Catch of the day
 

I'm not into road bikes, but I had to grab this one. Sat on CL for a while, no pics and vague listing. I got the seller to email me some pics and we finally got together. Bike is a 1985 as far as I can tell Serial Number N5G5722. Came with the panniers, rack and front bag. Needs tires and a general cleaning, but I'm happy for $50. I'll probably keep the rack and bags and sell this one, as it's a bit small for me.

My catch of the day happened last week and is already posted elsewhere but I enjoy sharing pics so.... To some it was a good price but still a lot of money. I couldn't quite get over the fact that it is the top of the line with nearly a complete group and decent tires. The paint is not pristine but hey, its Italian!

For those interested in touring bikes, that is a fantastic catch! The bar-ends alone were worth it!

This guy came to me via the local coop. It seem to predate the convention where sturmey stamps the manufacture year on the shell of the hub. Not sure what I'll do with it, but I'll think of something.

I really do like the Raleigh, especially the shifter. That cruiser is a brute. It would make me want to be a paperboy in Springfield, (some state) USA.

SWEET green Super Course! I am drooling! that green, and Raleigh Coffee brown are two of my favorite bike colors. It's funny I keep going older on my road bikes. At one point I had MANY more 80's bikes, as in a majority. I am slowly drifting towards all mid sixties to mid seventies road bikes. It was the time of massive improvement in components. The dawn of "high end", IMHO. I do like 80's mtb's though, as they had their own evolution jumps.,,,,BD

1995 Marin Muirwoods - trash day find. My wife called me after dropping our daughter at school and was running errands and said there was a bike on the curb with trash and should she wait for me to come so nobody else could get it.. well, yes! I was unsure of what was waiting for me... but I think it was a good find.

The frame and components had a lot of mold build up, but no rust. Took it down to the frame, cleaned it and polished it. Then all new grease, new cables and other bits.

Stopped at the nearby Habitat for Humanity store. They had a shopping cart full of misc bike parts, I grabbed a lot of it. Nice Campy seat post, two Thudbuster seat posts, four saddles, a set of quill pedals, two handlebars. One handlebar came with RSX STI, pretty beat up but excellent hoods (OOP size, and its the size I use on most of my bikes). Sometimes in looking for bikes, you find parts instead. One of my theories is convert that pile of parts (or other find) to $$, and use that cash to boost the bike fund. Then its OK to pay full market for your next bike. Great solution to the old:"I sure wish I had the money to buy this deal".

A few people seem to not like Marins much, I love them I have a Palisades Trail for the same year and a Pine mountain frame. these are a very versatile bike that should take up to about 26 x 2.2, they make super touring bikes too. A great find considering the price

Picked up a set of Avid BB7 road calipers,,,,, finally! My drop bar 29 will get finished after a year sitting with the 9 speed Tiagra levers, cross levers, and wrap done. I was bummed about the cost of new calipers, and these must have popped up thirty seconds before I checked the CL bikes page. I am pumped to finally have them.,,,,BD

65er a dumb question from this side of the Pacific, but what brand is it? Is it made well? I have seen stuff other than Moulton, Raleigh, but did not purchase because I was unsure on whether they were a bit junky?

It is a vintage Dahon 4 (Mariner)... I plan to lighten it up a little and improve on a few of the parts but it is minty.

$10 tagsale find. Older Fuji Thrill. Shimano Exage Country group with biopace chainrings. This is the first time I've ridden these, and they're kinda cool. I figured I could do worse for $10 and at least scavenge it for parts, but the bike is totally ride worthy and fun, so I'll probably just clean it up and use it as a beater. I got a sweet surfboard too; it was funny walking back to my house, bike in one hand, board in the other!

This weekend I found a replacement for my stolen 86 Vitus 979. It's a rev.2 979 in white and 55cm size. It's been left out in the desert sun for a long time. But the condition of the frameset is good. The grub screw was rusty but turned out to be only surface rust. Next checked that the seat post and stem weren't seized. Both turn.

It was a mtb racer's training road bike that was provided to him by his sponsor. He said there is over 10,000 miles on the Vitus.
It has mostly a motley mix of Shimano parts....1055 series 105 hubs, calipers, RD, 7400 Dura Ace seat post and FD, 600 tricolor crank, and 6200 series brake levers and headset. Rims are Mavic MA2. Unknown stem that the black anodizing has faded, and a Modolo anatomic bar.

I paid $60 for it. I'm going to polish up the aluminum and paint it to my liking. It should be another fun project, and will make a fitting replacement to my gorgeous first Vitus.
