I will not take advantage of people who appear to be resource limited. I have, many times, warned sellers that they are asking too little. The most memorable was with an older lady selling used horse saddles - $25.00 each. There was a military saddle from WW1 and a lovely hand tooled, and I mean fancy tooling, saddle complete wish silver badges fitted with that green stone from Mexico (turquoise).

I warned her that she might want to ask more and offered to place them on the internet for her, providing she would accept phone calls regarding the saddles. She agreed and I helped. I also warned her that her prewar something or other step through with skirt guard was worth more than she was asking. I did not buy the bike but I advised her to add a hundred dollars to the asking price. She did.

Some time later she called me and gave me a lovely antique bottle that I had admired when at her place. Now that made my day! I still have the bottle.
Exactly!

My change of heart came in Buenos Aires.

I found a Super Record equipped Columbus SPX Privatera—a sort of Latin American Marinoni—on Mercado Libre—the Argentine equivalent of Craigslist—for the competitive price of ~$300USD.

The owner lived in a particularly poor suburb of the city.

I took the train out to meet him. Rough neighbourhood. For the whole walk over my shoulders were up around my ears. All houses were set up with barbed wire fences and barred windows. Buenos Aires downtown can be hairy, but this was a different beast.

When I arrived at the seller's house, he was welcoming and warm. We had coffee together with his son, and spent twenty minutes exchanging stories. Though it was five years ago, I still remember it vividly.

He treated me like a neighbour. I left the transaction feeling like I'd made a friend, and I hope he did too.

I know character, age, and interest vary from person to person, but I think this is the right ideal to maintain when you go into a trade. The potential upside is much greater than $50 in your pocket.

Fossil watches are crap, IMO. I was travelling and forgot said Timex. The only watch place I could find expediently was a Fossil shop. Since then, the trim for the lettering in the crystal has fallen apart so that there are little pieces floating in the face. Furthermore, they charge for the service of screwing off the back to insert a new battery (not pay for the battery). The tool to do this is not a standard piece of kit. (I've since learned to do it with a pair of jeweler's screwdrivers.)

I've never owned a Tag or Gucci, and probably never will, but IMO Fossil watches and service are crap.
Okay then.

I once had to negotiate the re-plan of a very large project - numerous stakeholders, numerous egos, numerous priorities, new schedule, new sequence, more costs, new risks. When I had a basic plan laid down and was working on the details nobody was happy. I began to, literally, tell them "When everyone is equally mad at me then we'll have the right plan." At first they'd look at me like was pretty strange but after a while "the light came on" and they began to understand and, each, give a little and wiggle a bit and things started to fit. About the time everyone was equally mad at me they were, actually, reasonably content and they all approved the new plan.

Same idea but coming at it from a different angle.

That looks like an old Shimano disc brake. My neighbor gave me an old low end Masa with the same braze-on for the caliper.
on second look, I think that is a Masa.

Almost the lowest of the brand. Swiss threaded. Tons of chips to the chainstays. It's got "ready to ride" in its favor, depending on whether it was actually serviced, it's worth about half the ask at best.

That Bianchi is the better buy, four times over.

I know from 1980 on the lugs have the classic 'T' cutout, so this would be a 1979 or earlier, but this lug pattern on the headtube doesn't look like what I'd expect. The downtube sticker also looks like a modern, raised-edge version, but maybe not. The sticker pattern does seem consistent with a late '70s and very early 1980s Tommasinis. Lots of good Campy pieces on it. Definitely worth checking out.
59cm Tommasini Road Bike

I'm local to that Tommasini, and I've checked it out a long time ago. The frame is a major rust bucket, with a very poor job of touching up the paint. It's been neglected, and will need plenty of work. The parts other than the hubs are probably worth $250 or so, the wheels might be worth $80-100. It's been on CL here in Northern San Diego for the better part of a year. Seller fairly quickly dropped the asking price from $700 down to $550 but has stayed on $550 for at least 6 months. I've seen far better kept up Tommys here in S.D. for under $800 that I've felt were much better deals - and BTW, they all sold a lot faster too.

That would explain the crummy photos and the incredibly long time on CL. Thanks for the info.
