Marinoni Special CL find

So, I picked up a Marinoni Special on craigslist Saturday night and I'm looking for some info.

The person I bought it from had bought it from a racer in 1990. Frame is white with blue Marinoni decals. Headtube and rear stays are celeste. Internal rear brake cable routing. Really nice looking IMO (pics later).

Came with a slight hodge podge of parts. The rear and front derailleurs had been replaced with Mavic. The handlebar stem was also replaced with a Mavic one. Crank, seat post, brake levers, DT shifters were all Dura-Ace. Gran Compe Royale brake calipers. No pedals.

So, I'm wondering what RD, FD, and stem would have originally been on this bike. the SN on the BB starts with an 8 so would this be an '88? It has the "M" on the BB.

If you want to know anything else about the bike let me know. I'll make a new pictures thread in the next few days.

Edit: Columbus SLX tubing, 55cm frame

edit2: Campy dropouts and a Campy headset --- braze on derailleurs.

Definitely 1988 manufacture if the S/N starts with 8 and it's SLX. It could have been purchased as a frame and as such there may be no OEM components. Or it could be ordered with your choice of Campagnolo or Shimano groups. Given what is already on it, I probably would oufit it with matching Dura-Ace parts and a Cinelli stem.

Yeah, I'm just having trouble following the Dura-Ace lineup of components. There are so many different versions. Also, the Campy headset is kind of weird and out of place. I assume it would need Dura-Ace FD, RD, and pedals but is there a specific one that would be best? I'm mainly concerned with the pedals.

I'm anxious to post pics since I haven't seen any Marinoni Specials (or Marinonis period) with this white/celeste paintjob and it looks great. I'll probably leave the Mavic parts on the bike and ride it as is. It looks nice. Any info about Mavic derailleurs? I'll try to figure out exactly what models they are when I get home.

It came with Mavic MA40 rims with Dura-Ace hubs. I paid $300 so I think I got a pretty good deal.

It should be Dura-Ace 7400 series given the era. Could be either 7 speed, or possibly 8 speed if it's a 1989 model built in late 1988. The key should be the rear hub. Is it cassette or freewheel? How many cogs? There may be a model number on the hubs.

As for the pedals, I imagine it was originally equipped with clipless and the owner kept them for his new bicycle.

What pedals would you recommend putting on? I won't be riding clipless. The FD seems to be a Mavic 862. The rear derailleur seems to be a Mavic 840. Seems like they're pretty nice components worth leaving on.

Nothing wrong with Mavic. It was good stuff, but the I do like the 7400 series Dura-Ace better, plus I like to like to keep everything matched, which I thought was one of your original points for this thread.

Oh, no, that was one of my original points. I was lost within the Dura-Ace lineup and wanted to know what I was dealing with. Thanks for the info. I'll probably just put new handlebar wrap and pedals on. Leave the rest as is. I'm sure I can find a thread about pedals in 100 different places. Pics soon.

I have one thing left to identify. The stem. Sorry I still don't have pictures (I was assured I could take them tonight) but this is the only thing I haven't figured out.

The stem seems to be Mavic (could be way wrong). It is black and silver with an M on the front of the clamp. It gets wider towards the handlebars and slopes down a little.I can't find anything about it so if you have any ideas, let me know.

Based on the description, it may be a Modolo stem.

You are correct. I'll see if I can find any more information.
