So I finally have something to post here. My DH saved two bikes today and I know almost nothing about them. One is a grand champion 3 speed and the other is mystery. I'm most interested in the big loose cruiser

That is such a cool head badge! The blur cruiser from Germany would make a comfortable ride.

Where do you see it bent? Maybe I'll keep the frame as wall art.

In your close-up photo, the downtube is visibly bowed.

Shrevvy 05-27-17 06:33 AM

I saw that and thought it was the fork that was bent. I'll take a look at it again.

Should be some cool projects there! Congrats Renn!:thumb:

I was able to get some of the grime off both bikes. The step through is a 1957 schwinn, I'm guessing a starlet from the coaster brakes. It's the 26 in rim version. The 3 speed Grand Champion cleaned up better then the schwinn. Both frames are for smaller people. I'll probably just flog them off on CL. I'm starting to get close to bike saturation.

Renngrrl, noglider is right it is an obsession, a slippery slope of an obsession , more addictive than drugs! A very rewarding hobby and also nice to ride a variety of bikes as the characteristics of each will be different.
It's called Bikeforums, but really it's a Bikeaholics anon meeting for all involved!

Odd build but the poor guy selling it had back problems. It is a Cervelo Superprodigy, it will be great with the spare Chorus group I have in the ol' parts bin.

The frame is bent as well as the fork. It was free. So, this has been a good learning experience. It was the first time tearing down a frame. Given that there is no value in the frame and fork, I didn't worry about damage. The stem is stuck as well, but the seat tube came out just fine.

It's not really a place to help each other control our addictions. ;)

3speedslow I know! I've found almost nothing about this bike except that it was definately english made.

The 1963 hub still shifts like butter despite the neglect. I spent some time on the chrome with 0000 steel wool over the weekend. Lot of rust still, I'll need to paint it which is sad because I like the down tube decal. I've seen people talk about doing OA baths. I need to find some instructions, OA supplier, and a wading pool.

The schwinn has the coolest farmer john seat. I'm hoping it can be rebuilt. It was repainted at one point and about .25% of the chrome is gone on the handlebars. I'm guessing the 26 x 1 3/8 rims can be replaced pretty easy. We're still trying to place the model.

Patience not perfection!!!

My most recent find came from a church rummage sale. Thanks to you guys I finally figured out what it is!!! All it had was the serial number and a badge plate no decals. I thought it was a super sport but, it ended up being a super le tour 2. It may no be at the high end but, it is on the endangered species list. From what I've gathered the frame was made in Chicago that in itself is a good thing!!! Yea!!! I accidentally threw away 2 plastic wheels for the brake cable adjuster at the time I thought were broken. Now I know what they were intended to do... !?$&%!!! And I tossed them. So be careful what you disguard as junk!!! Does anyone have a couple they could spare???

Oxalic Acid is sold as Wood Bleach in nearly every home supply and hardware store. There are several threads here on its use. For small parts, I prefer Evaporust.

jonwvara 05-30-17 02:09 PM

If you go about it right, you can immerse a whole frame in about a gallon and a half of Evaporust. It's the way to go, in my opinion.

Sweet! Any pics of the Huffy? I have a '62 made by Raleigh. You should post it in the Huffy thread. ;)

Maybe a 12-speed program would be closer to the truth?

Kill me now, people, PLEASE! I just picked this up today for a measly $25 and will be a keeper and rider to ad to my mtb collection:

Me again. lol
Picked up this poor Rockhopper Comp today for $20. Owner said he ordered a fork from EBay but it turned out not to have brake bosses(doh). Even his installation of the fork is bad. Everything isn't seated right. Lots of play. Rear wheel is wobbly. Mishmash of parts but the drivetrain and Diacompe headset are original. This will be a donor for my Ponderosa. Then I'll save the frame and dump the cheap fork. Heck it doesn't even compress!
