Dent in top tube made it very affordable. Titanium VooDoo.

This should be fun. Turn of the century Bertin "Fast Road".
All steel, maybe Columbus Thron. Mostly stripped, but the BB is Dura-Ace so it must have been a fine bike. Last month there were a couple for sale here, but my previous owner says this wasn't one of them. Very hard to find information https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...29a97104d9.jpg |
Not to be insulted but to some of us "elderly" folks, "turn of the century" means 125 years ago!

;-) (and it a QUARTER CENTURY ago) |
And today's prize doesn't look quite as nice as yesterday's Bertin, but it was $20.
23" '88 Cannondale ST400. Newish black 105 drive train upgrade, Tourney 7x3 brifters, dual pivot brakes, concave rear rim. Paint is a mess with a bunch of primer failure bubbling. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7b6165f2ed.jpg |
I swore I wasn’t going to buy any more 26” wheeled bikes after the Mt. Shasta Pachanga, but this one was really cheap and had almost new tires. How could I resist, especially given my love for vintage rigid mtb’s?
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c9987a7a5.jpeg Pic taken after I stripped all the parts and gave it a good clean. Just to, y’know, find out what we’re dealing with here…. A1993 Specialized Rockhopper Sport. In my size, too! Added genuine vintage Bullmoose bar just to see how it fits…. Ive had good luck selling bikes this spring, but somehow I have more now than when I started selling! |
Nice one, but what about that TT dent?

Could help with straightening the toptube if it has a bend. If it’s bent that might be addressable. Hardwood frame blocks are another alternative, rolling these may or may not hurt paint. |
Not Vintage, but I just snagged this early 2000's Team Fuji for quite cheap. Usually I have a strong preference for vintage 80's bikes, partially because they tend to be quite affordable, and partially because I just think they look good. In this case though, I think it will be cool to compare this bike versus my old '86 Team Fuji. I've done basically zero maintenance to my '86 team aside from wheel truing and tires, and it really could use a comprehensive service, but even so I'm always very satisfied by it every time I go for a ride, somehow it just feels "right." This newer variant is almost certainly a bit lighter, with its aluminum frame and carbon fork/seapost/crankset, but I'm curious to see if it has that same "Je ne sais quoi" that the older Team has.

That can be clamped, probably won’t hurt the paint. I use a stem with matching diameter and a removable faceplate. It won’t help the low but it will take down the highs

Those SR Four Sir seatposts (as on the Razesa above) are very nicely finished.

Every time I’ve taken the dog to be boarded this year I’ve passed it, sitting out in the rain in a junk pile behind a fence at a closed car detailing shop. Saturday afternoon I actually saw the owner loading up stuff. At $20 I probably paid too much, but I’ve wanted one of these for a long time. This one will get minimal refreshing - service the bearings, replace tires, saddle, chain and cables - and become a vacation beater bike, which still beats rusting away in a junk heap or being cut up for scrap.

Ridden hard and put away wet

81 voyageur before cleanup That Schwinn makes me appreciate shopping for bikes in New Mexico where the humidity is low, rainfall almost nonexistent and it's usually cool enough to ride those unblemished bargains you do find. Thanks for saving this bike from further oxidation. |
LOL, still not in as bad shape as the RM Cirrus I picked up which had been stored near the ocean. The hubs disintegrated when I pulled the wheels.

Very hard to find information https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...29a97104d9.jpg IIRC somebody tracked down info from a seller/importer and tho it wasn't necessarily this exact "Bertin" varient, it may have been but if not was one that was so close it differed only in color and brand displayed on the graphics. This example was determined to be a grade of Columbus tubing maybe a notch below Thron on the 'food chain" of Columbus tubing. Wish I had both better memory as well as better searching skills... |
That poor High Plains reminds me of the High Sierra I spotted at the salvage yard the other day. Tragic.

I would have hauled that home just for the fork, and crank, bars, stem, shifters, levers and HS. ;)
And really the frame looks in good shape except for the orange spray paint. I just keep going back to that fork... Can anyone direct me to a listing of Schwinn's hierarchy of mountain bikes? Am I correct in remembering that the Mirada was the bottom of the line? There's a half-decent Mirada mixte there. EDIT: It's a 1984, top of the line that year. The Cranks are Sugino TGT, 28, 38, 48, 175mm; I'd be at risk of kneeing myself in the chin. It came with bull a moose bar, fluted seat post, and a steel dork disk on Araya 7X wheels. |

You have a good point there; hubby says the Suntour Power Shifters and Diacomp brake levers are worth some coin. The cranks are Sugino.

I don't know the hierarchy but they are all similar at the Sierra level IMO and it doesn't matter to me, those forks are not that special but they are not fugly unibrows so I'm good, I have a couple I hope to swap in for fuglies, one is a very nice Stumpy that I can't wait to do and listen to the whinies cry about. :twitchy: |

These are really nice frames, and the 1991 catalog claims they are cromoly double butted. I’ve also seen claims that each paint job is unique. The spiderweb pattern is awesome! I have one I picked up at a thrift store for a ridiculously low price; it looked to have been ridden once or twice then hung on the ceiling for 35 years. Replaced all the components with upgraded 8 speed stuff from another cheap donor bike from the same thrift store; it’s a fantastic riding bike. You didn’t pay too much; these sweet old lugged frames are getting more scarce every day! Congrats on the save! Edited to add a pic of mine, post clean up/refurb: https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5ab8d0c64.jpeg |

And were you serious about the crank? You went above and beyond for me a couple years ago, and I'd be happy to send it to you, assuming it comes off. |
