A Happy Mother's Day Project

In between taking care of festive activities for my wife and mother-in-law today, I slapped together this Sekai from parts that have been hanging around in my basement and needed to be put to good use. Frameset is Tange Champion #5 Cromo. The wheels are 26 x 1 1/4"/EA1 rims w/ a rear VeloSteel coaster-brake hub, a front Sturmey Archer hub, and Dunlop White Sprite tires. I had built these wheels for my '48 Claud Butler, but I modified the Claud a few weeks ago w/ a 700c wheelset. Crankset is a TA 3-pin w/ 42-t ring, Shimano sealed BB, Atom pedals, Luxe bars, and no-name stem, Gipiemme 26.4mm seatpost and Brooks Pro saddle that was on my PX-10. Front rack is a 12-pack rack from Leah Stargardner, which has been looking for a bike to rest on. Total weight is around 24 lbs. The rear wheel needs truing, but otherwise it's good to go.

Here I am in action on the bike, photo taken by my soon-to-be-7 son, who had just helped me mow the backyard weeds, our Mom's day present for my mother-in-law, whose house is behind ours.

And here's the photographer, who wants a BMX bicycle for his birthday:

Neal & Little Neal,

Wonderful pictures and story!!! (Not a bad looking city bike either.)

If I spot a decent BMX frame at the dump should I bring it home for you and the half pint?

Try to keep Anakin on the right side of The Force, please.

I bought the mother of my children a Nitto Dirtdrop stem (eBay) for her newly-refinished pearl-white Specialized Expedition frame. Of course, I bought myself a 2-bolt Campagnolo seatpost, and a Sugino track-length BB spindle. But she got a bike ride and brunch, too, along with my undivided attention.

Sounds fair to me, Charles! Hmm, you remind me that I need to install the rear-view mirror on my wife's commuter bike, but I'm not a total cad because I did take her car in for inspection on Saturday (and then cleaned it out, too).

Thanks for the offer, Bob, but given my timeline I think I'm likely going to be buying something new this week or taking my chances with the many BMX offerings on Boston's CL. My son's name is Clay, btw, which is a family name on my wife's side.

Good looking kid, but why was I thinking his name is Red?

Clay deserves an all chrome BMX! Gives it more of a vintage look!
