I have posted this a couple times here in different threads. This '73 Raleigh Grand Sports needed a ton of love when I bought it for $47. My guess is that it would have gone out with the trash had I not saved it. I did a complete overhaul, repaint and upgraded some components (from the parts bin). The chrome was in near perfect condition which amazed me compared to the paint. I couldn't justify buying decals because they cost as much as I paid for the bike. I have a total of $75 bucks invested in it (including cost of bike). I sure wish I had taken some 'before' pictures. Here is the finished product.

Haha, all of these bikes are so nice. @BLUMEANIE may have posted his red '63 Raleigh Sports years ago but I have to say it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Can't take my eyes off it. I'm currently building up a '79 Superbe with a 5-speed hub and upside down north road bars.
As for the bikes I've saved from the dump: 1958 Raleigh Sports. I have been riding for my whole life but this is THE bike that got me into cycling. It's hard to imagine we've only been together for 1 year and 2 months. It was rusty and I wanted to keep riding it so I completely disassembled, de-rusted, and repainted it in summer '14. Original dynohub, original SW hub. Runs like a dream. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=430960http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=430961http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=430962http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=430963http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=430964http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=430965 1979 Ross Professional Gran Tour This is the beater I got last September. All of the components started dying soon after I got it so I grabbed brake calipers and derailleurs off other bikes at the dump just to make it work. The saddle was free, too. I have since fixed the rear "brake cable" pictured below, but it still makes me laugh. This is literally hashed together and can be seen on the Frankenbikes thread. It is by no means nice, but it works well enough for me. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=430966http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=430967http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=430968http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=430969 Not pictured: 1976 Schwinn Varsity. I didn't have the heart to let it be thrown away but I didn't actually want it. It required more money than I'd be willing to throw down to get it roadworthy for myself. Luckily, one of my best friends took one look (then many more) and said he'd like for me to rebuild it for him, if I didn't mind, so that project is happily going on along side my Raleigh Superbe and school at the moment. I also have many other old, heavy steel rides that were saved from the dump. Those are for sale and I have sold two; four left and I hope other college kids will consider them once the weather warms up. My next hope is that these bikes don't go back to the dump once the new owners are done with them ... |
haha, sweet!

Love that bike. Was the original color orange? Never understood why owners repaint bikes...GREAT FIND. Pawn owner must of thought it was a mongoose or something....

On the way home from the Sunday ride, I said WTH I am going to drive up the I-45 feeder road and hit the pawn shops. Well, first one was a bust, bunch of Wally World BSO's, etc. Then I pull up to shop number two. I parked the truck and walked up to the row of bikes. Same old..same old. There's like 20 bikes and nothing is even worth looking at... Hang on, what is that MASSIVE frame tube?? My eyes focused, and I see smoothed welds on big chunky aluminum tubes. Hmmm, those forks aren't your normal mtb fare..? The bottom fork stiffening hoop was huge, and why are the tubes going past the lower headset? I only know one brand of bike that looks like this? CANNONDALE!! A couple of phone searches, and what I have discovered here is a repainted with no decals, 97 Super V with a Moto fork upgrade. I hesitate a moment, because I know there's no way this will be affordable. I slowly turn the tag expecting $350+, and my eyes are greeted with the figure of FIFTY NINE DOLLARS!!! This can't be right? I went in to the store immediately, and they followed me out. We talked about it a minute, and asked them if they would take $50. They immediately agreed, and I paid my money and got out of there.:D
I've always been a Cannondale fan, and this a completely new animal for me. It will definitely get a repaint, and I have some much higher end goodies to put on it. XTR and XT mainly. The shifters are XT already, with the Servo wave levers that I'm not a huge fan of. They seem to work well with both the Hayes disc brake and the V brake in back. This bike doesn't feel as heavy as it actually is, and even in the middle ring I can get the front wheel off the ground in the lower range. Love it so far, and it can only get better with a little work. The chainrings are THICK!! I imagine they double as bash guards?,,,,BD http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psrkut43ak.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...pslzsbeus9.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...pseptbcksm.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...pshvnvcr9u.jpg |
I saw some pics of tandem frames stripped to their base and hung on walls, really cool look.

I think it is a crime to paint over a celeste green bianchi... like you should get your hand cut off.

This was at the landfill swap shop,at first thought it was a late '80's Japanese frame. Saw the B on the lug & within a couple of minutes of googling the Quarttro components figured out what this was despite the hidious re spray. Obvious swapped out bits - seat post from Ofmega to Advent, RD to Shimano Exage 500EX. Wheels, not shown, Joytech hubs & Araya rims. Needs a ton of attention but it's coming apart easier than I thought.
The head tube/fork crown shot shows where quite a bit of paint flaked off. Under florescent light I can't tell if that's primer or if this was originally actually Cileste. |
Awesome find!

Nice, that upgraded front fork really makes the bike even more worth it. Coda cranks look BA too.

Dito on the "spoke to me". Sometimes these bike need a second chance to get them back into the world. That little dude was not ready for the recycle center, someone else can certainly appreciate it. I would rather see the world filled with vintage road bikes than cheap NEXT rides. Thanks for doing your part man!

I should have known better than to pick up such a low-end pile of rust, but the price was right and it "spoke to me" for some reason.

http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps168dbe08.jpg Forgive the front brake cable routing, which was promptly corrected after the photo was taken. |
Awesome, great flip someone will be lucky. Did you replace the chain? is the crank set chrome or alumin?

This was found at the curb on trash day in Wake Forest NC during my last year of repping before returning to school, and this one has a shop story. Raleigh Sports ladies' 23" green with a '69 SA hub date, another rare bird and one I'm keeping for the day when I can no longer swing a leg over my men's 23" Sports and need a step-through frame. I'm anticipating riding well into my dotage. Shop sticker says it's from Cycles & Sports in Washington DC. I'd called on this shop in my repping days and at the time it was the oldest continuously original-family ownership shop in the U.S., according to owner Pearl, an old lady then (late '80s) and the daughter of the founder. The shop had sold by the time I found the bike so I never got to show Pearl the bike from her store, but named it for her. It's been boxed up since I brought it home more than 15 years ago, but appears to need only a rear tube to be roadworthy.

I need to ban myself from Ebay, just picked this up. Probably paid too much but it had everything I had been looking for to do my first STI conversion using an RSX triple group. Near as I can tell it's about a 1990, paint will clean up well and all decals look to be in very good shape.

^ sweet, i didn't know Diamondback offered any lugged road bikes. I thought by that time they had moved to tig welding

My favorite ever was my first year Dave Scott, when there was only one model. Shouldn't have sold it, but I needed money at the time.:(,,,,BD

Picked up a wheelset for the Diamondback. Mavic rims on Ultegra hubs, look very similar to the OEM wheels that came on the Interval.

I did not save this. William Barrett (eBay - reperagevelo) in Grenoble, FR did:
Routens 700c Frame Fork 55cm x 55cm 120mm Old 1970's Used | eBay http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNj...U4O9G/$_57.JPG Not your everyday "bike at the dump". From William's post to CR: I kid you not. I found this Routens in the metal recycling pile at Reperages. At first all I noticed were the Mafac Competition engraved brakes because there were other bikes on top of it. |
^ Wow. That's some dumpster dive!
