just need to find a donor bike for it now. it's got weird "u-brakes" in the rear which i will have to find

I've had a few of these now and can tell you without a doubt they are nice nice nice. Only thing lacking is a 3rd bottle mount and low rider brazeons.
Both mine came with the cooler than U-brake rollercams. A little (not much) more difficult to set up, but they give phenomenal power when done correctly. Mine also came with a super neat Nitto quill stem with a clamp on extension, much like today's threadless stems. Very cool feature, and I've been looking for some time now for another, to no avail. Mine were both built with Tange MTB double butted tubing; the larger one (20" seat tube) had two bottle braze-ons on top of the down tube, the smaller one (18"seat tube) had one on both down and seat tubes. I took my larger one to a local guy and had him add two bottles (one under the down tube, one on the seat tube, for a total of 4) and relocate the brake posts to the seatstays. Sadly, he did a hack job and ruined the frame. So now it sits on my basement wall.

Edit: Meant to say that they lack dual eyelets on the dropouts F&R, not lowrider mounts.

and i plan on making it in into some kind of city cruiser hybrid.. might put drop bars on, not sure what kind of handle bars i will use

New to this "vintage thing", I just finished an old Trek with a "chain hanger", what is it for? Dumb questions,, to hang a chain??

Why, It is special? The old Trek was according to the bike shop, a "special order bike" when new.

^ those are actually the kind of tires i was thinking about putting on the diamond back

and the chain hanger is for hanging the chain yo.. i guess to keep it off the chain stay

frantik 04-27-11 01:20 AM

it's also got mounts for racks and fenders on the front and back.. the front has weird braze ons on the side of the fork

Theres a junk yard in town that Ive got a few things from. I got a pair of 700c wheels. 9 speed cassette, shimano hubs, 24 bladed spokes on deep v black alloy rims. was going to get tyres and put them on the Rossin I got a few weeks ago. Wheels were £1. I got a mtb disc front wheel at the same time. so 33 pence a wheel. :)

I was up at the junk yard yesterday. I found a GT LTS2 frame, swingarm, shock, headset cartridges and XT mech. all a bit corroded. I left it at the side, as I found this Univega. Univega Alpina. I think its from mid 90s. Shimano xt rear mech. LX cantilevers. DX levers. The man in the office said put £1 in the charity box. I put all my coins in there. about 73 pence. Bike is my size. Ive got a pair of exage hubs Im going to build up. so might use this. I had originally wanted it for parts tho.

I had my Xmas bike. a bike I had found in the woods, then put in police lost property.

Its an Apollo FS26. Low end bike from a chain store, I used to work for. Its ok. I strapped the univega frame to my rucksack and biked home 10 miles. pedal was sticking in my neck, so my heads like that today

Alexw35,

That was a pretty decent bike, and still is if it is in good condition. You can get more information on it from Bikepedia. You can search around the listings for Univega Alpinas until you locate yours.

I picked this up, and it's in pretty nice nice shape with only a couple nicks in the paint. Looks like it has all of the original parts.

that a prelude? what gruppo?

Roger M 04-28-11 09:22 PM

It looks like an 87 Prelude, according to the catalog scan here

http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1...0/1987_06.html

It has indexed Shimano light action derailleurs with Dia Compe brakes

Some bikes may just be too far gone to restore. I've got to stop going to my local dump. The bikes seem to follow me home like stray cats. The Shimano LX drivetrain pried the $10 out of my wallet. It's too small for me, but I'm going to give it a shot. (This is basically my shop BTW, I believe in working in fresh air when possible.)

That's the only reason she lets me keep it in the house! :roflmao2:

The Schwinn behind it found a new home Saturday! Thank goodness!
I had a Schwinn Avenue and major wheel problems. They offered this
one as a replacement and I took it. A 25lb truck! You didn't ride it, you
herded it!

