Bummer

The perils of riding vintage.

On its "first" ride too. I was about 15 miles out. At least I found all of the parts on the road. And I just traded my spare Brooks. Anyone have a 50s/60s Italian saddle to trade/sell? I have some, if not NOS, perfect Sheffield pedals and some other interesting bits.

Bikes: Mostly English - predominantly Raleighs

Definitely a bummer. Hope you're unharmed.

I'm good. And faster. I am somewhat lighter in the wallet.

Ouch. Looks like it could have hurt in more ways than one. How was your ride back?

I am about ready to retire my Brooks Competition for fear of that sort of failure.

I was off the saddle or I had my butt way back on the saddle. Harder on the legs but not that bad of a ride home.

Glad that you and the boys are OK. I now feel vindicated for all of the years I have ridden with the spare saddle strapped to my helmet.

My loss this week was much easier to take. On my Guerc's maiden voyage the center post nut fell off of my rear Athena calipers and disappeared - that distintive "bullet" kind

May your saddle rest in peace.

Incidentally, when saddles break like this, it doesn't usually hurt. One moment, you're riding as usual, the next, you're sitting an inch lower for no apparent reason. Simultaneously, you hear a couple of metallic clanks from the saddle nose and assorted parts falling onto the pavement.

It only hurts once you realize what just happened.

Bikes: Crap. The box is not big enough...

I've never seen one fail that way before. Looks like a virus or something.

Crap. I've got four old ones in service.

They dry out. I have Brooks saddles that are 35+ years old and are fine, having been both treated & stored away from excessive dry heat, and then there's this 50-year-old that started to tear the minute I sat on it.

Yes they do get rather dry over the years. I learned that the hard way when replacing a rivet on the right corner of a Brooks Pro. The leather just tore like it was paper. Glued a leather patch underneath to contain the damage and then pounded the rivet. A good coat of Obenauf's, and she's holding so far.

Must be some fine trick - riding with a saddle attached to your helmet. How do you steer with your arms in those long-sleeve coats with the buckles in their backs?
