I have a bike shop nearby that loves to give away bike boxs and I can ship bikes pretty well. perhaps we can do some trading sometime. I really had no idea it would break $100 and was surprised myself.....again all it did was fuel this stupid bike addiction I have going. I guess it could be worse, I could be a crack head.....this is much more fun I think.

I just love bikes and like to work on them and make them pretty, I had no idea there was the kind of market for them as I have found out here. im looking forward to garage sales this spring as I do my best work garage saleing. It amazes me what I have bought for $10 at a garage sale.

Most definitely not vintage, but I got this Jan Ulrich aluminium frame on ePray for €66, in my town too. It´s my size so I´ll build it up into a summer ´best´bike, or sell it in the warmer months.
Apparently it´s signed by the man himself.

I picked up this Signature Series Ross 292s today. I'm excited about the full Shimano (105?) Golden Arrow Group that it has. It needs a good cleaning, and some attention to light rust but I think it's going to polish up very well.

It's the law, for sure, but while it may not be very cool, it IS useful and less brutish than shouting at people to make way - hey, just trying to be a gentleman, here, y'know.

Personally, I love having a bell on a city bike, weather or not the law demands that I have one. I use 'em to "bring" back and forth with my friends while out on cruiser rides.

I may be very irritating to passer by with all my brringgg-ing!

Is a Dunelt bike frame worth anything??
 

I was at the drug store today next door to the Trek & Salsa Bike dealer in town and there in his pile of junk bikes next to the dumpster (most are dept store junk) Is a Gold Colored DUNELT Mens bike frame with the fork and a front fender and brake attached. The running gear was removed completely . The frame is faded, scratched and dirty as well as having the watchdog ID # engraved in nasty scratchings rith across the top tube. The decals are still readable, Dunelt, made in england "ride a wheel on Sheffield steel" It has a ding on one of the rear tubes but Its not terrible and repairable if Im going to paint it anyway. Very nice lug work and air pump braze ons. I have all the parts from a girls formost 3 spd I dissassembles for parts. I think it was made by Raliegh so the parts should mix and match. Some nice fenders, but they are blue. Some super nice Dunlop steel rims w/turmey archer 3 spd hub in near mint shape. I wish the paint on this old tub wasnt so harshed up. I think it would make a neat commuter.

Let me ask though, Is this frame rare at all or desired by anyone here before I decide to have it blasted and painted? I did a search on eBay and did not see anything like it at all there.

Ill get a pic for it, I all ready removed the fork as It was all dried up and barely turnable. Gonna give it a clean up and get the fork back on it and go from there.

Let me know if any of you have any info on this bike or have any interest.

Here are two original Magazines that I got for 5. One is from June 1970 and the other from Nov-Dec 1972. Both have many pics of Merckx and varies other top pro racers. Also, there are advertisments for Campagnolo, stronglight, simplex and other brands. The 1972 one has many color pics of Merckx.

Man - I've been jealously watching this thread hoping to one day post. Then....

Today I dropped by my local second hand junk shop. It's 3 minutes to closing, so when the clerk asks if she can help me, I ask to see what they have for bikes. There's a crappy dept. store mt. bike with a sold sticker, and a couple of 12" kids bikes. Then she says, there's a free to take away one out back too.

I walk around, and see it... "I can make this work I say, glad to haul it away"..."Thanks - have a nice day".

Needs new rubber, truing, and a front derailer adjustment.
May be more bits upon closer inspection, but otherwise seems solid.

Oh and it's covered in sticky substance, maybe tree pitch. Scrubs off with a bit of effort. I bet this cleans up real nice.

Well, oxalic acid does a really great job of getting rid of rust. I used it recently on some badly rusted chrome parts from a 60's era Schwinn middle weight and it was pretty amazing. Before the acid bath the stuff pretty much looked like scrap.

You have to be careful with Naval Jelly though (sorry if this is off topic), but we use it a lot in my refurbishment shop and while it does a great job on rust, there's a down side. If the rust has gone beneath the level plane of the surface of the object, it'll eat the rust down past it. You'll get some gnarly pitting with it.

I'm planning on looking at a late 50s Hercules tonight. I met the original owner a few days ago and he offered to sell it to me; it's been sitting around since he got his license in the early 60s. Wish me luck.

Got no pics, but I found an old MTB on craigslist this summer.

Old enough to be pre-mountain bike specific parts- Sugino super maxy TA-knock off cranks. Nitto riser bars and pearl stem. Dia-compe cantis- the really pretty ones. Original wheels with 1.75" rims. A freaking hite-rite and a frame made out of Tange champion motorcross tubing. Rides great.

Cost $40. The kid who sold it to me talked himself down from $50 because the tires were flat.

That's a nice rig right there, and looks to be all original.

I rode and raced one of those for a few years. It was awesomely fast, light and stiff. That bike would make a wicked fully rigid smooth trail/road machine. I'd suggest putting some wicked fast XC tires on it and destroying the easy trails.

I broke mine, and Specialized sent me a replacement, but by the time it arrived I had replaced it with a Kona Hot - the perfect BC bike. The replacement M2 went to a weight weenie buddy.

Maybe I should throw these back, but here they are. I get 'em both for $20 total.

I went to look at a Hercules that I heard about, hoping it was an English roadster or sports bike along the lines of my Raleigh DL-1. It was used years back to deliver newspapers; the original owner is now just about ready to retire. It turned out to be more of a cruiser type bike. It's Birmingham-made, so just before the Raleigh takeover I guess. It has a Sturmey-Archer AW 3-speed hub with a 60 4 date code. The chain is missing and a spare chain I have laying around from an 80s road bike doesn't fit. Dang it.

The guy also had his daughter's bike, a Sears 5-speed with a twist. As far as I can tell, there is a 5-speed Shimano Lark derailleur, but there also seems to be a two-speed internally geared hub that is activated by centrifugal force inside the hub.

I think the top number, 503473590, is the serial number since the bottom number appears to be stamped in after painting; probably a registration number (7-digits... maybe a phone number?)

Both bikes are 20" frames, adolescent-sized really, so these bikes are clearly not suited to my 6'-2" frame and will probably be tough to flip. My wife is adamantly anti-bike for various reasons, but I may see if I can get her on the Sears ladies' bike. I would love it if should would ride with me once in a while, and out of the two bikes, this is by far both the more interesting and the more intact. With a few adjustments it will be fully functional without putting any money into it.
