I have too much going to figure out a good thread for each thing, so I decided to start a "project update thread". Please feel free to use it to give updates on your projects if you wish. Pics are required though

I'll start out with my Gitane. I took it out for a spin today to the LBS.




The idea with this bike was basically to build a bike out of French parts.There are some campy bits and a brooks pro thrown in for good measure. Somewhere along the way it became semi inspired by '40s-'50's TDF bikes, hence my take on the dual handlbar mounted bottles. I also kept DT shifters on it to keep the old school look. I'm normally prefer bar ends but I'm going to try to make myself like them.

All of that said after taking it for a ride today, I found the ride, well boring. It just didnt really speak to me. I also think I need a little big longer stem as I feel a little cramped when in the drop. Maybe I can just move the seat back a little bit.

The funny thing is that I put all this work into the Gitane building it up from scratch, and I much prefer to the ride and fit on this bike, my '77 Motobecane Grand Jubilee which I just picked up basically as is a few weeks ago for just over a hundred bucks!



Funny how that works out. I'm probably going to fool around with the Gitane a bit more to see if I can improve the fit and ride a bit, but if that doesnt work it's going on the chopping block.

I'm rebuilding my favorite weekend go fast club ride bike. Here's what it used to look like:

This is my older frame modern parts bike.
powdered celeste-ish. I painted the lugs and some of the panto bianchi lettering white although its hard to make out in the pic. Decals are from the Austrlian decal guy on ebay. I think they're from a 70's Bianchi specializersomethingerother. I liked how they looked. Campy SR headset and brakes. It's waiting on some more parts then it will be a mix of Campy 10 Sp ergo. mostly chorus. I really just need a BB, and front and rear der's, and to relace the rear rim onto the centaur freehub. As soon as some funds show up I hope to order the rest of the parts.

I can't wait to ride this bike again...

Then we have the Alan Record, maybe Super Record. It's going to get friction shifting Campy SR and probably bar ends. I'm sorry but shifting DT shifters are larger frames just isnt fun. I love friction shifting as much as the next guy (maybe more), but I just cant really hang with DT shifters on a bike I really ride all the time.



I'm waiting for some wider bars, campy brake levers, and non recessed nut brakes of some sort then i can finish buiiding it. I don't plan on keeping the bars or levers that are on it around.

So that's basically what I have going on project-wise right now. Well that and working on my house, working my regular job, doing side work, getting ready for a baby to be born, etc etc. You get the idea

Machin Shin......What cha got goin' on there? Looks like a rather sizeable order from VO maybe? Are those the VO gold canti's I spy? I've been thinkin' about gettin' a set for a build in the works. How do they look? Nice finish?

Lots of shiny bits from VO, Rivendell, eBay, Wallbike, LooseScrews, Harris Cyclery and others. As for the project, you'll have to wait a bit until the frame is ready. Then I'll document the build with its own thread.

The gold canti's are nice; there are a few things I'd change about them, but they should work out nicely. The gold color is very rich and the brakes have a pebbled texture to them.

My '60 Legnano Roma is now roadworthy but after a few rides I plan on some changes.

I do not like the bend of the Ambrosio bars. I ride Cinelli 64's or the modern equivilent Deda 215's on all my bikes that get ridden. So I'm looking for a Cinelli chrome steel stem and period 64's to replace the Ambrosio combo.

I also hate the bar-ends. I'm sure they would work fine with modern cable housings or routed out at the hooks, but I do not like that look, and do not want to use non original housings. But as is, the pull is just too hard to get into the low gears. I've messed with them a lot and know I have them as good as it will get.

So I'm going to switch to DT shifters. That way when I change the bar and stem I can leave the original stuff intact with the levers and bar-ends and keep them in storage to put back on in the future if I decide to sell or trade it.

I also have a modded B-17 coming to replace the Pro. Might have to go with red wrap on the new bars. I was on the fence with the green (which arrived blue-er than it looked online). I kind of like it but have gotten some hate over it as well. Not that I usually cave to bike-nerd peer pressure, but in this case they may be right.

Other than that it's a pretty nice riding bike. Way too slack for my taste, but solid and smooth. For some reason it's a lot more comfortable to ride down in the hooks mototring along in a big gear. It feels cramped riding on the tops, which is weird as the top tube is 1 cm longer than I usually ride and the stem is my normal 10cm. It may just be the saddle which tends to have me sliding forward. I'm not used to riding a Brooks. It seems like it has enough tilt back but? Anyway since it's getting changed out I'll deal with it later.

Here's a 1977 Jack Taylor tandem I'm building up for a couple of close friends. I should get it done this weekend, if everything comes together. The frame looks unridden and weighs only 42lbs in its current incarnation. Still need to add barend shifters, brake levers and pedals.
