I think I saw that bike. Was it from the guy who is moving and had another bike with it? The ad focused on the other bike and had like one or two bad, dark pics of the Nishiki hanging upside down. My thought when I saw the ad was, "Forget the road bike, that Nishiki looks cool."

Found it: http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/bik/3661304594.html

That motobecane looks nice too. Did you give him the ol' bundle approach like Frank likes to do? :)

Chris_in_Miami 03-07-13 03:07 PM

Putting the mother in law on rollers? Be sure to have the camera rolling :)

Nice find though, definitely worth the c-note.

YUP, that would be the one....only enough for this one, he did throw in a car rack, and offered a couple BSOs for next to nothing. The Moto, a NEW one from CHINA 4130 CroMo tig welded, DT Shifters, very clean, entry level road bike...but I already have several ridable road bikes and a couple in the works...$250 is probably about half price, so an OK buy. I did not recognize ANY of the brand name parts on it though....Nishiki is VERY clean, just a few scratches, a tiny bit of rust, needs tires, bar tape, grease, a pedal cap...

shoota 03-07-13 03:35 PM

Nice snag. Too bad the guy threw out that Bushnell scope, I've been wanting one of those.

Buddy called me and asked me to go get an ugly trek hybrid he picked up

Built a bike from craigslisted parts today. I have ~$300 in it. I'm pretty happy.

Picked up an '88 (guessing, since it has a rear U-brake) Jamis Diablo the other day. Tange MTB tubing and Exage Mountain SLR components. It has some odd features: dual bottle cage mounts on the down tube, a one-hole mount for something-or-other on the underside of the top tube, fillet brazed-looking joints at the head tube, and the top tube tapers down at the seat tube. I slapped new tires, a rack and saddle bag, some Deore XT pedals, fenders and a Brooks Pro on it today. It's not quite done yet. I kind of want to change out the stem and maybe put drop bars on it, but even now it's a pretty slick little number.

Yes, it is. I think the one hole mounts on the top and seat tubes are for the strap that goes over your shoulder so you can carry the bike more comfortably. Just a guess here on that.

Decent garage sale day. A donor Diamondback MTB, with extra wheels, a nicer Burnt Orange Diamondback MTB (with matching orange bars), a tricolor front wheel, an Ultegra RD, a nice Serfas floor pump, and a cool Colnago jersey. The Ascent and Apex were both good models at one time.

The donor bike was pulled out of the weeds in the backyard, along with four of the wheels. Even still, it has a decent set of Deore derailleurs, thumb shifters, two OK wheels, canti brakes, and a nice crankset. We'll see if the seat post is stuck...

Those tioga stems are nearly perfect for a drop bar conversion. Looks like you had a good day out and about. Still too frozen for a garage sale up here. Soon though.

frantik 03-10-13 08:41 PM

nice Bill.... an 89 Diamondback Apex and a 86 Diamondback Ascent (guessing on the year.. 87 catalog doesnt have that color and in 88 they changed decals)

I have an 89 Apex in a bigger size.. never liked the ride, but the components are very nice (almost all Deore II except the hubs) That Ascent may be all tange mtb tubing as well, not sure when the Ascent (not Ascent EX) went with straight gauge stays and fork

From the same buddy that sold me the "ugly hybrid" :), he brings bikes from Colorado down to Texas.

I love the TS IV. I've had a couple of them, fortunately not my size...

Bill, knowing how you are not a big fan on Flipping MTB's I will give you my address and you can just ship them off to me & I will gladly take good care of them for you. That Ascent looks to be my size & I don't have a orange bike & we all know everyone needs at least one orange bike.

I can confirm that statement, that's what the holes are for. Sometimes you can find an aftermarket strap or some people just cut up an old belt.http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=303787

Went to go check out this Performance Elan I saw in an old and obscure listing on c-list. It was advertised as 24" which it obviously is not. The front wheel is garbage and the rear is out of true. What the heck, for $120 I was still getting a mint frame and a really nice full 105 groupset (minus front hub). My roommate needs a bike and I have a wheelset that I could swap right in...

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...ps39519024.jpg

...and then the seller shows me this...(just the frame fork and headset. I got a bit excited and started building it up when I got home. haha)

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...psea5224c1.jpg

A frame much closer to my fit!!! It was really dark out so it was kind of difficult to look the bike over, but I wanted it bad! It's pretty well ridden but I don't see and noticeable cracks or damage. Looks like the wheelset I had in mind for the Performance is going to the Kestrel as well as the 105 group from the Performance. haha! That's okay though, because I should be able to true up the old rear wheel and I have some suntour sprint bits still laying around to go in the 105's place. Just need to pick up the usual disposables and find a front wheel for it then it'll be set.

Oh yeah...he threw in the kestrel for $40. figured it was worth the price of admission for a carbon fork and dura ace headset even if the frame turned out to be junk!

frantik 03-12-13 08:18 PM

crabon for $40? nice

WNG 03-12-13 10:42 PM

+100 Holy Cow! Classic Kestrel for only $40!?! Just got floored! Thank goodness it's not my size. ;)

One nice feature of both the DB MTBs is that they have front rack brazeons on the fork. They both could make nice drop bar/touring style conversions. I think I will do that with the orange one.

+1000 What a grab on that Kestrel.
