So I went and got this one...

It's not a Colnago. It is a very nice Viner I think (small star on inside of fork leg, distinctive lug cutout that matches Viner I've seen on the bay. Lots of chrome. Maybe SL. Good cond. all the way around. Perfect size.

I've been watching this bike for a while. But the lack of original paint, obviously not a Colnago, and the huge stash of projects I already had in hand, I passed. The parts alone made the frameset just about free.

Looks like a fun project!

He was a really nice guy. He seemed to think that it was a bike made by Colnago for someone else, maybe even Columbus (the dove is panto/embossed on the spoon at the top of the seat stay, and the fork crown), but was pretty clear that he wasn't sure. The paint actually might be original and is pretty good. This might have been the economy Viner racer, called the Record, so they may have used stickers to save money.

[h=2]1983 Univega Grand Turismo City Commuter Touring Bike - $125 (Chapel Hill)[/h]

A classic 21" lugged chrome moly touring bike from the early 1980's. I used it to commute back and forth to work for many years in Vermont, but its just gathering dust hanging in the garage since moving to NC. It's always been kept out of the weather, with no rust, and the only damage being paint chips from general use. I had added an upright mountain bike stem, flat bars, thumb shifters, and mountain bike brakes back in the mid-1980's for better visibility. It also has custom turned aluminum sealed hubs and Weinmann 27" concave rims. It could use a good cleaning, greasing, new tires and a home where it can run the roads again. Call Rick at 919-three five six-5021.

This is significantly rare enough that I don't know the value of the frame. The 600 groupset would part out at about $150. The wheels about the same. That makes the frame + bits about $400.

Beautiful bike - I LOVE the seat cluster. I'm also not familiar with the builder, but I like what I saw in the photos. My gut says that this is another one of those bikes that has a lot more value than the market will reflect...I think his asking price is ambitious for a 62cm Frankenstein build. This is another one where it just takes one buyer who understands it...but finding that buyer might be difficult. My gut says that in an open auction starting at .99, this would sell for about $400 and get parted out unless the seller got very lucky.

I don't think it's a bad buy for someone who wants a quality bike, but I also don't think someone should go into it thinking about reselling. Valuing small name stuff like this is always very hard.

+1. That's what I was thinking. To my eye, the entire drive train is 6200 series. The brakes are DC NGC or the like. Seatpost, stem, and bars are Italian. To me, it's less Frankenstein and more 80s --- kind of a vintage build based on the parts available. Someone didn't want to spring for Campy or DA on this, but still wanted a nice riding bike.

EDIT: My eyes are going. That crankset is DA.

Yeah - I didn't mean Frankenstein in a derogatory sense, it just doesn't help value. Most people want "gruppos", even though very few of us in that period cared about such things come ride day. When you broke something and had to pay for it...you looked for value. I really like the bike...and if I rode a 62cm, and this spoke to me, I'd probably bid. I think the paint/chromed lugs look terrific - sort of Cinelli'esque in effect.

I agree Aaron.

This is right up my alley, but unfortunately too large.

Would look great with a Chorus gruppo I have, especially with the Record/Ambrosio wheelset I just had built.

BTW There is a Davidson on ebay that is heading for deal of the week status.

I used to see bikes in different plants and factories back when I first started driving trucks. One day in some backwater down in Kentucky just joking around I asked a guy "hey how long do you have to work here before you get a bike" figuring I would get an answer like "Oh they just around and you grab one when you need it". Instead of that he looked me dead in the eye and said "I've been here 10 years and don't have one yet"

That's funny! Had a guy on my route give me a Schwinn Heavy Duty, Rudy, And had several people ask me if that was Rudy's bike, from Rheem manufacturing.

1991 Bridgestone RB-1. 59cm. This bike is incredible. Lightweight steel tubing. And it's twitchy enough to stay comfortable in a peleton. Ishiwata 022E Tubing. Sugino GX crank. Nitto Technomic Deluxe stem with 44cm Nitto Noodle handlebar. It's a blast to ride. And it's fun to own something that makes the carbon crowd envious. Just being honest.
