Shipping damage and weird panto's on frame

Hi, this is a follow-up thread on a bike i posted a while back,

So I received this pinarello today, sadly it had been damaged in shipping,

How bad is it? Can it be fixed?

Also..its kinda weird,

It has DEMARZO or DE MARZO written under the BB and on the front fork it has a star engraved. There are lots of columbus text and logos engraved on it.

It may be possible to cold-set that dropout, but there may be a risk of cracking it as well. I can't predict one or the other.

Was it insured? You should be able to get them to pay a professional to bend ("cold-set") the dropout.

If they break it or determine that it is no longer safe to ride, it should then be replaced (insurance payout)

+1 Bending it back has a high likelihood of breaking it. I would not predict one way or another.

+1 Time to file a claim. Paypal or shipping. Look for any shipper to deny it due to poor packing.

was it packed properly? the packer should have screwed a plastic or wooden block between the dropouts as reinforcement. i agree with the others, be prepared for shipper to claim improper packing.

Dropouts are made of mild steel. I think you can bend it back.

Has the frame been repainted?

Bikes: Crap. The box is not big enough...

franklin frames in ohio can replace the dropout for about $100. maybe you can find someone closer. I'm struggling with the idea that this is a pinarello, though.

I'd try straightening the DO with the Park tool. If it snaps, then have someone replace the drop, as Luker suggests.

Oh, and I must echo his sentiment - this looks like no Pinarello I've ever seen.

I know, its a weird one

Im trying to track down the background information on this frame.

Found a clue in the lugwork that matched custom lugs that columbus made, from the start I thought it was a minimax but to use those custom lugs you have to hand ovalize the tubing (which takes a really good builder)

where are the weird 'pantos'? a good mechanic should be able to realign that. the key is to do it slowly, just move it a few micrometers at a time. or heat it with a MAPP torch. IMHO if the shipper did not have something stiff (and old hub, wooden dowl, rolled up cardboard) between the dropouts it was not packaged securely.

^agreed, the shipper did not brace the rear, (or the brace fell off) so it was not properly packed and/or very roughly handled.
I agree it's not a Pinarello, but looks like a very good frame from the early '90s (Cinelli spoiler BB shell and unicrown fork) and you say it has ovalized tubes? Whatever a DeMarzo is it probably ain't too shabby...more and better pics would be nice.

The weird pantos im talking about is the columbus SLE written on the headtube (never heard of SLE tubesets) the star on the front fork and de marzo on the bb (de marzo as i understand it means the month of march in italian)

It got its original color and all the pinarello decals have been on it for what it looks like a really long time.
Im still hoping its a custom/one-off pinarello

Ditto. It's hard to tell how badly it's bent without seeing more of the frame for reference.

Precisely. That, and the fact that he has nothing to lose by straightening it.
