Loose Ball Bearings--where to buy
After reading this thread, https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/564398-bottom-bracket-bearings.html, and Glenn's, I think I'm ready to try rebuilding the Raleigh Sports I bought for my wife. I have question about ball bearings, though: will any Grade 25 loose ball bearing do? The machine shop supervisor here said he can get me whatever size I want, G25 chrome steel bearing balls, no problem.
Will they work for bikes, or do I need to look elsewhere?
Thanks,
Gary

As long as they are the right size they will work. Get the highest grade possible. Good tolerance in between bearings mean a smooth running hub or bottom bracket.

I don't know what grades he has but this guy is here in the SF Bay. He told me he would ship locally for $6.00.

If I was working on my Colnago, I would use grade 25, just because.

I see bikepartsusa.com has good prices.
For wordsmiths who prefer to use the correct term, we're talking about bearing balls, not ball bearings. That is, we're talking about the balls that go into bearings.

Loosescrews.com has very good prices for 100 count bags. I keep some of several sizes around so I can do front and rear hubs, bottom brackets, pedals and headsets. That way the shipping doesn't eat my lunch.

These are getting a bit hard to find locally. None of the LBS had the ball bearings. I ended up buying 200 5/32" chromed steel balls Grade 25 last week from a local bearing supply house. They did not stock the loose balls but got them overnight. About $12.
