so I ran into an old friend yesterday, and he said he was looking for a road bike, and asked if I could help. I asked him what his budget was (thinking he was going to say 50-100 bucks) and he said $400. I rubbed my hands together and laughed evilly. How often to you get to spend $400 on a bike guilt free?
Not even 24 hours later, I had found the bike (for $300):

kinda a mishmash of components, but still some really nice stuff, 600 rd and crank (and shifters?), a 105 fd, dura ace 7800 brakes (?!), a selle san marco rolls saddle (which I think may be the only original thing on the bike) and coolest of all, dura ace tubular wheels.
needs a new front tire, but other than that, the thing looks like its in perfect shape. I'm so tempted to keep it for myself, but its a little small and really does fit my friend better.

my new to me Tommaso
All Camapgnolo Super Record Gruppo
Columbus SLX Frame
Just my size & in decent condition. I like the custom paint job. It needs a good scrub down & some new bar wrap & brake hoods.
My first Italian Racer
not my last for sure!

Major score at the local thrift store today. The bikes are always hanging in the back and as we walked in I could see that there was some type of road bike. I got about 5 feet from it before I knew I had to have it.
Bridgestone RB-1.....$51 out the door. Bike is perfect, doesn't even need a tune up. Came with SPD clipless pedals and computer, matching 105 components and has very little scratches. The ride quality is up there with my modern Trek 1500.

A couple of weeks ago I picked up matching his and hers 1973 Columbia Tourist cruiser bikes. I spent hours and hours restoring these and truly could not be happier with them. They are a blast to ride and my wife LOVES hers. I'm still polishing the cable clips so bear with me on the zip ties!

Univega Custom Maxima
I picked up a Univega Custom Maxima today from CL. It looks like it's a pretty low end bike with "Light High Tension Steel Tubing" and steel Araya rims. Surprisingly it is in very good shape. The only scratches were on the top tube where it looked like it leaned against something in shed or garage for years. It even still has both Univega Grand Touring tires with all the tread still on them. There is some surface rust on the little chrome bits. The bike has zero braze-ons for shifters, bottles, even the cable guides near the bottom bracket are clamp-ons. It's pretty heavy, but should polish up nice. Here are a couple of photos.
The bike as I got it

The drive train

The only damage I could see

The whole thing cost me $28.

That's after 15 minutes, I'll probably go at it one more time before I put them back on the bike.

My father came across this bike a while ago at a second hand shop. Has this bike a model name and how old might it be? I think he paid 10 dollars, but the neuvo record came on later. Any info about this bike would be great!

PB Blaster penetrating oil is probably the best on the planet. Most auto parts stores carry it.

WD 40 is for drying out distributor caps and a light rust inhibitor that evaporated quickly when exposed to the sun. It is not good for much else other then to get tar off stuff.

Takin this one to SB tomorrow with me on the amtrak.
dude just had an ad that said "univega bicycle"
i emailed him, he responded with pics, went over, offered him 40 and was sold
Its a 90's Alpina Uno (Lawlee) w/full exage system that works flawlessly, just gave it a quick wipe down and air and i was good to go! It came with new tires + was recently tuned up

Rust buster
I've had success with a "soft" brass wire electrician's brush and a combination of Naval Jelly and foaming Grill cleaner. It took the rust, grease and grime right off.
Importantly, I have only used it on metal surfaces. Don't use naval jelly and a wire brush on paint you want to keep.

Bridgestone Kabuki with Companion Seat $3.00
I found this bike today at a garage sale for $3.00 and besides the low price and funky name Bridgestone Kabuki, it had the coolest toddler seat that I could not resist - the companion seat. Do you think I would get a ticket if I rode my 2 yr old on this seat? Needs a chain and a bit of cleaning up - everything works great though. The seat post is fixed to the frame, stationary? Strange old bike. The guy said he bought it in 1980 or something like that. The tires are a bit crusty - like they sat for about 30 years, but still hold 40 psi. Wheels tru, all parts in working order - just need to drive into Portland and pick up an old bike chain somewhere, unless of course somebody wants to send me an old chain. Also picked up a city slicker tire - brand new - for a dollar at an estate sale - owner died and they were selling all his stuff.

2 raleigh kodiak touring bikes. 23" and 25" frames. These are used but were top of the line back in the mid-eighties. They were designed for heavy touring, and have 18 speeds and have friction shifting. Will sell separately $75 each call xxx-xxx-xxxx
* Location: sedalia
* it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

Got them both for $130 and they are in great shape for their age, I am sooooo psyched!

1) New 27" x 1 1/4" tires for about $5 each + S/H @ Niagara Cycle Works...look the tires over good, might still have some life left in them. Still would order the new tires, and keep the old ones as spares if they did have some life left in them (gumwalls not cracked and dried, no cuts or chunks out the black treaded area...still tread on the black treaded area.
2) Retape the handlebars
3) Lose that "suicide" kid seat before somebody gets hurt with it
4) Look for letter decals on the frame (probably on the top tube under that "dangerous" baby seat...yea, I'm worried about it) indicating model (SSD = Super Speed had bolt-on steel wheels, HT= Hill Topper...).
5) Decent (entry-level, but what expression doesn't mean much to many riders. Nice for commuting/touring/recreational) bike at a ridiculously low "Merry Christmas Ho Ho HO" price
6) The name isn't that funky....the bike is a Bridgestone, which a translation of the name of the fellow who started the tire company it's a part of... he was a cycling enthusiast like the fellow at Panasonic...ibikes also came into the U.S. under the C. Itoh name. I think the guy who runs Rivendell came out of Bridgestone. Think mid-to-late 1970s. Incredibly nice catch for the price of one gallon of gas...ride 20 miles on those tires & the bike paid for itself!!!

No bikes, but I was running a workshop at a local library yesterday. They were having a book sale, and since I was early, I went out to check it out, and found the folowing:
Bicycling Magazines Guide to Upgrading your Bike, by Frank Berto. I've been looking for a copy of this one for a while.
Sloanes Complete Book of All-Terrrain Bicycles by Eugene Sloane. Not unlike his volumes on bikes from earlier.
Guide to Bicycle Repair and Maintenance No author, McGraw-Hill home improvement series. Excellent, step by step diagrams, including complete teardown and re-assembly of Shimano and Sturmey Archer three speed hubs. Great.
Clymer Publications' Fix Your Bicycle More great exploded views and stuff like that.
Two dollars and fifty cents for the lot. Would have paid that for the Berto book alone. I'm a complete sucker for old bike books...

Hello I removed this bike from a skip (dumpster) and at that time it was blue coloured and is a Triumph team leader model. I had it sandblasted and powder coated. I use this bike most of the time about 100 miles a week. Cheers.
