(I do agree these are pretty nice bikes - but a Super Course? Really?)

Cottered steel crank set? Straight gauge Reynolds 531 probably tops the Hi-Ten, though.

IMHO, the Ukai rims and Sunshine hubs are excellent for that range of bike.

Funny thing is, Eugene Sloane in The New Complete Book of Bicycles (1974

edition) mentions both bikes in his listing of "Moderate-Cost, Good Quality Derailleur

Bicycles". Sounds like coin tossing time to me. :innocent:

Yeah, but
"These (Super Courses) are quite nice bikes, often suitable for upgrading to modern parts." - Sheldon Brown.

To his point, mine have all been upgraded to varying extents.
I must confess though, that the best shifting one happens to have the same DR as this Fuji Special Racer, and (like my SC's), the Fuji seems to have a special character of its own.

I am worried that I will not want to sell this Fuji when I get done with it... It's getting really hard to decide how to thin the herd these days, because (despite my extreme frugality), I'm getting stuck with too many nice bikes.

I also have an 18-speed S-12-S (S-18-S, right?), and I put about 40 to 50 miles on it today. Rides nicely.

HSean 05-16-10 06:31 PM

I picked this up today. I noticed it was repainted. looks like it was blue before the paintjob/ the question is what is this? it's very light and the rear rim is a glue on type. the headset is campy and dropouts are suntour.
Heres some pics. I love the crank is hased! why would then put that crappy derailer on it? the frame mount is hidden behind it

HSean: Looks like someone was in the process of doing some horrible hack job on it and eventually gave up. Not sure what it is, I smell french though (probably due to the crankset and the centerpull).. looks like a worthy save!

HSean 05-16-10 07:35 PM

The guy said he removed parts and used it on a trainer, WHY! why did he put craptastic parts and throw the rest out?!

fiataccompli 05-16-10 07:48 PM

dunno...i had a bike i set up for a trainer & i ran stem shifters with solid cable back to the original low end shimano RD...ultimately it was a bit of a hack and then I ended up selling the bare frame to a friend. A trainer is a great place to use the extra cheap parts you have laying around, imho....i just found out rather quickly that i'd rather ride for real in 30 degrees than sit on the trainer and pedal mindlessly in shorts.

HSean 05-16-10 08:03 PM

My trainer is now a bike stand, I took the friction wheel off it. also another clue that might help see what this frame is that it looks like it has BCM stammped onto it's lugs on headtube. not sure how old it is looks like maybe 70's 80's?

sonatageek 05-16-10 08:40 PM

Finally took some pictures of some of the bikes I have picked up over the past few weeks. Nothing super special, but everyone has its good points.

First up is a 1994 Bridgestone XO-5. The low end of the XO series, but still cromoly main frame and fork. As a bonus, the past owner set it up with drop bars using a Nitto Technomic stem.

Next up is a soon to be flipped Giant Rincon in nice shape with a new saddle and a new set of tires installed by the last owner.

Next an early Schwinn Mirada mixte. It uses standard 26" mountain tires and has a huge amount of tire clearance. I am thinking of building it up with a set of Schwalbe Fat Frank tires (perhaps in creme). It also has a nice Blackburn rack installed.

Next a Fuji project bike that went astray for the past owner. Horrible over spray paint job and nothing really done to completion. On the plus side, Shimano 600 down tube shifters, derailleurs and cranks. The front rim is a Mavic MA40. It also has a Cinelli stem and handle bars.

Finally, a KHS mixte that was snagged as a freebie from behind one of my favorite bike shops. I threw a set of steel wheels on it for the picture and for a quick test ride. It has a cottered Shimano FFS crankset. I am planning on putting alloy wheels on it, swapping in a standard bottom bracket and 3 piece alloy crankset and some northroad bars.

Picked up a mint Rolls saddle at the flea market today for $30. Oh yeah it had a Fuji Del Rey attached to it too :) I have to say this saddle might top my brooks pro in both style and comfort (time will tell though that was just after test ride around the block).

Fibber 05-16-10 09:08 PM

Yesterday's find at a town-wide celebration and yard sale (Wappingers Falls, NY) was a 1983 Gatane GranSport. Grimy, but under the black stuff a nice bike in very good (pretty much rust free) shape. 12 speed, Mavic 700c wheels, Simplex derailleurs, Stronglight cranks. After cleaning it up a bit I rode it today for fun.

I saw it earlier in the day, but the gunk was a turnoff. Must have hid it's beauty to a lot of folks, as the dirt cheap asking price of $25 wasn't low enough for it to move. I was parked nearby, so towards the end of the day I walked by and offered $5. At first he said no, and then when I turned to leave he said yes! Yes, I will get some pics up.

Also, last week I bought a new in box Stewart Warner speedometer for a 27" bike. Paperwork says 1974. Not sure why, but for a $1, I couldn't walk away.

Probably not French if it has SunTour dropouts. But it does appear to have Bocama lugs. A true Frankenbike.

Ha! Sweet! Or should I say bitter? ;)

Sonatageek;

The Fuji looks really nice excepting that bent fork.....

sonatageek 05-17-10 04:15 AM

For the $20 the bike cost, I was really looking at it as a parts donor and not a whole bike.

I love those SR cranksets there one way to knock a bunch of weight off of steel cottered cranks and if anybody has one in good shape they don't want contact me.

WOW - a blue, Canadian DL-1 with chrome fenders - now that's something (for a Yank, anyway).

It's a 1972 from the sturmey rear hub. It rides very nice though, I think it's the best riding bike i've ever owned.

Really bent fork... this one is easy to see.

Am pretty sure HSean's Raleigh has had it's fenders replaced... mounts are not typical to any Raleigh of this type and would better a dollar it came with white fenders originally.

But they look nice.

I'm equally sure they're original. Mountings are typical Raleigh adjustable rod stays for the DL-1, the pattern is the same, and the knurling is omitted right where you'd expect the front rod brakes to go.

P.S.: A photograph of Raleigh rod stay eyelets:

kurt ... I was thinking of the Sports mounting... should never post before my second cup of coffee after a night of very little sleep.

Still thinking those fenders are after market to the bike and don't look like Raleigh fenders... also thinking blue fenders with white tails would have been more probable.

HSean 05-17-10 11:30 AM

But they must be Raleigh! unless somebody put this on them to make them look Raleigh?

Picke up two Schwinns from two different decades, two different models, two days apart. Both are thrift store finds for $60 each. The Breeze looks all original parts!

The '90 LeTour. Double butted CroMo frame and fork. I'll have to get rid of the saddle and stem...
