This bike was chained at a corner I walk/ride by every day for months, which made me sad cause I thought it looks very nice, so I finally left the owner a note saying I'd give him 50€ for it and he accepted. I don't think the bike is anything special (as far as I can tell it's probably from the early 80s) and it's certainly no mountain goat, but it was in really good condition considering it had been exposed to rain and snow etc all winter long and it has some really neat features, like the integrated lock (which I'm sure would baffle a thief for a moment) and I almost removed the fenders until I noticed that the cable from the dynamo to the back light is routed through the inside of the frame and I thought I would never be able to reproduce that; and it looks stylish anyway. ;)

I only had to replace a shift cable and the chain and center the rear wheel a little, everything else works fine and I think even the tires are still original (at least the company that made them was liquidated a decade ago).

Thanks. I'll look forward to seeing pictures of your silver one. I did a light cleanup on it, and took it for a ride last night. It's a nice piece.

BTW, this is the bike that came with the GT. It's a mid 80s Shwinn Mesarunner. It also is in very good/excellent shape. Sad thing is, it's not worth much, and I can't seem to give it away to any friends(My daughter's schoolfriend moms like the shiny new dept store bikes better). I may strip it for the parts.

I bought it just because I was already out there to buy the GT, and the price.. $5

Roger, that did clean up well for a cursory scrub-down. Love that blue color. I'll get pics up when I get mine. May be a little while. Trading a friend my old JD lawnmower than needs more work than I want to deal with. He no longer is into the bike and wants something else to tinker with. I don't have the time or desire to putz with the mower, so it works out great for both of us. The Moto will take up much less room in the garage too :)

I did a quick flip on a Fuji Monterey that was very similar to the schwinn, needed new cables, and shimano 105 index shifters were gummed up. Afternoon of work and I sold it for 30$ profit.

One of my really good friends has this same bike as his main and only ride! He got it at he local co-op for 80$, and rides it all the time.

Yep, me too. I have been pretty lucky in most of these bikes in the last bunch of weeks... and it happened again tonight. I told my wife that I was done buying projects for a while, and then another bike popped up. This has been up for three days. I can't believe anyone didn't jump on it. I saw it yesterday, but tried to hold back.

EDIT: The seller has now removed the bike from his ad. This is what it said

"ironman bike has new tubes and tires, new seat and peddles "
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...cewize/336.jpg

Well, tonight it was still there so I called the guy and asked for a price. It was only 10 miles away, so I hooked up the trailer and met up with him. After seeing it, I offered $5 less than the asking price and he was glad to see it go away.

BTW, towing with a 10 speed sucks(at least where I live). My wife still thinks I just went for a ride(doesn't know I packed home another pile).

Yep, it looks like a nice bike. I haven't ridden it yet, being that it's small for me.

frantik 05-04-11 10:23 PM

oh damn.. i love that color on that iron man.. i need one to match my Apex  what year is that one? the 2nd number of the serial# is the year.. ie if it says 8 it's an 88. is it a master or expert?

Roger M 05-04-11 10:42 PM

It's an 88 expert. The main appeal of it for me was the parts. If you scroll back through this thread a couple of months, I picked up a free Ironman, with a mismatched set of wheels. It's in much nicer shape than this(did I mention stuck seat post). I'll go through this and swap out a few parts, and then sell it.

frantik 05-04-11 10:48 PM

cool i will have to be on the look out for one.. the 89 ironman i have is also a little beat up.. if i could find a clean one in that color i would be very happy

$7 at the local thrift, no cleats but otherwise great. Snagged a quick $40 on the ebay.

Did well the past few days. Scored a 56cm International w/ Campy HS, Older Cannondale w/ plaid parts, 80's Schwinn Sierra, Trek 930 and Trek 820 frame.

