It looks a little rough, but it might not need as much stuff replaced as you think. If you are thinking replacement anyway, you could try using oxalic acid to get the rust off the chainrings etc and see where that gets you.

I don't know if this qualifies as a "catch", but I came across this Moto Mirage yesterday.
There's mininmal rust on the frame. The brakes/levers, headset and BB seem to be ok, the chainrings, derailleurs, pedals are shot. Think it's worth building it back up? It's a bit heavy for sure, but maybe as a SS/FG it won't be so bad. Based on all the catalogs I could find online, and random pics of other Motos, this would have to be a pre-73 model. Beyond that I have no clue. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=150884http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=150887http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=150886http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=150885http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=150883http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=150882 |

Easy "C&V" rehab (Nashbar and Niagara have the parts & supplies for it at great prices), but OMG....the "F-bomb" (fixie)? I hate to see a bike go to waste. I'm headed to the best bike store in the DC area later today to see if I can piece something ridable together for minimal cost (spindle, wheels, cranks, tubes and tires), I'll do it, otherwise I'll clean it and sell it on CL. I have too many bikes in the basement. |

I've already removed most of the rust/oxidation from the forks and headset, the paint is in decent shape, but it's stained (probably stored outside for quite some time). Most of the surface rust could be removed, but the cranks are cottered, and not very special.
Thanks, I'm still trying to decide what to do with it. (You'll note that I did not refer to the conversion as a "fixie") I don't feel much responsibility to restore a hi-ten bike to it's original glory. Once I remove the cottered cranks, the frozen rear derailleur, spending the money to have a(nother) geared bike doesn't seem to make much sense. I hate to see a bike go to waste. I bought this 1983 Trek 620 this morning at a yard sale down the road for $50
. Came with the handlebar bag, pump, rack, panniers.... and.... Trek owners manual. . (No seat though, I added that just to take it for a quick spin as soon as I got home.) . http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3546/...3cf19a1483.jpg . http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3341/...c8775038a7.jpg . |

That's right up the street from my house. I stop in there every week to see what's available. I looked at that exact bike. passed up an old Puch about a month ago. |
Well done dgodave. :)

I saved a Nishiki Continental! I don't know how "vintage" these are but definitely a fun project bike.
Some pics tonight :D |
I came home and this was leaning against my shed when I got home. I think my bike bud dropped it off, with abit of cleaning it would look brand new, it has mint condition 28" tires and rims

Scored some Peugeot fenders for my UO8 project today... and the aluminium with black stripes are what a copper coloured bike would have come fitted with.
Will need to track down those damn Peugeot fittings now. But free fenders are free fenders. Now... to find one of these Huret suicide shifters. Image taken from http://davesbikeblog.blogspot.com/20...-shifters.html http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_SZx2oaxuJS...0/SShuret1.jpg |

Overpaid, but picked up this tiny Schwinn Sprint from the Salvation army for my little sister. $35 its really clean, 1970's i believe and shifts through all gears, tires held air. Brakes are fine. I towed it home tonight after traffic died down with my track bike with no brakes a ****load of heavy groceries in my bag and BMX Platform pedals. Going downhill was interesting to say the least, and towing uphill was sloooowww. I Love it. It has 24" tires on it.

Despite having far too many irons in the fire, i picked these up over the last week or so.
first, a schwinn cruiser w/ a MTB fork and red stripe coaster brake hub...for parts for a cruiser build.. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...-green-300.jpg a Bianchi from its original owner....made in Italy, well-worn Suntour Cyclone group with replacement Shimano 7 speed freewheel.. (which is slightly taller than I usually ride, but tolerable...though i would be interested in trading for a 55/56cm if anyone here is game) http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...veside-web.jpg and "Columbus Formula Two" tubing...what's that? http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...f2-tag-700.jpg A Raleigh Sprite. Seat and bars are in a funky configuration, but with adjusting should be a cool ride http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...drfront600.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...iveside700.jpg And, for my son, a Raleigh Space Rider, 3 speed 24" wheel bike with coaster brake... http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...-driveside.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...ndriveside.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...chainguard.jpg and, a pair of front/rear Jim Blackburn racks...can anyone ID what these are and how they're used? (i assume the tubing is a special pannier mount deal??) http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...n-rearrack.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...-frontrack.jpg |

Yes, Eclipse had that slotted ,,dovetail pannier mounting. Possibly Kirkland used something similar. They were rather high end bags. Chris

Good deals seem to be falling from the sky lately ... a Trek 614, a Miyata Nimbus, a Miyata 610, and this afternoon - this Fuji Special Racer c. 1975...
It has a Suntour V-GT-Luxe and a Compe-5 Derailleur, Nitto stem and bars, Ukai alloy rims, forged chromed double eyelet dropouts, etc, etc. -But beyond the quality of the components, there is something about this HIGH TEN frame that speaks to me. http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...oadRacer1a.jpg |
2 Attachment(s)
The neighborhood we live in has an annual community-wide garage sale, has had it for years. In fact that's how we first found the neighborhood 21 years ago and decided we wanted to look for a house here. We have both bought and sold things at the sales over the years, but today was the first time I went out specifically looking for bikes.
To keep it quick I rode my son's Specialized Hardrock. I did not find a vintage lightweight for myself, but for $30 found another HardRock, which will get cleaned up and either go to the neighbor's 14 y o son, or get flipped on CL. I sold a similar one for $100, so this could finally put some money into the Bike Fund. Attachment 151102 Having finished the neighborhood I stopped to talk with a guy who was loading a couple of bikes into a pickup truck. He was a flipper and had found a Raleigh LTD-3 which he offered to me for $50 (meaning he probably paid $10). I said no thanks, reflecting that if he had not scored a Mercian for $50 then no one had. I took one more turn down an alley I'd already checked, and in a small garage, under a blanket, something dark metallic green caught my eye: Attachment 151101 Raleigh Sports, Ladies, with a cracked but I think usable Brooks, one replaced pedal. At $15 I could hardly say no, could I? Seller was the original owner, who had bought it through the American Youth Hostel Association through some deal they had years ago. I should have asked her if she still had anything like an owners' manual or pump, though I doubt it. My wife and teen kids were off at an Ultimate Frisbee match, and they just now came home. As I expected, it was love at first sight for daughter and Raleigh. She likes anything old and funky, and I knew a Sports would be right up her alley. All in all a very satisfying morning! Now...maybe a nice long ride for myself? |
I finally caught my out of control hops crop! Whew, I knew I was saving wheels for a reason :)

I really like that crankset...i'd say it's not "awesome" but it looks very cool on the upright/townie type bike i put it on..
