^Same here! Just my size too! No, I get the 64cm or the 54cm frame come my way. Never!!!! do I get the 60cm!!! I'm the Rodney Dangerfield of bike-oriented-dumpster-divers...

my best was 30 a year-made 7k that summer.
hope i never do that again-too much work for too little money.

I agree. If I count time. it's a losing proposition. Yet I still flip a few here and there.
30 bike, that seems like a lot to me but can't complain about the extra 7K

^Nice score! Those Michelin tires are a pain in the neck to mount/remove though. I know, I've got two sets of the things...

frantik 02-14-13 04:37 AM

thanks for the warning.. I just took a test ride and was actually pretty impressed with the tires.. (along with the rest of the bike :D) i could feel a little resistance due to the tread but they still rolled for days and the side tread didn't seem to affect traction on hard surfaces. most tires i've tried with side knobbies feel sketchy in the turns

makes me want to get some nicer tires for my Univega

Grabbed this today. A 1981 Nishiki International. At least that is what I gathered from the serial # KA06819. It is a bit rough cosmetically and I think the rear der. has been replaced. The front is a Suntour which should have been original and the rear is a Shimano 400CX, but solid other wise. I really like the lugs on these bikes. The price was right also.

It's been dead around here on Craigslist for about a year, not sure why but I keep looking anyways. There are bikes on Craigslist but their all those single speed old bikes, BMX/stunt bikes, heavy Schwinn tanks, or the Walmart type of crap. Then I get daily reports from here about all the great bikes you all are finding.

I'm jealous.

ultraman6970 02-20-13 05:59 PM

Haha these guys are always getting good stuff in the trash, free at cl or in the city dump. I never found crap in any of those 3 places :hehe

anixi 02-20-13 07:10 PM

^I just got myself a 7-speed Next soft-tail cruiser at the co-op for $1. I suppose that's a catch, even though I've spent three days getting it in shape and converting the bolt-ons to quick release. Took it out today with the kids in the cold (37 degrees) and froze my chin.

Scored a 1983 Mercien off craigslist for $60. Pics to come tomorrow.

Finally found one of these that is not super tall, buddy of mine picked it up at a local car swap meet for pennies and gave me a very good can't say no price on it.

Picked up this Trek 520 the other day from the thrift store $35.00 feeling pretty good about it!

Cheers,
Chris

Very good pick-up. A 520 was my first road bike. To answer your question about the steer tube being red, I think it is factory because mine was too. Enjoy!

Here is my "new" Mercian. The serial # ends in 83, so I'm assuming it's a 1983 (King of Mercia?) It has mostly campy on it. Not bad for $60 in my mind.

Another nice catch. That is an interesting set-up. What would make a hipster get rid of that? :)

shoota 02-22-13 06:43 PM

Not bad at all

I don't know about others, but most of my finds are not off C/L. Every year or two, where I find bikes completely changes. Four years ago, I could find almost an unlimited number of bikes at thrift stores. Bought five in one stop, four at another. Those were great times for sure! That source has been gone for several years.

The local C/L rarely has anything either. When I do find bikes on C/L, they tend to be a few hours away (one way, in another city). So I have to balance the added gas and travel against the deal. Drove two hours one way to pick up a Dave Scott Ironman two weeks ago.

My last good C/L road bike find was from an ad for a totally, completely, trashed old MTB. I decided to check it out, even though it looked rough. It was worse in person (what a waste of time), but then the seller rolled out a road bike he had neglected to post on C/L, and included it in the deal. Score.

Lol. That is funny. Didn't notice that. I bet that is one awkward bike to try to ride though. What pieces are Campy?

CL has been good to me as of late. Within the last month, I have found a 1997 Specialized Ground Control Comp, a pair of his and hers 1972 Sshwinn Suburbans in Sierra Brown, with little signs of use, and a 1989 Schwinn 564 Aluminum road bike that's in good shape, despite a thick coat of dust. The most I paid was $50 for the Suburbans, but the kicker was that the seller had bought $100 worth of parts from Bike Tires Direct that didn't fit the bikes and he threw them in. So I also got 4 Continental 1 1/8 Ultra Sports, 4 sets of Avid threaded V brake shoes and 2 bikes worth of SS shift and brake cables. :thumb:

That's spectacular! You'll be glad you got all that when our WA state taxes skyrocket! ;)

raverson 02-23-13 12:34 AM

I will certainly shed a tear when they start taxing out of state internet sales, but as it is, I already pay my fair share. I count my blessings that Wa. doesn't have a state income tax. (yet)

curbtender 02-23-13 07:41 AM

I drove by SIMS metal recycling and they had a backup of pickups waiting to get in. Almost every truck had some bikes or parts in the loads. It would be fun to go down some afternoon and see what they have. I'd bet $5 for a bike would be better than the $2 mixed metal for one.
