A friend of mine found this Giant Acapulco in a dumpster.
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6008/...af19af75_b.jpg
It wasn't technically free: I bought her a coffee and a slice of carrot cake at the local coffee shop for it. All it needed was a set of pedals and a chain.

Check out the exotic tubing. :)

Great find, and the original racks make it even better! Can't believe someone else didn't scoop it.

One thing I have found around here that above about $200, vintage bikes don't move that fast. But that is in Hooterville. So some of the "best" deals are vintage bikes in the $300 to $400 range.

Even in my market much past 250 will really reduce the "impulse buyers", though i doubt the miyata 1000 would have lasted long

Peugot from the scrap yard

Picked up this Peugot from the local scrap yard today, along with a few mtb parts, for $5.00. The frame is marked "Carbolite," which I'm assuming is some sort of carbon steel. It has Suntour derailleurs, Wolber alloy rims, and the paint is very nice. Is this a project for flipping? Frame is too small for me, it doesn't appear to be a high-end bike, and it needs a bottom bracket, crank, and chain (which shouldn't run more than $25-30). I'm just not sure if I should put the work into it. Is it desireable? Sellable?http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=211667http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=211668http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=211669

Just around a few corners from my house I found a scene from hoarders. Was driving home and happened to notice this old garage door open, and thought I saw a bike frame. Swung the car around and peaked in and saw that amongst the piles of junk, old wheels, old tires, old motorcycle wheels/tires, lawnmowers and general trash was about 20 bikes.

I asked the guy out side if any were sale. After a bit of thinking, and a lot of digging, and no haggling because he was pretty stead fast on his price, this is what I got.

Schwinn Traveller and a 1992 Trek 850 Antelope

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...l/DSC_4819.jpg

Trek 700 Multitrack (frame is trash due to seized seatpost) and a GT Tequesta single speed conversion

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...l/DSC_4820.jpg

70's Raleigh/Carlton Corsair 10spd and another Trek 700 Multitrack

I also got him to throw in a few 27" wheels I dug for, and tires as well

Whole lot cost me $170. If you know any info on these bikes, please do share.
Hopefully will be able to flip these for a profit.

That GT frame is big for a mountain bike you might try just selling it as a frame first. I think you did alright at about $30 a bike.

Well, I didn't find this 1978 Beekay three wheeler at the dump, but I did get if for nothing.

The tricycle was used two times and for very short jaunts. The lady who owned the three wheeler did not like it. With that in mind, her husband hung it upside down in his garage. Thirty three years passed and two days ago, he took the trike down and donated it to Bicycles for Humanity. I love my job!

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=211671 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=211672

The bike will join the last three wheeler we received, a near mint E-Z-Roll.

Oh, I almost forgot about the Beekay's tires. They are in great shape and original issue. Have a look...

It's in nice condition! But it's entry level. So, your return won't be as high as if it's a more desirable Peugeot.
But at 5 bucks, even with the cost of a used crank and BB, plus a new chain, you should be able to at least double your investment.

i sold a carbolite peugeot (uo-9) for $200 in one day so i'd say definitely worth fixing up, though i don't know what the bike market is like in wisconsin

I agree, it depends on the local market. The savvy guys here wouldn't consider it, but we know what it is.

Thanks so much for the advice. It was the mtb parts I was after, Shimano derailleurs for another project, but I couldn't pass up the Peugot. Thanks again. I like the adventure, so now I'll go after a crank, etc.

Bikedued 07-22-11 08:11 PM

Oh man, I'd love to turn that GT into a touring/commuting rig! I may be getting my old giant Cannondale M1000 back soon, but if that falls through? I thought I had a deal made on that big Raleigh a few pages back, but oh well. All I want is a reasonable BIG frame mtb. to build my project on. The Cannondale would be perfect, so I hope it happens:D.,,,,BD

She just messaged me saying the local used bike shop just sent her a list of bikes they have for sale, and one of them was this exact bike...

...for $300.

I'm guessing they have to have high profit margins for whatever they're smoking.

I'm guessing she wants more than a piece of cake now ;)

I saw someone with a GT frame like that, but in blue built up as a drop bar hybrid.. Or maybe a CX. It was on the back of their car, so I didn't exactly get a good look, nor was I able to ask them about it. But I did see the GT logo on it.

She was going to fix it up herself, but decided that wasn't going to happen after it sat in her shed for a year.

Great finds IMO. I sure could use some parts off of one of those Trek hybrids. I think you did well.

Pick up this "Elvis" cruiser up mostly for future rat rod bike build parts. The price was right and it has some cool features (forks, twisted spokes, flame seat).
http://i914.photobucket.com/albums/a...EE88EFE922.jpg

I also found this for a buck. Everyone needs a flaming skull. I plan to make this a headlight on a future build.

^ that skull with lights in the eyes would be pretty ill

I was riding past a second hand machinery scrap yard though an industrial area and on shear impulse went in and asked if there was any old bikes lying around, this 90 or so year old guy that lived on the lot took me to a crumbling room attached to the back of his shed and found this 1977 Dawes Galaxy GT also a Avanti Hybrid in very good nic.
The Galaxy has been repainted poorly at some point so its an easy decision to paint it properly again and already ordered new hoods and decals. The Avanti is for my dad to ride around our property.
The Dawes is a touring bike with lovely riding qualitys with a 531 Reynolds frame.
GB bars and stem, Weinmann brakes and wheels, SR apex 5 crank and Suntour groupo with V-GT derailliers and power shifters.
I've been riding it as is just lubed the chain and changed the pedals "nice ride"
http://i950.photobucket.com/albums/a...T/DSCF1745.jpg
The Avanti has a fully lugged Tange tubed frame and fork and pulls mono's like no tomorrow.

A classic! :thumb:

The Avanti looks pretty good. I'd bet a black rear rack would look great on it!

It looks like you stepped into the right place!

You could probably mount that skull lantern on a front rack like the one below. Add a small CD player and an amplified speaker and you could have some fun playing spooky songs and noises on your nightly rides. http://www.nashbar.com/images/nashba...-NCL-ANGLE.jpg
