The brakes on this one gave me fits for some reason. I eventually got them sorted and she's a smooth rider.
New tires, tubes, cables, bartape, saddle and a NOS Shimano FE front derailleur. I really like the colors on this bike. This shade of blue with the yellow bartape really lights it up.

The first week of September the community nearby has a large yard sale. It's usually good for two very good finds (road bikes) and 3 - 6 decent finds (road and mtb). This year I'm going on a cruise with my wife (no kids!) that week.
Oh well, at least my community has it's sale two weeks later. This is where I pick up enough bikes to flip and replenish my bike fund.

This one came from the Salvation Army on my way home from work today. I don't think the bike itself is much to shout about an SR Gran Touring made from "High Tension tubing". But it does have some very dirty but functional Shimano 600 components.

I figured the components were worth the $38 price tag. I rode it around the block and it rides nice, just a little too small for me.

^In my neck of the woods... not so much. The frame looks lower end, probably cro-molly with hi-ten stays and forks? The saddle is, well... beat too and when your charging that much I think it matters.

I guess the new wheels and such help, and it is in Boston so it might not be that bad price wise.

The polishing is the fun part. Although, the Fuji's crank didn't need that much work. Turns out the crank is actually chrome plated aluminum. :eek: It just needed a good cleaning and a little Blue Magic. :thumb:

For that money it should have a good seat, hot market or not, and the half wrapped drop bars seems silly from a practical standpoint.

No harm in letting the dump guy know you are looking for old steel bikes. If it's a official garbage dump, I guess he's not allowed to let you have stuff but if nobody is looking, he might. Being nice doesn't do any harm. In fact, letting a girlfriend do the asking will often yield better returns, go figure why. If it's a scrapyard, you ask them to put 'em aside and pay 5-20 bucks for each good bike, you might be onto something.

I couldn't imagine really buying a bike like that, but I could imagine building it with leftovers. At $225, it could almost cost that much to build with any halfway decent frame to start with. I'd prefer a front brake if it's fixed gear, though.

^ generally it's the wheelset that is ridiculously expensive on the fixed gear. I got a really crappy one for $110 and considered myself lucky. If it has deep-Vs that's what you're paying for (and hipster cred, of course....:) )

I haven't poked my head here in a while - just haven't been buying and flipping bike like I used to. I've got three in the garage right now, and just finished this one tonight.

It is a Schwinn Mirada, and I picked it up about a year and a half ago. It was just so filthy that I really didn't feel like fooling with it, as I had a lot of easier bikes to work on. So, it went into the shed and I forgot about it. :o

Turns out, all it needed was a good cleaning, new tires, and a FD adjustment. About 1-1/2 hours total in labor. It is an interesting bike - 4130 frame, Shimano Light Action drive-train, Sugino triple, fenders, and bolt-on Araya wheels with a 5 speed freewheel. there is a small sticker on the chain stay that indicates it was made by Giant for Schwinn - go figure.

It is a big, beefy thing, and rides smoothly - I toured the neighborhood this evening on a check-out run. It will make someone an excellent paved path, about-town, or commute bike.

It cleaned up pretty well, and is off to CL momentarily.

1982? schwinn suburban, was in pretty okay condition, had to clean it up a bit and swap some pieces with a 80's schwinn traveler that is in pretty bad shape. not sure what to do with the rest of the traveler, heh. would like to make it look a bit nicer, but not sure where to start

That Mirada is pretty cool looking in a mixte meets mountain bike look. Are those the original bars and thumb shifters? I can't believe how fast you can knock those out, especially with how clean it is.
