
