Bad sound from my hub?

I've been riding on this hub for while - I just did a two day ride (well, for anyone else, probably a one day ride...) - but the last month or two I think it's been making a funny noise. A bad noise. I rebuilt it, and the cone on the hub has a rough spot about 3 ball bearings long. Is it a goner? Can I just keep riding it? As I said, I did two days over horrible hills and it did fine. I'm planning another 5 days on Sunday.

It's a nice old high flange Campy hub. Radial spoked, Fiamme rim. I'm 99% certain the noise come from the hub once every revolution - but it's hard to tell. It makes no noise or vibration when I just spin it. I have to be riding the bike, and even then not always.

Any ideas?

Edit:

Wow, I just rebuilt an old Normandy wheel I had hanging around, just in case I decided to swap out at the last minute. What a difference. I just got the campy stuff for the bling, and because you can always rebuild it and get parts for it - but wow, it sure is put together better. Just spinning it in your hands, you can feel it. This Normandy doesn't even feel right, compared.

Occasionally you can find NOS races for Campy Record hubs on eBay; the cones are there almost every week. Rebuild and ride on. Make sure the axle is not bent.

Do you think it's safe to keep riding it? It sounds like the wheel is hitting the brake pad just a little. About that loud.

Now it's the cone, pretty soon the race, which is harder to find and more expensive to replace.

My mistake - it's on the race, not the cone. Damage done. It's just a slight indentation - looks like a bearing wore a grove in it in this one spot. Like I said, it's about three bearings long.

Even though no one wanted to give me a seal of approval, I decided to take in on my tour anyway. You only live once!

Bikes: One brand-less build-up, and a Connondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra Disc. A nicer bike than I need, but it was a good deal, so... ;-)

The Campy races are replaceable. You'll want to replace the bearings and cones as well, because once any of those starts "spalling" (the technical term for what you're seeing), little bits of hardened metal are floating around in there chewing things up.

The cups cones and bearings are "case hardened", only the very surface of the metal is hardened, to maintain some "give" in the metal. If the metal were fully hardened, it would be too brittle. Wear through the hardened part, though, adn the "chewy center" wears away quickly.
