Hey if you need a 21.1 stem for that superior, I think jcb3 has one looking for a home.

Great projects there, every one. Pretty terrific about you and your dad getting to go riding together.

I also have a couple, one of them a GB and another that is pretty nicely finished but I forget the brand. Incidentally, while the decimal equivalent of the size is 21.1 they are actually made and marked as .833 (inches) and are not metric-sized stems.

Late '80's (I think) Stump Jumper from a garage sale last summer. I got it for $12. It had been sitting in a garage unused for many years but was ready to ride except for needing tires/tubes. This bike has a special place in my heart because my brother, now deceased, had one just like it that he was pretty proud of back in the day. This is more of a commuter around town for me.

Better pictures of the LeTour I found in the garbage. I think its a 79 LeTour IV which is a Chicago made 1020 frame, correct? I am not sure on my plans what to do with it.

The rest of it I parted to my buddy working on his old Varsity. I kept the stem and the seat. I believe they are both original.

Cool, thanks everyone.

So pardon my ignorance but are all old schwinns or the majority of them 21.1mm stems?

This can confuse even the long timers. Generally, the lower-to-moderate end U.S. made bikes, from forever ago until the mid-'80s, are .833 stem bikes. The top of the line Paramounts and the imported (Japanese and Taiwanese) bikes used the 22.2. It was not until Schwinn moved U.S. production to the Greenville MS plant that they adopted the standard, but I could be wrong on this. It may take a Schwinn maniac, of which I am not one, to detail the specific models and years. When dealing with the '80s-and-earlier bikes it's best to have a caliper on you or be prepared to yank the stem to check the markings.

You should post this photo in the current thread on the Avocet Touring seats, especially since it was a garbage find.

Late '86. The first half of 1986, they came with cantilevers front and rear. Late '86, they added the u-brake under the chainstays.

Great bike!

Ross Centaur

Picked up this '86 or '87 Ross Centaur tonight without knowing what it was. The online pics were terrible, but I was able to notice the downtube shifters and I figured I couldn't really go wrong for $10. It's pretty much complete and original minus a missing front wheel, and the fact that someone rattle canned the pink head tube and seat tube black, attached a rubber rat to the stem, and named it "The Plague Rat" which is painted on the top tube  Not sure what to do with it really, but I guess I'll think of something!

You should totally keep it as-is, rat and all, and add a 20" front wheel to complete the late-80's / early 90's punk-rebel customization styling. Take good pictures of it and see if you can get a buyer marketing it as a piece of retro punk memorabilia... err, what I meant to say is, $10 was a great price for that.

Haha yeah I'm not really into the whole punk rock vibe it has going on, and it's about an inch too big for me anyway. I think I'm probably just going to strip it of all it's components and keep them for a better project frame in the future. Then I'll probably sell or trade the frame and fork for something.

That sounds fun, but I have way too many projects going on as it is lol. Plus that frame is too big for me.

It's filthy, needs clean, bearings greased. I have new cables , tires and bar tape. Put bottle cages and my pedals on, then it's finished.

rumrunn6 01-13-17 12:31 PM

nice

sloar Maybe it's just my imagination, but you seem to find way more bikes than anyone else. You even admit it: "Bikes: they change so much I'm tired of updating this."

Elwood doesn't seem like it would be a hotbed of vintage bike enthusiasts. Is there something in the water there? Do strays just follow you home? Do you have a buddy in the scrap metal business? What's your secret?

Going back to my early years of mt. biking and found this Hardrock which is exactly the same model as my first Specialized. piggybacked with it is this Dyno/GT bmx from early 2000 or so.

Nice "bad weather" bike. I have a soft spot for Fujis, I have a Club Fuji that's one of my favorites.

No photos yet, but picked up a very nice 1997 Trek Y22 mountain bike from Craigslist this afternoon. Excellent original condition, just dirty and greasy. I drooled over these when they were new; couldn't say "no" to this at $50! Seller was just happy to get it out of his garage.

Must have been the one in California. White frame with a Judy XC. Nice score!
