New pics of the SR400 tomorrow. It's a;ready cleaned up and redone. Both wheels had a nasty hop, so I will have to lace some new rims onto those wheels if the hubs check out. Campy brake levers replaced the AGC's, which I have never felt comfortable with. New Benotto ribbon, see through cable housing, and cables. It promises to be a fun rider. Thie shifting is quite smooth and easy. Perfect Suntour functionality:D.,,,,BD

I found a steel lugged maroon or burgundy (they're pretty much the same) colored Dawes frame and fork with brake calipers DGC500 (which were Dia Compe Grand Compe) and Sunshine hubs (not sure if original) but no other components except handlebar and seat post, the frame doesn't have a model name just says handmade in script and there's a sticker of the British flag that says made in Britain, with another sticker that says Reynolds 531st, I know what the st stands for but I don't know what model of Dawes this bike is and can't seem to find it on the internet either, the head badge is a black oval outlined in silver with the words Dawes in silver, it has Dawes forged dropouts. Serial number is ZD5859 if that helps which I understand there are no records on Dawes serial numbers? I'm also unable to get photos to post on this forum which doesn't help anyone to try to determine what model it is. It's probably a Galaxy made in the 80's. The frame/fork and paint is in really good condition, no rust and very little in the way of scratches.
Anyone with any info on what I might have would be appreciated, and what the original components were because I would want to try to bring it back to that. Anyway I have project bike that I will very slowly work on as time allows, probably more of a retirement project. |
Well, I can't say for certain that this would have gone to the dump, but the seller was clearing it out as prep for moving... and in the photo it was sitting on a couple trashcans. Bad photo, but I was able to make it out - a 1987 Schwinn Circuit.
http://routinezero.com/bikes/circuit1.jpg It seems all original except for the saddle and pedals - Suntour Sprint drivetrain and Royal Compe braking. Needs a full overhaul, because brakes and shifters are very sticky. And tragically, the Suntour Sprint front hub is destroyed. Looks like someone stepped hard on the front wheel when it was lying on its side or something. But there's no significant frame rust, everything looks straight, seatpost and stem aren't stuck, and the paint will probably clean up with rubbing compound. To be honest, though, there's a small paint chip on the fork which suggests that the fork is chromed under the paint... and I'm real tempted to strip some of the paint and have some chrome up front to match the rear. I'll start a build thread as I get going. |

This is a great find. If the Tempo and Super Sport are any indication, that Circuit will flat out fly when it's all tuned up. I rarely see these... Maybe I need to look in the garbage more often :)
Good luck looking in the garbage near you. :) I actually wasn't totally sure what it was when I first saw the seller's photo (he just called it an old Schwinn). I thought, "hey, that looks like it could be a Columbus Schwinn," so I counted the letters and figured it might be a Circuit or Prelude. Then I scoured the late 80s catalogs until I finally found what I thought was the matching paint job. I'm sure you'll probably have an easier time recognizing something cool in the garbage. |

Found this abandoned at a bus stop near work. The poor thing is mangled, not even sure if the frame is a loss or not. However, it is my first non-BSO find. |

Yeah, eyeballing the frame it appears ok aside from rust but that appears to be surface. Sadly the biopace chainrings are toast as is the spider on the drive side crank. FD is iffy, RD appears fine though hanger is likely tweaked.
Might be a cool frame to build up as an around town type. Probably far too large for my little self though. |
Looks like the chain wheels were crushed and bent. There are good parts on it, and if the frame is straight it is worth saving. The rd hanger can be easily re-aligned at a bike shop.

Sad to see such a thing happen to bio pace chainrings! May they rest in peace. |
Nice looking bike!

Picked up this 1981 Fuji S12-S LTD saturday but haven't really done a post on it yet. It's the oldest bike I own, and the only real road bike I own. Compared to the mountain bikes and hybrids I'm used to riding, this thing is great. It rides so smooth on the pavement and handles gravel just as well my 80's mtb, even at max tire pressure. The drivetrain looks pristine.
http://i.imgur.com/7LoGH3T.jpg The previous owner set the brakes really high and then threw on some bright red bar tape. Going to lower them and switch out for black later this week. I also would've preferred gumwall tires, but these black ones are brand new and work fine so that's okay I guess. http://i.imgur.com/XAHwhgO.jpg Full Suntour groupset. (Yes, I cleaned up that freewheel before riding.) http://i.imgur.com/8YMaMiu.jpg |
^^looks like a nice one. Classy fork there. The DRs look nice and prob'ly shift fine, when you upgrade you will drop some weight there.

Not saved from the dump, but I did save it from being a fixie. Happily, the previous owner hadn't cut anything off (or even removed the shifters) and had the derailleurs and big chainring in a bag for me. Here was the CL ad picture:
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7409/2...77474ab8_b.jpg So far I've just pulled off the rack and fenders and put on a new set of wheels with a freehub (fixies can be fun but probably not good for dialing in the fit). https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7144/2...397ecf1f_b.jpg Sometime in the next couple of weeks I hope to get around to putting a cassette and derailleurs on. |

This is the final build of a MIELE Columbus SL frameset that was literally on its way to the dump when it was given to me.
The bike came with tubular wheels with cyclo-cross tires on it. The frame has aero brake cable routing in the top tube and the top tube was cracked at the hole where the canle housing entered the front of the top tube. I had that tube replaced and then later when i acquired a Shimano Dura Ace AX groupset i had the frame modified to use it. The modifications included the removal of the downtube shifter bosses and the removal of the chainstay cable housing stop. The frame builder then made a front shifter boss and brazed it to the top of the downtube. He also brazed the cable stop to the top of the chainstay. The biggest thing was the front derailler. Cable guides were brazed to the top of the bottom bracket shell and behind the seat tube. neither the front or rear deraillers use any external cable housing. Shifting is very precise even though it's friction only. I absolutely adore the Dura Ace AX brake calipers. Braking is very positive and it's quite easy to lock up the wheels on dry pavement. I'm very lucky because I found a shop out in the country and they had NOS brake shoes and NOS Uniglide cassettes. At least they did have them. Now they live in my bicycle parts closet. I don't have the Dura Ace AX front hub and I hate mis-matched wheel sets so right now I'm running wheels with vintage Shimano 105 hubs. The rear is a freewheel hub. I fear that the Wright's saddle is on its last legs and I will be replacing it with a French made leather saddle next week. There's a 6mm hex socket cap that goes on the stem to hide the bolts. This makes fpr a very clean appearance. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7047/...dd00ccb2_o.jpgIMG_3781 by Miele Man, on Flickr Cheers |
http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/...psizosykju.jpg* I scored this Schwinn Le Tour II today for $10.* Very, very dirty.* Looks like it's been in a coal mine.* Might sell it to a buddy or make it a gravel bike. Also scored a nice shogun katana with tange infinity frame
