Catch for today. A 1986 Schwinn Prelude. Columbus Tenax, Suntour Cyclone and someone switched out the downtubes to stem mounted Suntour Accushift. Also I love the engineering of the rear rack to make it a bouncy rack with an old tube :). In my best sarcastic voice. "I guess I'll take it for $6 at an auction".

Dumpster on the way to the park
My daughter and i were riding to the neighborhood park when we spotted this lonely bike sitting outside the trash enclosure. A quick trip later in the day and Bumblebee is in our garage going through a rebuild. She will fit my daughter in a couple of years and i am sure will get lots of happy miles.

This is the seller's picture, not mine - I may come back and add more pix later if I get the chance!
1988 Panasonic DX3000 for $40 - the second wheelset (tubulars?) got accidentally packed up by the movers and carried off to the seller's storage unit. The good news is the seller is moving to my county, so sooner or later I will get a text and go pick them up. For now, I'm digging it. It slots neatly between the 1988 Centurion LeMans (Tange 2 tubing with Mangaloy fork and Exage Sports parts) and the 1988 Specialized Sirrus (unknown probably Tange tubing with full 105 parts). Interesting mix of 105 brakes, shifters and derailleurs with Exage freewheel hubs - I think. I'll look closer to see if they actually really early 1st gen Uniglide freehubs without the hump. But for $40? No brainer. Might even be my size. Originally I thought I would be using it as a donor for the Lighthouse, but now I'm not so sure ... https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7700acea0b.jpg |

A couple of years since the last time I posted in this thread. Saw a pic in an ad for an estate sale so I went and checked it out this morning. A Gran Sport for $60 - I tried to resist but you know that story... In good shape overall, paint will liven up with a wash and polish and fortunately the seat post was not stuck. I had a 1972 23" white with blue trim that I sold a couple of months ago, this one is larger, will fit better, and I like the blue with white trim. Time will tell if it's a keeper.

I knew i shouldn't have followed the sign to the yard sale. I am in Nashville, TN attending to a property I own here and yesterday saw a garage sale nearby. They had this Nishiki Custom Sport asking $25 at the end of the sale. had a very optimistic sticker of $200 on it so I grabbed it. Seems very nice. It is a bit large for me so i may put it up for sale in NYC in the Spri

A very small catch (a minnow?). We brought a Trek 720 back from NY recently. (I mentioned it a few pages ago.) Ellen decided she wanted to try it out and see if it would work for her. I came out to help her get ready to roll.
Me: What happened to the toe straps? Ellen: I threw them out. They were all rusty. Me: Nothing a little Evapo-Rust can't cure. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c03606bdb9.jpg Sure, they are just crappy nylon straps, but still... |
How it started:
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e77d06dc91.jpg How it's going: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...bba65d7fb0.jpg A $45 Pinarello!! The frame is in terrible cosmetic condition, but the full 6400 tricolor group looks very usable. Detail shots: https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...dc6d69b1a7.jpg Seatpost is frozen, of course. Random Campy binder bolt makes me wonder if the 6400 group is original. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d9f2396dcf.jpg I assume the Tange fork is a replacement. No evident collision damage to the top or down tubes though. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...70babc086c.jpg Look carbon pedals and a bottle eyelet treatment I've never seen before--perfectly flush with the seat tube If anyone is interested in the pedals, or greatly desires a smallish Pinarello frame in need of extensive restoration, PM me. Someday I may get around to burning the seatpost out with lye, but I'll never be able to do the frame justice. |
In spite of the soggy ride there and back, I had fun at our co-op's semi-annual garage sale. Main score was these three sets of pedals, including what I thnk are Centaur mtb set with minimal use. I also got some other misc parts and a tubular cross wheelset with a M950 XTR rear hub.

Brought this garage hanger home and it didn't even get out of the car when an old friend came by that didn't know he needed a bike. He brought a girl's bike for me to check out for his granddaughter. He decided he needed one so he could ride with her. Cost plus a bag of avocados from his tree? Done deal...Nishiki Backroads.

Wait, avocados grow on trees? I'm definitely going to plant one here when spring rolls around. Maybe a mango tree or two as well, while I'm at it.

l have an open space behind my house that I throw the pits in. One started and was about 6' tall when a work crew cut it making a fire setback. Maybe you could hybrid one with a maple tree and get some avocado syrup.

A Bianchi followed me home, but that was not the prize from Bike Works last weekend. Here's the Bianchi a nice little Formula Two tubing.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...bfbeda97ce.jpg |
The prize was threefold.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6c3cccc465.jpg
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ec0edba519.jpg The Romic was frame headset bb and seatpost, the white one is a De Rosa it came with headset and bb, the wheels on the De Rosa also came from the sale last weekend as well. |
Wow!
That Romic is gorgeous What are the build plans for it? |
I'm not sure with what I should build the Romic. Right now I'm leaning towards Shimano but the Romic asis is set at 120mm. Vintage Campy is possible but not likely, my need for lower gearing is going to drive how it gets built. Vintage Shimano is a better match.
The De Rosa will more likely get mostly period Super Record to match the wheels it currently rolling on. I'm also shopping for decals and hopefully I can get a good paint match for the White Pearl touch up. So much for all the space I cleared last with last month's donation to the coop. |
mega Räder, das aufarbeiten macht am meisten spaß

Catch(es) of the day.
This Allez Comp has been at the local bike thrift shop for quite some time. The lugs have been keeping me up at night, they are so nice. It's on the lower end of what size frame I can ride, but those lugs! I asked about it (again), and today was given a price I could not refuse. The front Mavic Ksyrium SSC had been hanging on the wall for at least a month, and I was really sad that there was not a matching rear to go with it. Well, today, hanging right next to it, was a black Ksyrium rear. It's an Elite, with slightly thinnner blades, and just so happens it is spaced the same as the rear in the Allez. So, I asked about the "package deal" price on the wheels, and again got a price I could simply not refuse. So (I think we all know how this is going to end).................. The plan is to make this into a parts bin build, "winter beater". I also dug through the bins a bit deeper than usual, and found a few other goodies: -Shimano 600 "brifters". The left side is NOS and was on the shelf of "better quality items", and I found the right side buried in a tub with a lot of low end levers. Right seems to work fine, just has a little rash on the outer side, otherwise pretty nice (but missing the clamp). -One each of Suntour and Dura Ace track cogs -Another Mavic front skewer. -A Shimano Ultegra 6500 long cage rear derailleur, which I am going to put on my Koga to allow better hill climbing gearing. Also picked up another Ultegra 6500 (short cage) for parts. -Two Helicomatic freewheels, for the freewheel rebuilder of the forum. Sinyard was no dummy, a tyrant yes, a dummy, no. ;) |