It is... lucky. I want a 25" Prelude from that year. It lists the same 72.5 angles as the 1986 Traveler I have, and I'm hoping it has the same short top tube (~57cm).

looks better than the biscayne mtb i dragged home for $10 today.. i was hoping some of the stuf would be decent quality but the only thing worth keeping is the wheelset, though finding an older wheelset which matches my 85 diamondback's rear stays was worth the $10.. and hopefully I can sell the heavy steel riser bars to some fixie person

Less than an hour after getting the MTB it was totally stripped to the frame, and less than 30 minutes after I left the bare frame outside, it was gone

If you do a search on ebay I saw a Scotts front fork on there the other day when searching for a rear shock, I don't remember the price but I thought it looked cool.

My Boss picked this up for me last week as a trade in as he knew I would like it & I did. It's a 1996 Jamis Dakar 19" frame 8 speed XT derailleurs Mavic rims double wall with eyelets, Deore LX Parallax hubs, White Ind Crankset, Onza canti's and Avid 2.0 levers, Noleen NR Rear shock (needs a rebuild) Rock Shox Judy XC (Needs a service) and a Thomson seat post. Overall the bike itself wasn't in bad shape and it still has the original Onza Rip tires on it that aren't bad.
The shocks is where it will need some work the rear leaked all the oil out, I refilled it but the seals are gone Noleen can still rebuild it for $100 but I don't know if I want to go that route or not. The front fork is sticking and I have yet to take it apart but I already have a newer Judy C that I can replace it with if need be. The paint took some heavy scratches on the top tube but the rest isn't that bad, it has a lot of metalic in it and looks great in the sun.

I just picked up a free Peugeot yesterday. If my decidedly unexpert eyes don't deceive me, it's a U08 from somewhere in the early 70s.

Beautiful blue paint job, apparently infamous textured steel wheels, beat up original Ideale saddle. Would make a great project touring bike, but it's a 56 and I'd want a 58. Trying to decide if I should just flip it... only needs new tubes, a new rear tire, lots of oil/grease, maybe a new chain, and some new brake housing.

Above is a Chicago Built Schwinn Varsity I found at a roadside fruit and vegetable stand. I bought a watermelon and some tomatoes, talked to the owner and got the bike for free. Forgot to take a picture before I disassembled it.

Here is the final out come, except that the seatpost is now shinny and I've added some bar tape.

Pearl iZumi Enduro II shoes NEW in box at Performance bike tent sale. $10.00!
This may be a GA only sale. Had great prices on some discontinued bibs but none in my size. :(

May go back and buy the Shimano Road shoes tomorrow (same price) so I can put these Look peddles I took off a flip on my R300.

Those Onza brakes are nifty, but beware. They tend to crack if you overtighten the pinch bolt that secures the pad carrier to the arm. Of course, if you don't tighten them down, your pads will rotate, ruining your toe-in adjustment and causing various degrees of frustration. I speak from experience.

Cool bike, though. Jamis always were cool and seems to deliver more value per dollar than, say, Specialized.

divineAndbright 04-30-11 11:45 AM

One of the nicer rides ive pulled out of the trash, velo sport prestige, beautiful champagne color with marroon decal. Sadly too small for me, but looks like it originally came with an arabesque 600 group but some stuff was changed like the stem (black specialized), arx rear derailleur, front wheel looks like it was pulled from a miele with a 32h 105 front hub, has an interesting and nice looking fluted miche chainset which ive never seen before, sadly one of the 105 aero pedals seem like its stuck/corroded in the arm.

Roger M 04-30-11 12:09 PM

Not really C&V, but will probably help in wrenching on my junk. I've been looking for a cheap stand for a while, and I finally got one for cheap. It's an older model, but it is like new. I like that it extends upwards a lot. Most of the stands that I've seen in person are not as tall.

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/f...t/IMG_4932.jpg

I still like the cradle on my old stand better(for ease of hanging the bike), but the adjust-ability of the Park stand will be nice.
