I bought this Black Lightning from someone in NJ 2 yrs ago. Found out after he parted out the bike and wouldn't give me a deal on the parts. I ended up updating the components and it is very light and rides great for a 35 yr old bike.

So I was out on a ride, near the summit of THE toughest climb around, and my phone starts ringing. It’s my friend with the closed down LBS. Seems he needs to clear out his storage unit ASAP, and so I finish the ride, shower and go over there.

Today’s haul -

A sprawl of stuff …
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8e004e8bd.jpeg
The Bottechia was a thrown-in freebie. The Fuji has a nice Jim Blackburn front rack I have plans for …
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a0a2cd7ea.jpeg
Trashed bottom bracket with stripped crank extractor threads … this may wind up as a parts donor …

Cool, but tiny Bottechia

c.2014 or so Trek 7.3FX hybrid that is just too small for me - but all it needs is cleaning, lube and adjustment

I paid the princely sum of $20 for the Trek 7.3FX; the rest of the bikes were $5 each. Not show are the 7-speed 105/Mavic 192 wheels (destined for my Lighthouse!) and the Specialized-by-Nitto stem, drop bars and aero levers destined for my Trek 850 project!

I spent $40 on old bikes - and another $80 on cables, housing, tubes, rim strips, gloves and other sundries.

Deals like this are a large part of why I'm such a fan of these older bikes: a lot of the time people just want to clear out their crowded basement/garage and will practically give away a nice old bike that, with a little maintenance, could be at least 80% as good as a new one.

This is a mid-eighties Bianchi Sport SS I just snagged for $20. It has a double-butted Ishiwata Magny fork and frame, and Shimano 105 "golden arrow" parts. It's not the most prestigious bike, these are kind of midrange parts, but I couldn't pass up on it for just $20. I'll probably end up donating and then fixing it at the co-op I frequent, as I've already got too many personal projects. I've done this before with a Miyata 610 and Panasonic Touring Deluxe that were too small for me, but I really wanted to refurbish.

And this Windsor Carrera sport I got a couple days ago for $25... I won't really call it a deal, it's in quite poor shape, but I'll make use of the rear derailleur and bar-cons, and I'd like to experiment in the future with painting, so with the lovely lugs I think it would make for an interesting and worth painting "test bike."

Good job you!

I volunteer at a local coop and I find myself rescuing bikes similar to this one. I prefer someone having a bike that I know is solid.

This one looks like a perfect example.

It is a cool old Viscount with the upgraded version of the death fork. Paint work done by Crayola and is a different kind of paint design.

Cool paint scheme by what looks like Crayola.

Upgraded death fork with the reinforced solid aluminum connection and pinned.

The real reason I grabbed it. The crank and Bottom bracket that some folks might find interesting for a build.
Smiles, MH

I saw a bike a few days ago with a very similar paint job except it was on all the components. It was locked to a bike rack and the derailer was broken and one of the tires was flat so I' been guessing abandoned possibly. It was an aluminum hybrid that was a fairly newer model.

grant40 02-05-25 08:05 PM

This one I rescued from 2 years ago almost so not recent. I wanted to share this cannondale I got for free from the local co-op as it also has an interesting paint job. I got it as just a frame set.

I worked at a shop that would do such fork replacement. We always offered a Tange #2 Cro-moly fork. I thought that was fair.

And, it works!

I'd win some points at my local bike coop for that tape. It has me thinking I could use various yarns and go all out. Inspiration for another project.

Thrift store find. 1997 Gary Fisher Paragon, their 2nd from the top hard tail that year. All original but for the ridiculous bars, stem, pedals and saddle. Missing the bar ends that were oh so popular those days. My size, too!

Don’t know what to do with it beyond installing a nice flat bar, longer, lower stem (for that proper bum up NORBA racer position),some sweet bar ends and a better saddle. Basically reverse the changes that were made to it.

I went out for vape juice, and came home with a Surly Cross Check with a bunch of nice parts for $300. Has Paul cantilevers SRAM red full group Cinelli stem and bars etc.

I agree, but that bike was NOT found at a dump and/or picked up for free.

People are straying off the post requirement.

PilotFishBob 02-17-25 08:46 AM

No requirement for bikes be picked up for free, at least from reading the originating post. Just "screamin good deals, and the bikes you've saved from the compactor." I think it's legit.

So you speak for everyone now? I pretty much cannot think of a single bike that I posted on this thread that I got for free or picked out of a dump. I guess I should go delete them all right? $300 for a bike that goes for about 1200 to 1500 used is close enough to free for me. Also I have been a member of this website and pretty much only this page of it for 4 years before this thread was ever started.

milesfromhome 03-01-25 12:54 PM

Well this is a true trash find, left in the lightly travelled alley with a "free" sign stuck in the spokes. Looks super comfy but a hair big for me and too small for everyone else in the house, probably going to the co-op next week. A (70s I assume?) Sears Ted Williams five speed with shimano eagle drivetrain and serial number HCO548869.

So-weet! I love what I call a "gentlemen's tourer." No need for bags, just a nice cruiser for the day.
