Someone mentioned Sachs above. I have a AW and a Sears branded Sachs, both 60's vintage.

The Sachs looks like a higher quality build, from the outside, are the innards similar, like a copy of the SA?

There are many internal differences such as the Sachs having three planet gears and the SA having 4. This is the reason for the smaller diameter of the Sachs Torpedo hub I believe. They were independent designs. Numerous companies did clone or license manufacturing rights to the SA AW hub but Sachs was not one of them.

Also so far as I know the Sachs never had the droppping out of engagement problem from high gear. No parts are interchangeable between SA and Sachs 3 speed hubs that I am aware of.

Neither did the BSA IGH have the false neutral I have read. It was a licensed copy of a pre AW SA 3 speed hub design so SA knew how to prevent this even before the AW hub was introduced.

BTW are you sure the Sears is a Sachs hub? Steyr Daimler Puch in Austria made SA clone hubs and parts are supposed to be interchangeable with SA AW hubs. Sears had a business relationship with them and carried Puch motorcycles for quite a while.

From my standpoint, especially how I ride, the AW is the best choice. I haven't had to stand on the pedals of my 3 speed in years-- the cog swap and the large frame basically put me in a position where I can put out enough climb to get up the local hills. I'm not in the mountains, but do have some fair hills around.

AW parts are generally decent quality and easy to find-- a benefit of having a hub model made for decades. I'd love to branch out into some other, older hubs like the model K or drum brake hubs, but the AW works fine for me. The only time or two I had it drop involuntarily into neutral was due to poor adjustment on my part when I first got the hub. Once adjusted and lubed I've had no problems.

I recently bought an old PUCH 3-speed from the early 1970's. It had a Shimano Nexus 3-spd. hub as original equipment. I thought this a bit odd. But as parts were scarce, I swapped it out for a Sturmey-Archer AW hub.

During the early 70s bike boom the traditional bike parts manufacturers could not keep up with demand so builders started sourcing parts from all available sources, including Japan. That was the period when Shimano and Suntour started selling internationally per my understanding. Also why the same model in the same year could be found with different components sometimes. They used what they could get.

It is Shimano's changing their design and making proprietary parts and tools - every week it seemed like - and the next year it all changed again. And they had no support for the customer's who would be in need of parts somewhere down the road. This was the main reason why we all hated Shimano.

They've improved over the years, but they still pull this crud to a lesser degree.

They are still pulling it. They make a hub but don't sell in a certain country. I needed a generator hub that would take a roller brake. Shimano USA had one listed on their website. We inquired and were told it didn't exist (vaporware?) a week later it was gone from the US website. Shot an email to WorkCycles in Amsterdam, NL. He was more than happy to sell me a Shimano generator hub that would take the roller brake AND suggested that I use the larger roller brake vs the puny one that came stock on the bike.

Shimano doesn't even list the brake that came on that bike as being available in the US, but it was spec'd and sold on a bike for the US market.

Another current example is the Shimano 7 speed IGH. Offered in the USA on a number of bikes but not even listed on the Shimano USA web site as a product.

This one?

I have a Nexus 7 on my Redline R530, which is the one I wanted a dyno/rollerbrake hub for.

Shimano began building three-speed hubs in 1957. Their first international outing was exhibiting this hub at the 1961 New York Toy Show (the Interbike of 50 years ago).

FYI: Jtek makes a bar end shifter for the Sturmey 8-speed.

Apparently added to the Shimano America web site since I last looked.