Aluminum Easton aero profile tubing and custom made in Colorado. Fairly aggressive geometry and 56cm. Less than 1000 miles on it. Just has shop wear. It needs to go. It's about a 2001 model, and the frameset was purchased new by the original owner.

if it wasn't for the hideous (though era-common) flat downtube I woulda been all over that if I needed something!

Whats the black and yellow thing beside it? looks like an old cannondale; Big tubes + top tube cable guides!

It's really not hideous. The yellow/black is a Cannondale frame.

urodacus 05-05-11 08:03 PM

thanks for the information. no wonder i've never seen one.

My latest score.
Picked up this Scott M-16 Vantage at the dump recycling center for a whopping $5.00.
Overhauled with tires I'm into it for about $75. :)

Man! This took some elbow grease. But, I managed to turn this $7 dump find into, what I'd consider, a reliable bike ride. The frame took a lot of work, but the wheels were an absolute grind. Shifts & brakes nicely. Hubs & BB reconditioned and adjusted well. The only thing I added was a decent chain I had and replaced the broken FD with one I found on donor bike. After this, I'm wondering why any bike 'has' to go to the dump.

well i think some bikes should go to the dump (well, recycler) but the better ones should definitely be given new life

people are just used to throwing things out when they break. everything today is just a consumable.. I mean on ipods and iphones there isn't even an easy way to replace the battery!

just picked this up for $80

I am selling my road bike because I do not use it. It is a Schwinn 21" frame. 12 speed. It has new paint (3 color, color change paint), new brake pads, new brake cables, rear derailer cable, new tires and tubes, new corck handle bar wrap, and all bearings are greased with synthetic grease. Shimano 600 components. It just needs a front derailer and cable to be complete (about $30)- I never got around to installing it as I only road it 2 times before I decided that I would just stick to mountain bikes. And the rear wheel needs to be straightened. The extras: 2 tubes, 1 front wheel (bare), 1 rear wheel (with everything). All the new parts are over $100. I'm just looking to recoupe some of the money I put into this. So shoot me an offer.
wish he handn't painted it.. at least he had sense to leave the tubing sticker, but not enough sense to paint around the sticker right! other than that the paint job isnt too bad. i might just mask off the unpainted section and paint it black or something

the main thing that i'm excited about though are the shimano 600 EX brake calipers and shimano 600 EX aero style levers. I didn't even know they made EX aero style levers, but i wanted to put them on my ironman build. it also came with shimano 600 hubs so those will go on my bike too lol. weirdly it has shimano 105 shift levers.

the other wheelset looks pretty pimp and worth the $80 alone!

OK, you win. Your dump is definitely better then my dump.:notamused:

realestvin7 05-05-11 11:26 PM

I won't lie. That paint color is pretty dang awesome. Lmao.

frantik 05-05-11 11:29 PM

yeah if he had just painted around the sticker it woudn't look too bad. it needs a clear coat though.. it's just a cheap paint job from an autobody place i think, it's already got nicks and scratches in it. the bare steel needs some kind of protectant to keep it from rusting too

edit:

based on the gruppo and year, it seems to be an 1987 Super Sport. With biopace chainrings too! I didn't notice that until i was looking at the catalog. they are pretty chewed up though so i might not use them. It was pink and white before Realestvin! pure Miami Vice!

the other wheelset is Mavic CXP-22 laced to shimano 105 hubs.. pretty happy with this score overall :D

Chris_in_Miami 05-06-11 05:52 AM

Bummer that the pink & white paint scheme is gone, that's one of my favorites. The new paint is pretty rad though...

Amesja 05-06-11 06:10 AM

No bike should go to a dump. Never.

Some of them should go to a proper bike recycling facility and be stripped of decent parts/wheels/components -but never just taken to a dump. Even a department store BSO might have a couple decent parts on it. Recently I've been collecting a few wheels to disassemble carefully in order to teach a small wheel-building class.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle -in fact, NOTHING should go to a dump. We are burying, with great expense, resources that our descendent's will wish they had. I guess at the very least they will know where to dig...
