Yes, Columbus "Gamma" tubing with "Inexternal" lugs. After looking it over, it's really in good shape. Newer tires, bar wrap and seat in good condition. I'll probably only need to regrease all the bearings, adjust the derailleurs and clean off a bit of grime and it should be good to go.

In a hurry to get out to the cottage last weekend, I almost missed this old Trek that had been tossed away in a metal bin at the local landfill site...

Hi, picked this up recently, the badge says Peerless and I'm told it's from the 1940's...any idea what it's worth, really have no use for it. Thanks for looking.

1984 Specialized Rockhopper by (cobrabyte), on Flickr

I picked up what I thought was an early 80's rockhopper to flip a couple weeks ago, It has the same brakes and frame coloring as yours, but it has indexed clicker shifters under the handle bar, a plastic dork dish rather than a pie plate like that one, and I think the bar and stem are black rather than chrome. That must put mine at a few years newer than yours, I haven't done any looking at the serial numbers or anything yet. Pretty cool!

Got this Cannondale last night and snapped this pic before taking it inside.

Yeah, these early MTB's evelved quickly from year to year. The guy I bought it from bought it new in '84 and says it was the first Rockhopper model. Yours is probably a year or two later. You should post a pic of yours for comparisons :)

Today's catch... half price week at the local thrift, paid $32. Schwinn World Sport, womens. Hub dates say '86. Nice lugged cro-mo frame, nice paint. Joytech hubs, no maker's mark on the alloy rims, 27". Shimano Light Action drivetrain with the shifters on the stem. Sekae cranks, knobbies that will ride but should be replaced. Had a few vines growing up into the spokes so I'm guessing stored outside but covered. Paint is great and moving parts move well. Light surface rust on the chain and freewheel. Schwinn bottle, cool little seat bag, leather bar wraps. Nice little flipper.

I picked up a Trek 420 Fastrack frame, and a few bits still hanging on it, for $10. It's a small 48/50cm frame in dark blue, and chrome-moly tubing throughout.
I think it's a 96 according to vintage-treks site.

It has an Exage 7-spd freehub and 700C Weinmann rimmed rear wheel, but I can't be sure it's OEM. Smells and looks like the wheel was near a fire. Soot stains abound. No front wheel, brake caliper, and crank. Frame is in fair condition from being stored outside. Not sure what plans for this one. It's kinda cute, but my wife has a similar ride in a Schwinn Super Le Tour.

frenchbikefan 08-05-11 01:59 AM

WNG, I also live in arid zona-a and I would be interested in the frame if you decide to get rid of it. I have a devil of a time finding a frame my size. I have a rather large lemond zurich frame if you would like to do a trade

Frenchbikefan,
PM sent!

Those are also fairly decent handlebar bags. Good place to stick your keys, wallet, cell phone, extra bottle of water, etc.

My friend called me the other day and said he had an old mountain bike with the slackest angles he had ever seen and that it was more like an old Dutch bicycle than a mountain bike because of these slack angles.

Asked me if I wanted it and also added that it said Tom Ritchey.

And it's green.

It is sitting in my shop now as he dropped it off and would guesstimate that is an early 80's model by virtue of the Deore Stag's head front d and the description of the wide Shimano cantis my friend pulled off the frame... At50's methinks.

It is like this... sans bars, shifters (I have a Deore Stags head set), and cantis (I have the right replacements)... and some proper era mtb wheels too.

F'n A B and C... canna wait to rebuild it.

http://www.oldmountainbikes.com/bike...can0003_sm.jpg

Edit: Serial number indicates it is an H model from 1984... beautiful tig welds and canti mounts with vertical drop outs.

You get so lucky with stuff!

That would make an awesome city bike converted to IGH and northroad bars on a high stem -sort of like my Big Dumb Mt. Ross.

That's one of my favorites also, I'm still green with envy!

This isnt much, but anyone with a garage full of Stronglight cranks might appreciate it.

I have been putting off buying one of these Stronglight crank extractors for awhile now, due to the $50plus price tag. I happened to stop in a bike shop, and asked if they had one...

$27. Not a bargain, but much better than what I expected.

Will see how original I can get... need some bull moose bars, would love to find the original high flange Shimano / Ukai wheels but the high flange Suzue / Arayas were good enough for many Kuwaharas from that era so should look appropos.

Won't get to this for quite a while but am very impressed with the workmanship in the frame... one would be hard pressed to find nicer tig welds and Tom was a great builder of bicycles as well as a great designer.

The picture is not of my bike but of one that is very close to original... am thinking my Shimano crankset is also original to the bike and the old cold forged Shimano cranks are a thing of beauty.

Picked up a Raleigh Portage(?) 650b specific frame w/ a set of 26 inch wheels for $75. 63cm frame. The hubs are original and were rebuilt into 26 inch Sun Rini-lite rims because the previous owner could not get 650b tires in the 80's.

I'm new here, trying to find out as much info on this bike as i can, my girlfriend saw it at a local Tip/refuge recycle shop and we bought it to restore as a nice vintage style retro bike for her, but Ive soon realised it's possibly a pre war 1930's rare bike, it's made here in the UK by a firm called Coventry Eagle, the origin of most bicycles from 1800's etc, and i live about 30 miles from where it would of been built etc.

I'm not sure what to do with it, as I'm not sure if it has much value more then the £20 i payed for it??

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/7470/dscf3121j.jpg

Most of the marking's have worn off as there all hand painted on, just not sure what to do for the best of it's future value etc..

Any help and info would be nice.

Scott

What a cool crank!

ScottParker - Welcome to C&V.
You'll find that old 3-speeds have a pretty strong following here, along with some knowledgeable people.
I'm sure your bike is worth the price for the local interest alone - but if I were you, I'd clean it and overhaul it completely, so that it's ready to roll another 70 years. Very interesting find.
